Is it me or are people not bothering with face masks in shops anymore?

I'll preface this by saying I live in Scotland, so we've been doing the face masks in shops thing for a while longer than in the rest of the UK, so people have had more time to get used to/get bored of the idea.

I go to shops most days. I can't get everything I need from one store and I like to go out walking whenever I can (I WFH), so I tend to visit the PO with eBay things to post and/or pick up some groceries on the way home. I'm obviously limited in what I can carry but it suits me getting a bit in every day.

About a week ago I began to notice a distinct absence of face masks in shops. First it was the woman in front of me at the PO. I figured she was probably exempt so I didn't think anything of it. You can't really go challenging anyone as they might be and then it would be embarrassing if they were exempt and it's not really my place to do so. I'm not the mask police. On the way out I noticed another guy at the till (it's a grocery store) not wearing a mask.

Next I went to ASDA. There were a whole gaggle of people one aisle looking at toothpaste and they weren't wearing masks. At this point it occurred to me that none of the people wandering around the store were under 11 and there seemed to be an awful lot of people with asthma or anxiety conditions in my community. More so than I had realised. As I wandered around I began to become aware that it was just me and the occasional old person bothering to mask up. It doesn't help that the staff don't have to. At this point I began to seriously wonder if there had been a government announcement I had missed.

The following day I went back to the PO and apart from some old guy buying milk no-one else in the store was wearing mask. A large number of blokes were in buying beer from the off licence. No masks there either.

Is it me? Am I going mad? There seems to be this general belief that Coronavirus is a myth, that everyone is fussing about nothing because hardly anybody dies of it and the government rules are ridiculous and contradictory so why bother. And no-one is enforcing it. And yet everywhere I go people are flogging masks. Shops aren't bothering controlling the number of people going in and out, the one-way systems have gone, there's no attempt at social distancing anywhere. If I didn't know better I would think the past few months had been a dream.

Either we all do it or we don't bother. Otherwise all these rules and regulations which must be costing massive amounts of money are just a complete waste of time. When are Nicola and Boris going to wake up to the fact that people, having gotten bored of Coronavirus, have apparently moved on?

I was in a small asda today - lots of mask wearing including small kids (have to wear them from age 5 in Scotland)

DamitJanet · 08/08/2020 17:55

Overwhelming majority of people wearing them here (east anglia). Seeing more and more wearing them outside too.

audweb · 08/08/2020 17:58

I live tayside, pretty much everyone I see is wearing masks. Am up north on holiday, it’s the same. Even in Asda as well.

ChristmasinJune · 08/08/2020 17:58

North west England here and pretty much everybody is wearing them now inside shops. Outside it's maybe 40% but I haven't been to any crowded shopping areas.

ShanghaiDiva · 08/08/2020 18:00

Am in south west and practically everyone wearing a mask.

Kaykay066 · 08/08/2020 18:01

Face coverings for anyone over 5 in Scotland.

I was in Tesco in Dundee about 7.30 pm last night and there were about five groups of 18-25 year olds buying booze , plus several young couples all with no masks. The girls were dressed up for a night out and wearing heavy make up , which I guess they did not want to ruin with a mask
No security at the door to advise them - I did send an email to Tesco to complain about their complete lack of monitoring

All older people and children were however masked .
One man bizarrely was wandering about in a full faced motorbike helmet with visor , I saw him later in the car park - getting into a car rather than a motorbike !!
I guess I went at the wrong time , as otherwise it has been fine

Very good compliance wherever I've been into shops (rural Scotland). Maybe that explains the low levels of Covid-19 here?

DipSwimSwoosh · 08/08/2020 23:24

I know this wasn't the question OP. But I am struck by something in your post. You seem to disapprove of people not wearing masks, saying you'd not challenge them, but implying you'd like to.
Yet at the beginning of all this we were told to go out only for essential trips, and limit the places and frequency.
So the government seems to want everyone out again, but surely popping to various shops every day is as risky as not wearing a mask on your one trip to the shops each week, in terms of spreading the virus?

Whynotdance · 08/08/2020 23:35

I went to local co op this morning. Staff not wearing masks but customers were.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/08/2020 00:13

They look ridiculous when they are under the nose, I'd love to say to the gents tuck your willy in your pants.

FrothyB · 09/08/2020 00:30

Other than staff I think I saw one person not wearing them in Tesco today. At ASDA in Peterborough at the weekend there were significantly more people not wearing masks. It really doesn't bother me what other people choose to do, I'm just adding my observations.

For what it's worth, I was in Poland and Germany two weeks ago, and France last week. Germany it seemed to be around 70-30 wearing masks, Poland 50/50, with alot of people wearing them apon entry to a place and then taking them off when they gauged the general numbers in the room. France seemed alot more compliant, with no one in the motorway services I stopped at not wearing one.

And working from home is MUCH safer than going into the office every day, sitting on public transport, visiting sandwich shops. But we're now being told that we must do all these things to save the economy. We're navigating a confusing mish-mash of contradictory advice.

Yes, I got that wrong didn't I. I'll hold my hand up. I didn't pay much attention as my daughter is 18. And I merely presumed it was 11 (as in England) because NO kids around here are wearing masks in shops at all. I had noticed some very young kids with parents wearing them. I assumed they were showing solidarity but clearly it's because they're following the rules. Many aren't. Lots of gangs of school age children buying crisps and pop and and basically carrying on as normal. No masks. I presumed that was because they were too young. But in fact it's because they don't care. And staff in shops won't say anything as they'll just get a mouthful of abuse.
