What are you doing with the dc during the holidays?

Has Covid made any difference to what you would usually do with them?

I'm finding that there are no holiday clubs running.

We've been going to lots of parks but that gets old quickly.

Have been mainly avoiding indoor activities but beginning to think feck it and just get on as usual.

We'd usually go swimming quite a bit but our local pools aren't allowing children.

ohthegoats · 12/08/2020 10:14

Park every morning until 12, because I can sit under a tree and read my book, she just plays with other kids.
Home and no screens until 5pm so 'make yourself busy' time, or we'll play games, draw, paint, whatever.
She can do what she likes on any screen from 5 - 7, bedtime is half 8.

We've had one playdate a week when the weather is ok for being in the garden, we've been to my parents in the garden one afternoon a week too.

That's it. I just dont want to risk having to isolate completely because we're going to Cornwall at the weekend. It's been low key and we haven't minded it too much.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/08/2020 14:41

I work 4 days a week. Holiday club is running here so I'm using that and family while I work. I'm not avoiding anything indoors. This weekend we are going to play indoor crazy golf and out for lunch. Next weekend we are going to a trampoline park and the following weekend we are going to London for a night away.

ImFree2doasiwant · 12/08/2020 14:45

I've found it hard work. Dc are 5 and 3, I normally work 3 days Adweek, they're normally at school/pre school.

We've been at home since March. It's wearing thin tbh. I'm bored.

We're going swimming once a week. Beach occasionally but it's with a too hot or too busy or both.

Not been to any indoor activities though.

Frazzled2207 · 12/08/2020 14:48

Not really done much at all indoors.

Park a LOT
Country walks and cycle rides
Occasional play dates (only with “best friends” to reduce the risk)
A few days of holiday club- realise we’re lucky
Sleepovers with grandparents
One day trip to zoo
Away next week (Sc cottage in UK)
Play at home the rest of the time, probably a bit more screen time than they would have usually.
Been tough going tbh.

Layladylay234 · 12/08/2020 14:50

We've been taking full advantage of being out of lockdown and been to zoos, swimming, farms and the cinema (which was a bit nerve wracking and not as relaxing as usual!). We took a friend to the farm park last week and our local museum opens next week so we'll be booking to go there. We also went on holiday to Yorkshire. Also trying to plan a park meetup for him and 5 friends.

I figure my son (and all the other kids in the UK) had suffered and been screwed over enough with Lockdown and am trying to make summer as enjoyable as possible for him.

Theneverendingcleaningcycle · 12/08/2020 14:50

Park. Think I've hit every one within a 20 mile radius.
Playdates in the garden (in wales so kids don't have to socially distance).
I'm fed up of the same thing everyday. But that's life atm.

Layladylay234 · 12/08/2020 14:52

Btw OP, with swimming, we found either waterparks (The Wave in Coventry) snowdomes (specifically Tamworth) and outdoor lidos are a way (there's one in Derbyshire) to get around swimming pools not being open.

thaegumathteth · 12/08/2020 17:28

Zoo
Ringo rides
Beach
Quad biking
Go karting
Kite
Bikes
Water play in garden eg slip and slide

wendz86 · 12/08/2020 17:31

LadyCatStark · 12/08/2020 17:56

Bikes, bikes, bikes so nothing new there!
Kayaking
Paddleboarding
Back to snowboarding at chill factor on Monday
Playing out
Eating out to help out
Going to the (very local and very quiet) beach
Meeting up with one set of friends at a time.

herecomesthsun · 12/08/2020 18:21

we will be vibing the garden at home for a music festival at the end of August (have bought on line virtual pass)
I will order festival Tshirts when we get home
we are planning a film watch party

we are just out of shileding so that's prob exciting enough for us!

SomewhereEast · 12/08/2020 18:40

We've been doing trips to playgrounds, the beach (we live near the coast) and outdoorsy attractions, plus a few playdates. There aren't masses of indoor attractions near us and the weather's pretty good, so I haven't really bothered with those (and probably won't bother now you have to wear masks). Apart from the fact we haven't gone abroad its actually been almost 'normal'.

Lindy2 · 12/08/2020 18:45

A lot of National Trust gardens, an outdoor museum and quite a bit of paddling in a local stream. We've got an inflatable mini swimming pool in the garden and some days they just spend most of their time in that.

It's different but mostly it's ok. I do miss going to the fun swimming pool and cinema but we can manage without them. I know some are reopening soon but those activities are higher risk than I'm comfortable with right now.

