So I have to isolate if my baby has a temperature?

My DS is 1 (and 1 month) he had a high temperature in the night - 37.9. He is irritated and a bit poorly but I'm not too worried.

Do I have to isolate for 2 weeks now? Are the rules the same for a baby? I assume so but not sure.

The rules are if you have symptoms then you get tested. I've just had a look and I can't find anything to say they're not testing children so I would look in to getting him tested.
Then you, and everyone else in your house has to isolate until you get the results.

MabelMoo23 · 26/08/2020 12:55

You need to get him tested and self isolate until results come back. But they are very quick. My test was done at 3pm and back by 9.15am - negative

But yes, as he has a temp, he needs testing. You could have it, with no symptoms and have passed it on and he now has a temp. Highly unlikely and it’s probably a teething temp but only way to know is to test and a temp is one the criteria for absolutely getting a test

VelveteenBunni · 26/08/2020 12:57

He's probably teething surely. If we all had to islotate every sniff of a fever no one would be able to go out.

user24 · 26/08/2020 14:39

Thanks everyone, I suspect urine Infection. The doctor basically hung up when I said temperature. Told me to go to a and e.

How would they even test a baby? Surely they can't get babies to keep their mouth open so that the swab doesn't touch the rest of the mouth

I think with babies you just swab both nostrils instead of the throat swab.

I am in exactly the same position with my babu (same age). Yes unfortunately you do have the get them tested. I did so at a drive thru centre today but I also applied for a home test in case it is inconclusive (this has happened to me recently).

It's a total pain but you've got to, really. My older son is in nursery and I can't in good conscience send him in or mix with other people until I know it's not the dreaded Covid.

A GP friend told me today you only need to swab nostrils btw for a baby. I barely managed that tbh but did my best.

Gillian1980 · 26/08/2020 14:55

Ds is 14 months and was tested recently due to a cough. Used a drive through centre and I had to do the swab myself as staff won’t do it.

Not allowed to get out of car so had to climb into back seat and do it with him in his car seat. He hated it but it wasn’t difficult to do.... did nostril first and then when he opened his mouth to protest I did his throat.

Result took 14 hours to come back.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/08/2020 15:01

12 year olds only swab both noses so younger should too

BlackeyedSusan · 26/08/2020 15:02

Nostrils not noses ffs

And herein lies the reason we will have a shit winter.

I contacted 111 when one of my kids had a temperature and diorrhea last week. I was told it wasn't a problem, he didn't need a test and we didn't need to isolate.

latticechaos · 26/08/2020 16:45

Agree with @Morfin

If we all assume it isn't covid we'll not find the ones that are

Erm, bit worrying?
AtTheWinchester · 26/08/2020 20:28

Did you get him tested OP?

We tested DD a couple of months ago when she was 11 months. It was (obviously) impossible to swab her throat without it touching the rest of her mouth - she sucked on the swab as soon as it went in her mouth.
We didn't get an invalid result though, it came back negative.

I’d use your common sense. My daughter has been badly teething this week, chewing like a maniac, drooling, awake all night, red & swollen gums (they looked so sore 😭), bad nappies, red cheeks & a temp. Today, two teeth appeared! I’m 100% sure the temp was teething related & I’ve continued life as normal.

If my baby had appeared under the weather & I couldn’t relate it to anything else, I’d speak to 111 for advice. I cannot afford to not work this winter. And my first spiked temps with teething & minor illness every flipping week through winter as a baby. I’ll literally never leave the house if my first is the same. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bol87 · 27/08/2020 00:02

*if my second is the same

waitingforachange · 27/08/2020 00:09

Teething doesn't cause a temperature. Illnesses cause temperatures.

Just like the cold doesn't make you ill, viruses, germs and bacteria make you ill. You just get more of them in the winter.

emma911030 · 27/08/2020 00:15

My boy 17 months at the time was tested after having temp and they swabbed his nose and throat. I'm just glad the nurse did it cause I wouldn't have been able to do it! His was negative thankfully.

The whole thing is so tricky. When I was ill I had a temp of 37.8 with no cough rang 111 they said it couldn't be Covid as temp too low and no cough. I did have Covid and passed it to all family members and who knows who else outside the family. When in doubt get tested!

user24 · 27/08/2020 11:11

I called 111 and they made me an appointment at my doctors. Sent off a wee sample and given antibiotics in the meantime because of his history.
His a bit better today and temperature is normal.

If he has regular urine infections shouldnt he be on trimethoprim and be checked for kidney reflux? Mine was, though that might have been how this area does it.

Bol87 · 27/08/2020 12:44

Well, either my daughter had a virus as the exact same time she cut each tooth orrr teething caused a temp. 🙄 But perhaps my understanding of a temp is incorrect. She runs at 36.5 & often went to 37.5- 37.9 and felt very warm. My youngest cut her two teeth on Tuesday & for two days prior was 37.8 and warm. Now back to normal. In my eyes they get temps but I guess not classed as a fever.
