Face mask Scotland schools

Jeez, here we go again. No wonder people are getting fed up with this.

As of Monday pupils in secondary schools are to now wear face coverings on transport, corridors and communal areas. Everyone over 5 will have to wear them on school transport.

Not in classrooms though.

What have we been back two weeks?

I'm not objecting to the wearing of masks overall just the constant changing goal posts by the government at present.

Except usual exemptions apply and nobody will be excluded for refusing to wear one. Pointless.

icedaisy · 25/08/2020 14:42

Yes! Also good where it says in some schools it won't be necessary.....

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 14:43

It’s WHO recommended and I think it can only be a good thing. I’m sure if kids that don’t have valid exemptions refuse to wear them they will have to take action.

As parents we should be encouraging our kids to protect others and themselves and to obey the rules as far as possible.

Really don’t see the problem with this Confused

icedaisy · 25/08/2020 14:52

@MrsOldma I agree and have no problem with the masks.

I have a problem with the confusing and changing messages. Explaining to kids that they will be safe without, not needed, etc etc then two weeks later oops yes you do.

OP posts:
icedaisy · 25/08/2020 14:54

And the fact it's who recommended yet the same article goes on to say the uk government has no plans to introduce similar in England.

OP posts:
MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 14:56

Wearing a mask in crowded, indoor places where SD is difficult is nothing new. It’s just bringing schools inline with shopping centres etc.

I suppose it depends on what kind of conversations you’ve had with your DC and the tone of them. Some kids are naturally more anxious and some naturally more laid back. They’ll probably take a lot of their cues from how we act and the things we say.

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 14:58

@icedaisy I genuinely don’t care what the uk government say. I follow the guidance from my devolved government

icedaisy · 25/08/2020 15:00

I don't think I'm making my point very well as we appear to be saying the same thing. Doesn't matter.

I assume in a few weeks England will u turn as well.

I just wish someone would make a decision and stick to it. Living a stones throw from a border doesn't help in this particular area.

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/08/2020 15:04

But things change, advice changes, evidence changes. Its inevitable. Would you rather that the advice stays the same even in the face of new WHO advice?

icedaisy · 25/08/2020 15:06

But why does it only change for Scotland when I'm a mile from England? Just seems a constant staggered approach which is confusing and frustrating for cross border residents.

OP posts:
MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 15:09

@icedaisy of course there are going to be different rules in Scotland and England. Just like between us and many other countries. Perhaps the difference is felt more acutely in the borders but you have to obey the laws of the country you are currently in

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 15:10

And there’s no such thing as cross border residents Hmm You live in one country. You might work, go to school, shop, or visit others but you live in one

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 25/08/2020 15:12

It’s just Nicola point scoring as usual. The evidence is scant and I’m glad BoJo isn’t following on this one. Nicola is hysterical. Meanwhile people are dying of cancer.

icedaisy · 25/08/2020 15:12

Which I do. Yet this is not law, it is a recommendation and is not necessarily for all schools as I said up thread.

I just would have thought this could have been said two weeks ago. God knows how many masks teens will be using in a day and losing in a day.

OP posts:
Hippywannabe · 25/08/2020 15:17

Rules change as the guidance changes. Guidance changes as we learn more.
Schools were closed for so long that the scientists could only speculate what would happen when they reopened.
Upon reopening, cases have risen. It was obvious to most sane people that it would happen.
Hopefully, the English schools will do this too before we go back next week and include Primary schools too.
It is ridiculous to say Scotland should but England doesn't need to.

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 15:18

@icedaisy the waste makes me shudder too! I haven’t seen anything about some schools not being included I wonder what the criteria is?

He’s they could have made this decision earlier but if they’d tried to reopen schools with this requirement I bet there’d be plenty of people saying it was too soon if masks are required. The government can’t win. They are obviously just looking at the latest infection rates and doing their best imo

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 15:19

*yes not he’s

Hippywannabe · 25/08/2020 15:21

To add one thought, I am fully of the belief that they haven't been made compulsory in the UK as that would mean schools will need to provide them and the Government doesn't want to pay for them.

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 15:22

@Hippywannabe yeah there is probably some truth in that sadly.

icedaisy · 25/08/2020 15:23

@Hippywannabe parents to provide in Scotland as far as I can see. Certainly no mention of this being funded. Could be wrong though.

OP posts:
WinstonWolf · 25/08/2020 15:23

The WHO have only just issued this advice, which is why this wasn't announced two weeks ago presumably.

MrsOldma · 25/08/2020 15:24

@icedaisy but there are parents who won’t/can’t prioritise kids face masks. The schools will probably end up providing for them.

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/08/2020 18:20

But surely secondary age kids have masks already for shops/public transport etc??

premiumshoes · 25/08/2020 18:47

@Ffsnosexallowed

But surely secondary age kids have masks already for shops/public transport etc??

Have you considered those who haven't been out to shops or using public transport? Those who's parents don't care? So many young people are not cared for properly, 'surely' they have masks doesn't come into it.

Our school have already said they will provide where necessary, but also that a face covering can be a scarf/snood/similar.

Ffsnosexallowed · 25/08/2020 19:02

Apologies, should have said " surely the majority of secondary aged kids"
