... with added shouting at the back from people who want neither and are happy to shit on the floor.

I prefer washable ones because you can have ones that look nicer and not so clinical. I like hanging them in the sunshine to disinfect them. I bought a couple of washable ones for a friend because he was worried about the cost of disposable ones, but he knew he had to have one to go to the shops. He didn't realise it only has to be a face covering. With the washable ones you don't have to keep remembering to stock up. You have to remember to wash them but I do washing every day anyway and they hardly take up a lot of space. But people can wear whatever suits them imo.

LordOftheRingz · 10/08/2020 23:24

People are losing their jobs, people will be hungry this winter, people will be evicted from their homes. The last thing anyone needs is the green guilt brigade jumping down peoples throats about disposable masks.

We are entering a period where people will be fighting to feed themselves, I don't think saving the planet will be top of the list.

WithIcePlease · 10/08/2020 23:25

Single use masks can be put in the washer too so don't presume they are all going to landfill after a single use

Shannith · 10/08/2020 23:31

No. No it really isn't. I can't even begin to list to the 7bn reasons why it's a completely specious comparison.

But I can see why you might have thought you'd get some traction on Mumsnet.

Note to self: must try harder.

I can and have made several fabric masks in different designs. I can't wear them. I have really tried but I feel suffocated, they're too hot, the fabric pulls in against my nose and mouth when I breathe, I feel like I'm going to pass out. I can and do wear disposables because they're lighter and more breathable.

I figure that it's better that I wear a mask than not, so this is the way it has to be.

Me too. I can't wear the masks at all. I do in shops (food only) as I just cant stand shopping anymore, and I won't be participating in rebuilding the economy outside paying bills and buying food/essentials. I legally do not have to wear a mask, but fear aggressive mask enforcers so I do.

I also have lots of washable face masks. At first they were okay then I found I was getting very breathless with them on (I have asthma). I have switched to disposable surgical type masks and feel so much better.

I wear them properly (nose not peeking out), don't touch the front of them, once on it stays on until in the car to go home, taken off carefully by the straps only and carefully put in my bin.

I work from home and go to shops once or twice a week. So I think my environmental impact will be low.

trucksandtrailers · 11/08/2020 00:47

I used disposable nappies for convenience, but I'm using cloth masks because it seemed too expensive to use a new disposable one for every trip out/journey. I'm considering trying a disposable mask though, because everyone says they're much easier to breathe through. And now people are saying that they don't just use them once, and prices have come down a lot, so it doesn't seem so pricey. Legally I'm also exempt, but I find it easier to tolerate a mask than to tolerate potential confrontation and questioning. I'm not washing my cloth masks after each use, so it's not as high maintenance as reusable nappies.

Recommend this pattern - it stands out from your face a bit to give breathing room, fits well, and my glasses don't steam up when wearing it!

I was a cloth nappy user and now I’m a washable mask user. Coronavirus has hugely increased the amount of plastic in my life, which I was really trying to prevent before - shopping delivered in bags, online clothes deliveries, loads of plastic for online food deliveries now being delivered in bags - it’s one area I can prevent even more plastic being used.

Eh? Never heard of this ‘schism’!

We wear our disposables over and over again anyway. My understanding is that any old face covering will do whatever job people seem to think that masks are doing!

HeresMe · 11/08/2020 07:18

Oh so now it's not good enough we are wearing masks, we now have to wear the kind that suits the OP nothings ever good enough for some. And saying people who don't or can't shitting on floor goady as hell.

Second goady thread in 3 days from this OP

No need to presume, on my way home from the Tube last night I counted 15 discarded disposable masks. It's a ten minutes walk.

Don't forget - you also have to really, really enjoy wearing them too or they won't work
middleager · 11/08/2020 08:24

I used disposable nappies. I had two babies at once and lived in a tiny flat with no outdoor space or central heating, so judge as you wish.

I use disposable face masks as the cloth masks steam up my glasses.
But you won't know that I then steam the mask and hang it on the line to wear again.

And the hypocrisy of this thread OP. Presumably you've not been on a plane, driven anywhere or done anything else to contribute to the demise of the environment?

This is the laziest argument ever, there is always someone who trots it out, thinking they are so clever.

I don't think I'm clever, just sick of the sanctimonious tone of the mask police.

The design of those is incredibly neat, but there is still a lot of bulk over the nose, by the time a wire casing has been added. I have a big, bony nose so can't manage without the wire.

samholden · 23/08/2020 06:37

@PickAChew @BrutusMcDogface Don't know whether you have found one yet but after a long search for a mask I could wear with my glasses (plus one that didn't touch my mouth as I do get anxious when I can't breathe) I bought this one from Etsy - then went back and bought another 2 as it worked so well.

I think most people that wear disposables arent throwing them away, I'd using the same one over and over, and I doubt many people are washing masks.

This.

I used reusable nappies for my children, knitted my own yoghurt and rarely use the car. But I'm generally using a paper mask because it's the best fit with my glasses. I'll use it until it falls apart. Then I'll put it in the bin.
