Masks which don't make you feel you are boiling alive?

I've made my own cotton ones but they are so hot and sweaty. I'm loathe to use the disposable ones for environmental reasons (although can someone tell me if we wear them, take them off at home and quarantine them for 48 hours is there any reasons we can't wear them again?)

Anyone found the gold standard of bearable masks yet?

Just to be clear I will always wear them, despite the boiling/sweaty face problem but just want to find a better alternative!

Thanks

I spent ages making beautiful fabric ones but found the. Unbearable to wear - too hot and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. After 20 minutes I was on the verge of a panic attack (I struggle with claustrophobia).

Buff or other neck things pulled up were worse. Felt like I was being strangled (this is my issue, I know).

However, I’ve found the disposable ones absolutely fine. I did a 3 hour shift at work wearing one last week and forgot it was there until I tried to make phone calls. I’d much rather not be creating landfill, but needs must.

Standard surgical from the chemist (think supermarkets sell too). Even better if they're tie-on rather than ear loops.

Whichever mask you're wearing, make sure it's properly fitting as that makes a big difference, comfort-wise.

I think they all make you feel boiling hot sadly.

I made one from an old T-shirt and I found I was fine wearing it. Fit nicely and you can make them from old tops etc. Easy to make and I can’t sew at all!

I’ve got a couple of those really cheap black ones you see everyone wearing and they make me sweat, the disposable ones are to big for me and seem counter productive.

The normal "papery" disposable surgical ones. Initially here when we couldn't get surgical ones we had homemade ones but it was a blessed relief when the surgical ones became available.

I've made my own using instructions online for us and they are ok. The kids wear them and no complaints although we only have them on for an hour or two at most. The one I did is the 2 circles then cut in to quarters and stitched. I did wear it for 3.5 hours in the hospital last week and was bearable even though 90 degrees that day.

Face visors are acceptable in Scotland. Much, much more bearable.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 03/08/2020 09:33

I use the disposable ones then hang them up in the sun and reuse them.

Chanel05 · 03/08/2020 09:42

I wear the face visors. £1.99 in Home Bargains and much more bearable.

YouStupidBoy · 03/08/2020 09:49

ASOS have packs of three jersey masks which are pretty bearable.

SengaStrawberry · 03/08/2020 09:54

I have gap ones. They are ok but I have broken out in spots all around my mouth and chin

Flaxmeadow · 03/08/2020 09:57

The pale blue on the outside paper 'surgical' type ones are the best I've found. They seem to be coming down in price now as well

40somethingJBJ · 03/08/2020 10:01

I’ve got a couple from The Big Bloomers Company which look almost like a sock, but they’re really comfortable to wear.

ihearttc · 03/08/2020 10:02

I got 3 for £5 in B&M on Friday and they are a really light shiny material. I’ve really struggled with every other one that I’ve got but I wore one round the shops yesterday with no problem.

ThePlantsitter · 03/08/2020 11:00

A friend gave me one from baukjen which was much more comfortable than the beautiful ones I made myself Sad

onemouseplace · 03/08/2020 16:06

I was so much more comfortable in one of the disposable paper masks when I spent 2.5 at the hairdresser, that I've bought some for when I need to wear a mask for longer than an hour or so.

I'm easing my conscience over the environmental side by using my cloth ones for quick trips to the supermarket/ bank etc.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 03/08/2020 16:16

I found it interesting that whenever I had seen photos of people in Asian countries wearing facemasks they always had the disposable ones when they could have such varied design. After buying us all nice ones from etsy I realize they were on the right track all along fabric ones are just so uncomfortable. I'm reusing disposable ones, I don't need to use them often and keep a few on rotation.

BatShite · 03/08/2020 16:17

I found the surgical ones to be best breathing/temp wise. Though we are told not to buy those. If I have to wear one, it seems the only one I can tolerate for short periods..so..thats what I have

Though of course, many seem to think that masks do not make people hot or breathless at all and its just people trying to get out of wearing one, it makes no difference at all Hmm

StCharlotte · 03/08/2020 20:51

I bought a cotton one from Amazon which is a bit hot but I then bought some from Seasalt and they actually feel really nice when you put them on although I've only worn them for shopping so not extended wear. They're the fitted ones but they also do the pleated ones.

cologne4711 · 03/08/2020 21:16

I've got some from Seasalt too (both shapes, shaped and pleated) and they are ok, though I've not worn one eg for the hairdressers. I did wear one for a sports massage though.

frustrationcentral · 03/08/2020 21:22

Surgical are much more comfy

okiedokieme · 03/08/2020 21:24

I have a thin tube scarf bought for skiing. It's actually too thin to be of much use to be honest but it technically meets the face covering criteria and doesn't steam my glasses. Masks are too hot and steam me up

Aethelthryth · 03/08/2020 21:24

Make some silk ones. Much lighter -feeling than cotton

Uhoh2020 · 03/08/2020 21:39

I came onto this thread thinking id find a miracle mask only to find the blue surgical type ones seem to be the favourite. I'm really struggling with these ones so god knows how the others make you feel.
I only put the mask on as I walk through the door and take it off the second i walk out, I'm quick to get my shopping done and quite flustered by the time I'm at the checkout.
I haven't seen anyone in my local supermarket wearing a visor instead though is that allowed instead?

ivykaty44 · 03/08/2020 21:42

I wear a bandana tied behind my head at ear level & popped over my nose, it’s covering a lot but lose

I look like a dick Turpin wannabe
