an overweight teacher back into work

So everybody who sadly has been working 70 plus hours a week trying to deliver astraightjacket curriculum, and in the process has neglected themselves and gained weight is on the Covid scrap heap? Absolute nonsense.

What do you suggest, a Slimming World leader at every school gate and a turnstile?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 03/08/2020 09:50

Sorry im being dense

The weight thing

I only add on years if my bmi is over 30...yeah?

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 03/08/2020 09:51

Ignore me

It is going to have to be a personal decision. If you are very over weight or older with health conditions we cannot as a nation pay for you to stay at home so the usual hard choices of times of war and times of pandemic come into play and the nation decides where the greater good lies eg fit young children and teenagers getting an education or more covid 19 deaths among those at risk? hard choices. I would rather individuals at health risk took their own choices at their own cost however than the state making blanket rules and enforcing yet more covid 19 laws.

The poster/s earlier on who suggested bringing in the state pension at 55. The state pension is tiny, who would be able to live on it? Anyone relying on the state pension to fund their old age, whatever age it is received, is deluded.
I feel very sorry for the people who say they would look forward to another lockdown so they didn't have to socialise. I just find it amazing that people would willingly succumb to what is essentially house arrest indefinitely. What an empty and sad life they must lead.
If this was introduced I would take no notice. There is no way the government is going to have that much say over my life. It is depressing enough at the moment with the lack of socialisation and culture.
Having said that, I think it's unlikely, so I will not bother getting my knickers in too much of a twist over it.

@Meruem

I’m exactly 50 and am not fitter than anyone I know! I am peri menopausal, permanently exhausted and full of aches and pains. Just to counter all these “I’m 60 and fitter than a 30 yr old” posters Grin I’d take the assessment. But then I was fine during lockdown so it wouldn’t phase me spending more time at home.

I'm 57, an HCP, permanently exhausted, achey all the time, and under ever more work pressure.

Believe me, if I could sit at home for a few weeks with full pay, I'd snap at it!

😂

Pacif1cDogwood · 03/08/2020 15:50

I think the socialising thing is a bit of a red herring to be honest - My life is v fool and interesting, thank you v much, and I love being at home, ideally on my own Grin

And yes, staying at home on full pay would seem like a lottery win to me. Bring it on.

However, as a society we cannot afford to have everybody off who is at a HIGH risk of getting seriously ill with Covid, never mind everybody at a highER risk. And the nature of risk is that it cannot predict what might happen to an individual - there are no certainties.

I hate even thinking it, but I suspect that the death toll will go on for some years, vaccine or no vaccine. Things will improve if and when the virus mutates into something less dangerous to humans again.

The Spanish Flu is very very interesting and is relevant to the current situation even though we are not now dealing with an influenza virus. How aggressive, virulent and contagious is was, was NOT your typical flu virus and it caused a lot more deaths, particularly amongst young fit people than a 'normal' flu would normally be expected to cause.
And after wreaking havoc across Europe, it went away after some years.

Really, Reedwarbler? They sound quite contented to me! It's the ones battling every decision and coming up with reasons why it doesn't apply to them that have had the more miserable lockdowns IME.

Spodge · 03/08/2020 18:02

As I understand it, the shielding arrangements are voluntary. So they probably hope to scare the very vulnerable into shielding and let the fitter ones take their chances. I have obeyed all the rules so far but there is no way on earth that I will shield. I will live my daily life unless I have symptoms in which case I will of course isolate and test as required.

I worry if this is true ( I'm doubtful it is ) that employers will be reluctant to recruit over 50's
