If You Could Choose Any Education Option for Sept

I'm getting so confused by what parents actually want to happen with schools right now (I'm not a parent, I'm a teacher). I want to know what home opinions my classes are going to be coming in from in Sept - whether they're likely to be nervous or confident, whether they will want to SD or not, etc.

I know parents aren't one hive mind but the 'loudest voice' seems to keep changing its mind. Or I hear different ones, idk.

I'm sure there used to be a board for polls and surveys but, if I wasn't imagining, I can't find it.

So, if you're up for an unscientific straw poll to help me gauge general feeling, can you post A, B, C, D or E in the thread (you can explain if you like, I don't mind!)
A - I want full time schooling as close to the old normal as is allowed
B - I want full time schooling but with safety measures such as social distancing and masks for all who can and are old enough.
C - I want blended learning (half in the classroom and half online)
D - I want to keep my child at home all the time, home school them and not be penalised (ie, I want my place back when I think it's safe)
E - I think schools should remain closed for most children for now.

My youngest got ill 5d after half term. She wasnt better until May.

If it was seeded mainly by iltaly and after that from rest of Europe. Then it grew from just those people travelling to 5m people infected. In just 4 or so weeks.
We probably we have 3k a day now or more so 21k a week. When kids go back and raise the r of 1 to 1.5...

So rather than say A say
Im happy for another 60k to die so my child can go to school. (Including more hcp/teachers/care workers...) Just so my kid doesnt have to wear a mask or SD. Although they actually said peak 2 would be twice as big so.

Alittleodd · 16/08/2020 12:26

Yep, it's right up there with "well my nan smoked 60 a day and she lived to be 80."

Just because some people are fine it doesn't mean everyone ism

@lifeafter50

know of one personally. Anecdote is irrelevant in assessing risk. Look at the analysis of the stats.
You’re very determined to point out that only one child has died in the UK, without seeming to comprehend that children can catch it and have long lasting side effects from it.

I know, as my son is one. He’s now 4 months on from having caught it, and still struggling with exhaustion, rashes and infections related to the original infection.

There aren’t many stats about the long term effects in children though, so by solely relying on “stats” you’re missing a large part of the problem.

Knowing your charming and warm-hearted posting style, you’ll probably just dismiss all that as “anecdata” and “only happened to one child so why should I care” but if some kind of mitigation had been in place in schools in March, like some form of social distancing/bubbles/extra hand washing/masks, then my child wouldn’t have been in pain for the last 4 months.

CallmeAngelina · 16/08/2020 12:33

@Lifeafter50, If you're anything like your posting style in real life, and if you really are a teacher as you claim, I can't help wondering how you get on with your colleagues in school.
Or are they all like you?

noblegiraffe · 16/08/2020 12:35

Nobody died and no-one was seriously ill.

This is straightforward pandemic-denier propaganda.

Really important to know where these people are getting their information from.

Anecdote is irrelevant in assessing risk.

and yet the majority of what you post is anecdotal.

www.change.org/p/don-t-punish-parents-let-us-decide-when-it-s-safe-to-take-our-kids-back-to-school?

Change org petition for those whose circumstances are different allowing parents the right to choose not be forced to send their children with risk of losing school places.
I'm posting this in support of those whose circumstances are different so those of you who are against it, keep your opinions to yourself. Some of you have battered them forward enough without any understanding that some people are in a different boat, everyone should do what is right by their family not because a stranger on the Internet deems so.

I've just watched a really worrying video by an American doctor on another thread about this virus being airborne and school opening. I'll try to find it.

MigGril · 16/08/2020 15:55

We are currently getting somewhere between A&B as some social separation but no mask wearing.

I'd prefer
B in primary schools and C in high schools.

I think what will happen is we all go back and end up with school closures due to cases anyway. Would be better if we went with C so we could have better social distancing in schools from the start.

A

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 16/08/2020 16:01

Watching this made me think that normal will have consequences

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 16/08/2020 16:02

@Gladiffer - just seen and posted it.

Boredbumhead · 16/08/2020 16:04

C blended half half

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 16/08/2020 16:05

@lifeafter50 - I will be wearing a mask in the classroom. What are you going about it?

Gladiffer · 16/08/2020 16:07

Thanks @StaffAssociationRepresentative

WhyNotMe40 · 16/08/2020 16:10

I'm not sure I will be allowed to wear a mask in the classroom....

❤️

Danglingmod · 16/08/2020 16:14

No, we're not, either. It will be a disciplinary if we try to wear one, apparently, because the govt have said they're "not necessary." I don't know of a single school allowing them.

MrsHamlet · 16/08/2020 16:16

Nor are we allowed.

ineedaholidaynow · 16/08/2020 16:21

DS’s school are saying masks can be worn by teachers and students if they want to

PaundryLouder · 16/08/2020 16:21

A (primaries) and B (secondaries), but with parents able to keep their kids off if they want without losing their places.

Ifartglitterybaubles · 16/08/2020 16:23

D for us. I'd be happy with C if daily infection rates weren't above 1000 and social distancing in schools was still 2m.

pontypridd · 16/08/2020 16:32

What are all you parents here going to do come September?

Even Kier Starmer is putting pressure on the government to get all kids back full time - or else.

We’re not going to get any other option than A are we?

Are you all just going to obey? I’m really worried after listening to that US doctor. Have been trying to bury my worry but now realise how foolish that is.

Be the happiest I've been in over five months. I've worked full time the whole way though while my young teenager has been completely alone for much of it. He went back to school for six weeks out of five months but only for supervision and companionship, no teaching.
pontypridd · 16/08/2020 16:47

And if he gets Covid and passes it onto you / one of you dies or has long term health issues as a result? It might not happen- or it might.

Will you then be the happiest you’ve ever been?
