Jenny Harries: 'Teachers more likely to catch covid during coffee break than in classroom'

Redolent · 24/08/2020 17:26

The quotable one is back at it again. Let's add this to the growing list of her illustrious sayings.

Eg 'We don't want to disrupt people's lives' by banning mass gatherings (March 11th)

  • You'll know if track and trace are calling you, and not scammers, because they will sound 'professional'
  • 1 in 1700 people having covid means that on average you'll have to meet 1700 people before encountering covid...

How about

The issue about lunch boxes is they’re quite personal to the child eating the lunch, and I can almost guarantee that one child won’t want to eat the lunch of the one sitting hopefully two metres distance from them.

I don’t think Jenny Harries has ever been anywhere near a child at lunchtime.

That was the 'best' one by far!

You’ve forgotten the golden gem that we don’t need track & trace because it’s only appropriate for less developed countries

Pixel7777 · 24/08/2020 17:40

I think it is true that most infections in teachers have been from other teachers or outside school

How could you possibly know this?

Coffee break?!!

Keepdistance · 24/08/2020 17:43

'child more likely to get run over by a bus than catch covid'
Havent seen all those details of bus accidents in Scotland recently.
All silly anyway because the numbers can change dramatically very quickly and all the cases are based on what was happening weeks ago.
Is she an actual MD?

Tbh anything she say i think oh well it's obviously the opposite.

I do see the risk of children dying may be low.
But
-long term effects unknown
-with only 6% with antibodies we are looking at at least another 10x the deaths.
-deaths of all ages are limited by staying within nhs capacity.

Todayissunny · 24/08/2020 17:46

Lots of puzzled teachers probably wondering what a coffee break is.

Keepdistance · 24/08/2020 17:46

I disagree and think it's likely the silent spreading kids.
It's not like they are all tested for having it or antibodies after every outbreak.
With the pims-ts or whatever they found kids had had it but they hadnt been thought to at the time when other family members had it.
And research found i think that swabs were not detecting all child cases

WhyAreWeHardOfThinking · 24/08/2020 18:01

I had to turn the BBC off this morning. The Government PR machine is in overload this week... wait until we follow Scotland with the face coverings.

Also, coffee break? Not going to happen. We'll be on duty or trying to find out classroom through the one-way system.

Pixel7777 · 24/08/2020 18:04

Will teachers even be using staffrooms now? meetings etc? I'm guessing so...

mumsneedwine · 24/08/2020 18:10

Well we can't make coffee any more as the kitchen is closed. I'm currently planning on PPA in my car with a big coat.

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 24/08/2020 18:16

Our staff room is closed.

motherrunner · 24/08/2020 18:21

We don’t even have a staffroom 🤷‍♀️

ChaChaCha2012 · 24/08/2020 18:22

The cycle of blame begins again.

Sadly, given the number of people who are reporting neighbours for anything and everything, it will probably succeed.

Nuffaluff · 24/08/2020 18:23

We aren’t allowed to be within two metres of each other at our school. One person allowed in the toilets at a time. Maximum of two allowed in our good sized staffroom at a time. No socialising allowed in the staffroom - go in, grab your coffee and out only.
So what will they do if there’s an outbreak in our school?
We’ll still get the blame won’t we?
This propaganda that children don’t spread it is a lie. It’s a fucking lie and they know it is.

Flowerfairy2020 · 24/08/2020 18:25

Even prior to Covid-19, our staffroom was like the Mary Celeste, I can’t see it being full to brim come September. I’ll be taking coffee in a thermos flask and drinking on the hop. What a ridiculous and out of touch statement to make.

MrsHamlet · 24/08/2020 18:27

We don't have a staffroom. Or break time. And we're supervising the kids in classrooms at lunch time. No coffee here. Luckily that also means we don't need to use the loo during the day.

manicinsomniac · 24/08/2020 18:30

A good proportion of the staff where I work get at least one of the two coffee breaks most days and our staff room is very congested and narrow. So she would actually have a point for us. But, surprise, surprise we can actually assess risk when allowed to and the staff room is closed at break times! It's like she thinks teachers are stupid Grin

SqidgeBum · 24/08/2020 18:35

Staff room? Coffee break? What are these things?

We have been told to spend our planning periods marking outside on picnic benches ...... in winter 🙄 Staff room will be closed. Dont think we even have acess to a fridge to put milk in for a coffee. At this rate we will be eating our cold lunch standing up outside whether on (unpaid) duty or not.

Elizabeth110100 · 24/08/2020 18:41

Our staff room is closed. We have to eat in our designated rooms. No mixing of staff. And we aren't allowed to access the kitchen to make a coffee so....

SlipperSwan · 24/08/2020 19:02

Honestly people have no understanding of schools

Multiple adults need to work in the same room all the time depending how many children have an EHCP or whether children need assistance with disabilities, behaviour or intimate care

No social distancing, no masks, of course staff will pass it around to each other. We're lucky if we ever get a break!

itsgettingweird · 24/08/2020 19:07

From what I know of teachers

A) they'll be lucky to even have time to dream of a coffee break and

B) if they get a chance to pee the 20 seconds hand washing will be longer than the time they actually have to pee in.

I remember the rumours of teachers drinks in drawers and cupboards etc when I was at secondary.

I'd blame no teacher for having a gin stash come September!

Cloudburstagain · 24/08/2020 19:23

What coffee break? Our school has no staff room and we are not allowed kettles!!! Cleaning duties and outside supervision is the grand total of my (unpaid) morning breaks!

Whiskas1Kittens · 24/08/2020 19:30

I work with 4 other staff in my room at all times throughout each day. So yes, even though we have never had breaks, let alone coffee breaks, I agree that staff will probably pass it to each other. (We have lunch 30 minutes separately and always have). But children are not a different species. Children pass illnesses to adults and adults pass illnesses to children. I've noticed that it normally happens at an increased rate in October and March. I think that we are hearing this discussion now because most people realise that the school situation and set up IS concerning. We are so strict and careful about reducing crowds or using masks in shops, museums, tourist attractions, health establishments. This gives us confidence. People hope that schools will be ok and of course, staff will try their damned hardest with bubbles, classes and different procedures, but who knows the reality really?
