it was hard before, not touching the rails, but now, wearing a mask, it is even more disorientating.
i know someone who recently fell and broke his arm in the above scenario

@Permanentlypuzzled

If you do fall down stairs just be careful not to touch any surfaces on your way down. Wouldn’t want Covid19 as well as broken bones. 😉
already had that mentioned to me but thanks so much for your concern @Permanentlypuzzled

Masks, wipes and swab kits do create plastic waste, but we need them right now. However we could compensate for the extra waste they cause by all working extra hard than usual to, say, avoid creating food packaging waste during the pandemic. That's more within most people's power than creating less pandemic waste.

goingtobeokay · 16/08/2020 16:54

Fuck me, there's some awful people on here. I understand your concerns OP. It was a perfectly rationale post and the vipers are just twisting it around. I especially hate walking downstairs as I don't have a good ability to balance. No one wants to touch anything at the moment more than you need to.

Sorry you had such a hard time on here. You didn't deserve it. You could report the thread as not in the spirit of mumsnet

goingtobeokay · 16/08/2020 16:55

Also vipers hope you felt really good with your amazing 'jokes.' Bitches.

Sadly when you have to order your shopping online the food packaging is whatever the supermarket decides to package the food in. And as Tesco started using bags again for deliveries we have 100’s of plastic carrier bags.
LilyMumsnet · 16/08/2020 17:07

Hi all

Can we bear in mind that there's a real person behind every screen? One thing we could all do with, is a bit of patience and understanding. Thanks. Flowers

TSSDNCOP · 16/08/2020 17:13

It isn't "rationale", it's opposite of rational. You have to wear a mask. If you feel that you may fall whilst wearing them the rational thing to do is hold on and then wash your hands/sanitise as soon as possible.

lljkk · 16/08/2020 17:20

I can chew gum and walk walk run downstairs confidently without holding a hand rail, even if I'm wearing a face cover makes no difference. I did get nervous going down Gordale Scar the other day. That was mostly because I had to perch high on top of a skinny rock for at least 10 minutes while other people took ages to decide they lacked the ability to climb up.

I'm afraid of emotional situations but stairs or dirty handrails = no problem.

I was thinking more of the individual food items (choosing blocks of cheese rather than individually wrapped cheese strings, big cartons of apple juice not individual ones, things like that) but yes, there are an awful lot more carrier bags out there now too because of the pandemic. Hopefully a lot of those will be recycled when things get back to normal more.

Maybe numbers of single-use coffee cups from places near offices will have gone down a bit?

All we can do is do what we can to keep the amount of waste we personally have control over down.

randomsabreuse · 16/08/2020 17:35

I'm pretty confident with climbing and stairs but have stacked it before (rushing ...), felt pretty insecure in IKEA - carrying too much shite - and all the masks seem to push off my neck under my chin and start to shift into my eyes. Yet to find a comfortable size and yet most men seem to barely cover to their chins!

SecretWitch · 16/08/2020 17:37

Sorry there are so many cunts on this thread.

I understand the disorientation with the mask thing. I am disabled and usually look down when doing stairs. I seem to be having trouble with foot placement right now.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 16/08/2020 17:39

Thanks, it us difficult isn't it

@HandsOffMyRights

Sorry, I should have taken out the word 'now'. This kind of fearmongering has always been ridiculous.

The overeaction has not passed me by though.

Agreed
itsgettingweird · 16/08/2020 18:17

If you are concerned when travelling then get gloves.

Gloves aren't a replacement for hand washing as germs live on them.

But put them on, go through station and then remove from wrist inside out, place in plastic bag and sanitise.

Personally I'd just hold the rail and wash my hands but some people are very anxious about this and also spend far more time outside and entering Different places than I do.

Forgone90 · 16/08/2020 18:20

Jesus, this is precisely the reason people are too scared to do anything right now... Chances of meeting someone with covid right now are so slim and your too scare to hold a hand rail even though you could wash your hands after.... The thing I'm actually scared about is our kids growing up the be scared of every little thing because their parents are!!!

OpheliasCrayon · 16/08/2020 18:59

@Waxonwaxoff0

It's never occurred to me not to touch the rails while using the stairs. You do realise the odds of having an accident by not using the rails is more likely than catching coronavirus from them?
I broke my back not using the rails

I'd use the rails!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/08/2020 19:07

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine

I do use the rails...but i do find the masks very disorienting

I have to check my feet before i walk!

minnieok · 16/08/2020 19:10

Touch the rail! a fall on the stairs is more likely to hurt you than Covid. Carry hand sanitizer or wash your hands.

Dorual · 16/08/2020 19:31

Am I being dangerous never using handrails then? Never really thought I needed to. I just walk up and down without.

Literally - i never gave stairs a second thought ... Didn't use handrails, slipped and broke my back.... completely unrelated to covid - I would really recommend using them!!!

Well if you don’t need to use a handrail it clearly isn’t an issue is it? The OP obviously does, as she posted about struggling to walk up and down the stairs while wearing a mask.
Dorual · 16/08/2020 19:57

I wasn't being facetious... I'm wondering if most people actually do use handrails now. I can't even remember thinking about it. Maybe I will from now on. Not on carpeted ones in my house though, or maybe people do. Who knows.

Honestly. That's all I fell on. Carpeted stairs at home. I wouldn't have ever given it any thought before I did that
Nicknacky · 16/08/2020 20:02

How have we gotten to the stage that walking up and down the stairs is worthy of discussion?

Just please use common sense. I’m really starting to despair with Mn.
