Is it me or are people not bothering with face masks in shops anymore?

I'll preface this by saying I live in Scotland, so we've been doing the face masks in shops thing for a while longer than in the rest of the UK, so people have had more time to get used to/get bored of the idea.

I go to shops most days. I can't get everything I need from one store and I like to go out walking whenever I can (I WFH), so I tend to visit the PO with eBay things to post and/or pick up some groceries on the way home. I'm obviously limited in what I can carry but it suits me getting a bit in every day.

About a week ago I began to notice a distinct absence of face masks in shops. First it was the woman in front of me at the PO. I figured she was probably exempt so I didn't think anything of it. You can't really go challenging anyone as they might be and then it would be embarrassing if they were exempt and it's not really my place to do so. I'm not the mask police. On the way out I noticed another guy at the till (it's a grocery store) not wearing a mask.

Next I went to ASDA. There were a whole gaggle of people one aisle looking at toothpaste and they weren't wearing masks. At this point it occurred to me that none of the people wandering around the store were under 11 and there seemed to be an awful lot of people with asthma or anxiety conditions in my community. More so than I had realised. As I wandered around I began to become aware that it was just me and the occasional old person bothering to mask up. It doesn't help that the staff don't have to. At this point I began to seriously wonder if there had been a government announcement I had missed.

The following day I went back to the PO and apart from some old guy buying milk no-one else in the store was wearing mask. A large number of blokes were in buying beer from the off licence. No masks there either.

Is it me? Am I going mad? There seems to be this general belief that Coronavirus is a myth, that everyone is fussing about nothing because hardly anybody dies of it and the government rules are ridiculous and contradictory so why bother. And no-one is enforcing it. And yet everywhere I go people are flogging masks. Shops aren't bothering controlling the number of people going in and out, the one-way systems have gone, there's no attempt at social distancing anywhere. If I didn't know better I would think the past few months had been a dream.

Either we all do it or we don't bother. Otherwise all these rules and regulations which must be costing massive amounts of money are just a complete waste of time. When are Nicola and Boris going to wake up to the fact that people, having gotten bored of Coronavirus, have apparently moved on?

Almost everyone is wearing them here. I’ve literally seen just one or two not. Lots wearing them not quite correctly though.

Toilenstripes · 08/08/2020 16:29

I’m in Oxfordshire and everyone is wearing them in the shops.

june2007 · 08/08/2020 16:35

Yep everyone wearing them round here.

StCharlotte · 08/08/2020 16:36

Just back from Tesco (England). Everyone wearing them, including staff, except for one bloke who had his in his breat pocket. Go figure...

There was also a lad - late teens I'd say so old enough to know better - playing with it and pulling it up and down. Twat.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/08/2020 16:38

Nearly everyone is wearing them where I live, in the SE of England.

catscatscatseverywhere · 08/08/2020 16:41

I see almost everyone wearing mask. Yesterday I saw 4 police officers in the shopping mall, probably looking for people to fine for not wearing one.

vanillandhoney · 08/08/2020 16:42

Pretty much everyone wears them there.

The only people who don't are young children or the very elderly, who I presume must be exempt for health reasons.

JamieLeeCurtains · 08/08/2020 16:43

Given up shopping in Asda - no-one gives a fuck.

Morrison's is still very good, both staff and customers mostly masked or visored, all pretty orderly re entering and exiting, trolley cleaning, social distancing at tills.

amieejust · 08/08/2020 16:45

In my local Asdas about half don't wear masks and it isn't policed by staff or security.

Most other places people are wearing masks.

I'm in the SW.

Lucienandjean · 08/08/2020 16:46

Well, I'm in Scotland too and everyone round here is wearing them, in shops at least.

Xiaoxiong · 08/08/2020 16:49

My MIL said she won't go to her local ASDA as no one is wearing masks, Lidl much better. Round us everyone is masked up in all the shops (SE).

I live in York and just had to go to town about an hour ago. I only went into one shop, and everyone had a mask on in there, but town itself was PACKED - looked just like a normal non-covid Saturday - and I saw maybe 4 or 5 people wearing masks outdoors. Bearing in mind everyone was close together, easily less than 1m between groups, and there was a huge gathering of people around a street performer.

I'm not hysterical about risks by any means, but the amount of people so close together without masks really shocked me.

Especially since a lot of northern towns are going back into lockdown... York is doing really well right now, but it looks like that might change soon.

worldweary45 · 08/08/2020 16:51

Local corner shop -no one is wearing them

Local supermarket most people are wearing them

although groups of teens wonder round pulling their masks down every time they are out of sight of the shop staff

2 local shopping centres, one open at all the entrances/exits where people aren't wearing them in the general areas but are in the shops, and another where all doors are manned and they aren't allowing people in without them -they are also publicly asking people to disclose why they are exempt and then telling them that they should be wearing one anyway

Triangularbubble · 08/08/2020 17:07

Almost everyone wearing one here in shops. Not necessarily properly- lots of noses out, masks upside down etc - but they are being worn. Slightly more ambiguous areas like beach public toilets seemed to have far fewer.

dementedpixie · 08/08/2020 17:08

I'm in Scotland and the vast majority of people are wearing them

TheGreatWave · 08/08/2020 17:21

Went to the shops this morning, pretty much everyone was wearing one.

QueenofmyPrinces · 08/08/2020 17:22

Most people in supermarkets are wearing them but in terms of going into smaller stores and newsagents etc, masks are quite rare to see.

Jayfee · 08/08/2020 17:24

I just made a post asking for ideas to stop people ignoring the mask wearing law..I think there needs to be a joint action before we get more infections

Dadnotamum72 · 08/08/2020 17:26

ASDA seems to be a common factor in any post like this regarding masks or anything else.
99% in tesco near me for customers 50% for non chevkout staff.

PurpleDaisies · 08/08/2020 17:26

Most people aren’t ignoring the mask wearing law.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 08/08/2020 17:28

I work in a supermarket. I've seen roughly 50% wearing them properly. Of the other 50% about 1/3 aren't wearing them and the other 2/3 are wearing them incorrectly - noses out or hanging from one ear.

All staff are wearing them.

HeIenaDove · 08/08/2020 17:40

Local Tesco yesterday North Essex................everyone wearing them

EggysMom · 08/08/2020 17:43

Must be an Asda thing - less than 50% of customers wearing a mask round here. Mind you, they're as bad in our corner shop and local takeaways.

SociallyDistantPenguin · 08/08/2020 17:43

Central Scotland here ... Just about everyone is wearing some sort of face covering in shops here, even the youngsters who don't have to.

Even in Asda. Grin

Pipandmum · 08/08/2020 17:48

Everyone is wearing masks near me. In many shops there is someone at the door explaining if they have a one way system, asking you to sanitize your hands etc. I had to go to an estate agent and they are only seeing people by appointment. I live in a holiday destination and it is teeming - those who normally go to Spain etc seem to have headed here.
I am surprised at the amount of people wearing masks outside- I can't wait to take mine off. I watched a family of six play a round of crazy golf all wearing masks throughout.