I can't wait for our little break by the sea for some time on the beach.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/08/2020 19:09

Have two DC (5 & 2) & still working pt wfh so have been:
Play parks... so many play parks. Have been actively trying new ones in different towns & villages.
Walks
Visited the zoo
Beach trips
Visited a local outdoor family attraction
DD has one overnight stay at PIL a week
A local outdoor baby/toddler/child activity group has started up so doing that one morning a week
Play dates in parks etc or gardens
Shopping (first morning of holidays was spent in Asda lol!)
Other than stuff at home/garden

BogRollBOGOF · 12/08/2020 19:38

Minecraft.
Youtube.

Pokemon Go for a regular walk.
Until last week, jumping the fence of the nearest decent playground. It has finally opened.

Zoo
Living museum
Walked a couple of miles to nearest children's farm and back.

Minecraft, minecraft, minecraft.

DS2 has managed to have a handful of sports club bookings to break it up and socialise him. This is normal summer survival. It's DS1's idea of hell, vand he likes a 1:1 day.

DS2 has been dabbling with learning roller skates. Tried to get dyspraxic DS1 riding a bike again for the 3rd year in a row, but he carries on as though he's being murdered.
We miss swimming and water playparks/ paddling pool.

The garden is small and relentlessly sun scorched so they don't go out much in hot weather (I don't blame them).
I'm not doing any masky indoors stuff. It's bad enough having panic attacks over buying food!

They were good at random playing for a couple of weeks while the main TV wasn't working.

helloblossom · 12/08/2020 19:41

Not a lot. We're working full time and everywhere is packed or booked up at the weekends. I've just spent an hour trying to book something (anything) active and everything is fully booked for august. Primary aged DD is happy with a play park but secondary aged DD is too old for swings and slides. Can't afford summer camps this year and no grandparents to help so they're just stuck at home all week and then it's the same old bike rides at the weekends. Open to suggestions around Cambridgeshire, Essex and Herts.

DipSwimSwoosh · 12/08/2020 19:45

We put a big framed pool in the garden.

didireallysaythat · 12/08/2020 19:55

YouTube

We're WFH. No holiday clubs. Not sure the after-school club has survived covid as their insurance hasn't paid out. So I suspect there's going to be more YouTube in our futures.

IncidentsandAccidents · 12/08/2020 20:06

LOTS of picnics and playground visits!
A week in a cottage by the sea
Another seaside holiday planned (visiting family)
Day trip to a wildlife park
Visits to local cafes
A couple of garden/playground playdates
Dc1 is going for a sleepover at a friend's house next week

Dc have missed indoor swimming but apart from that it hasn't felt too different to normal summer holidays. We don't tend to socialise in big groups, we like to be outside as much as possible and we holiday in the UK.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 12/08/2020 20:54

Let's just say if l never go on another picnic again, it will be too soon!!

Uhoh2020 · 12/08/2020 21:26

Safari Park, skate park, trampoline Park, took advantage of the 50% eat out twice at the local Toby carvery (not my choice for a quality meal but they love it) pool in the garden, plans to go to the beach at the weekend but also glad of the indoor Netflix and munch days too.

InDubiousBattle · 12/08/2020 21:43

I'm struggling to be honest. We're in an enhanced lockdown area (is that what we're calling it?)so the vast majority of things we would usually do are shut/not allowed. No pool, play parks, play dates, family visits, library or teddy bears picnic event type things. We're on garden, the park (but no swings etc)and more sodding walks. We have a a couple of nice meals out for half price at least.

Uhoh2020 · 12/08/2020 22:12

@InDubiousBattle where are you? I'm in Greater Manchester still been able to do all those things

unrealengine · 12/08/2020 22:18

We're visiting as many different playgrounds as we can, to make up for lost time, which I'm finding quite a fun challenge! There are lots of little ones that we tend to overlook as they're not part of a big park, and it's nice for the dc to have variety in equipment.

We had a week away in Cornwall, and did the beach and some tourist attractions there. We've done a couple of museums and galleries, and we'll be doing more as they reopen. It's admittedly not as fun as it used to be, with masks, one way systems and all the interactive exhibits being closed.

We've gone to the zoo lots of times as we got a membership, and a city farm. We've also booked for swimming, crazy golf and trampolining in the next few weeks. Planning to do some botanical gardens and a bird sanctuary as well. Everything needs booking quite far in advance, but that just means you have things planned out for the next few weeks.

Normally we'd be doing more structured activities/classes, but very few are open yet (many of them due to reopen in a few weeks).

Frazzled2207 · 12/08/2020 22:39

@Uhoh2020
Family visits are out in GM as far as I’m aware (I’m there too)
