Is dh kidding me on?

People are massively overreacting here.

You've only just noticed? It's 2020, critical thinking has gone out the window completely.

Darcysshirt · 02/08/2020 17:18

It might be testing the waters, but it also might be an attempt to distract attention from the rape allegations against a Tory MP.

Lifeispassingby · 02/08/2020 17:20

Over 50s are at greater risk, simple as. However healthy, fit, well you look or feel, your immune system and physical body is the age of your body regardless.

juneisbustingout · 02/08/2020 17:24

I've just been offered a new full time job to start anytime now. I'm in my early 60's.
I'd actually much prefer to be given the state pension and give the job to a 30 year old.
However I'm not yet over the hill and still have bills to pay. I'm
Fortunate that I have no extra heath needs
Happy to be isolated but need to be funded

Nanalisa60 · 02/08/2020 17:26

Over 50,s what a joke , the government changed our pension so I won’t be getting mine till I’m over 67 , so who’s going to pay me to sit in all day and watch Netflix.

Also I’m fitter then quite a few 35 year olds I know , so as I have said all along I will take my chances.

lifesalongsong · 02/08/2020 17:26

I'm pretty sure than anyone who would have been aware about the MP is not going to stop their news intake once they hear about the over 50s, those who massively over-react to covid news probably wouldn't have registered about the MP anyway

A quick survey of the online news sites has the MP story higher up or equally in the top few stories anyway.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

Noextremes2017 · 02/08/2020 17:30

Sounds like another stupid I’ll thought-out idea.
In fact - given what they knew about the age profile of coronavirus patients this is probably ALL they should have done in March.
Instead they used a sledgehammer to crack a nut and screwed up lives and futures for millions of us as a result. All under the pretext of protecting the NHS.

RandomStupidName · 02/08/2020 17:31

Most people I know who have had Coronavirus are 45-65, were sick but then fully recovered.
This is utter bollocks.

randomer · 02/08/2020 17:32

I feel we as a species are hardwired for predictability. Yes we have the fight or flight mechanism to deal with the mammoth or the tiger, but we also need to know that when we go looking for berries we can return to the same cave in daylight.

This constant high level of change is playing absolute havoc with my MH and I'm sure I can't be alone. Yes, its a virus, its a pandemic but FFS can we have some clarity instead of the politicians and the media fanning the flames.

Livelovebehappy · 02/08/2020 17:32

And how is this going to be policed? Lots of over 50s look under 50, and lots of under 50s look over. It would take a brave person to challenge a woman on her age!

ChicCroissant · 02/08/2020 17:35

Who is going to do the assessments? GP's? They are already wondering how they are going to do the flu vaccines for everyone over 50 when (according to our GP practice) they ordered their vaccine supplies last year before all this kicked off so don't have anywhere near enough.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 02/08/2020 17:36

@StaffAssociationRepresentative

Plenty of schools will struggle to reopen if that happens - not just teachers but TAs, learning support, office staff, cleaners ... Lots of schools could potentially lose 15% or so of the workforce. It will practically wipe out my maths depart and a fair proportion of science.
My school would be losing more than 15% of its workforce! Most of us are over 50! They’d be left with 6 teaching staff (mainly TAs), one caretaker and 3 meals staff. No cleaners, no SLT, no office staff........
Mothermorph · 02/08/2020 17:38

My DH is over 50, SE and the main earner for our family. If he had to shield we'd be fucked.and he would be unbearable to live with if he couldnt go out He is a healthy weight and generally fit and healthy though. I dont earn enough for all the bills and we certainly dont have the MN recommended "enough savings to pay the mortgage for a year" (I think we could probably manage a month, maybe 2)

Tubeoftoothpaste · 02/08/2020 17:39

"And how is this going to be policed?"

Shielding is individual choice anyway. No one has to do it. No need to police it

Floralnomad · 02/08/2020 17:41

Why do people need someone else to risk assess what is safe . Surely by now we all know the risks and are making our own decisions taking into consideration all of our health issues . I’m over 50 ( with lots of health probables) and I wouldn’t be partaking because I’ve still got enough common sense to make decisions for myself .

Whenwillthisbeover · 02/08/2020 17:49

53, never smoked, walk 15000 steps a day, a tad overweight (Mainly down to a love of wine and puddings), healthy eater (Apart from wine and puddings), no medication, last prescription......cant remember.

I look a lot better than Boris does.

I will partake in a risk assessment, but I’m not shielding. Who the fuck do they think looks after and cares for the very elderly and grandchildren whilst holding down their own career?

Can this government make any more random Covid gaffes? They are seriously pissing me off, who on earth makes this shit up. Is it done in the pub over a pint of flat beer after chasing some young, pretty intern around the pub shouting “I’m a Tory”

PS I Have voted conservative many times, but seriously Bozza you are an incompetent, entitled, privileged, fool and I am done, really done.

jessstan2 · 02/08/2020 18:06

@Coldspringharbour

I’m praying this this true. Imagine all those weeks off work without having to socialise.
I agree! The longer I can be entirely on my own the better for me.
vodkaredbullgirl · 02/08/2020 18:11

Im 50 and work in a care home, get tested every week.

thesedaysarescary · 02/08/2020 18:12

I would assume that anyone with a medical diagnosis that fits in the vulnerable category ( who is over 50) would be invited to take an online assessment or video call assessment with their Gp/consultant. It won't be a blanket over 50's to shield. Shielding is only advisory anyway not a law. It's not like you will go to the shop/pub/hairdresser and be turned away if you look over 50! Many companies would not allow you stay home and not go to work without a shielding letter so it will be a blessing for vulnerable people who until now have had to go to work/ have had to stay home with no pay.
I am pleased the government is looking at different ways to protect vulnerable people without locking down the rest of the population.

Patriciawentworth · 02/08/2020 18:13

I’m 50. I’ve got a bmi of 22 and run for 35 minutes a day, do weights, vegan diet, teetotal.
If the government prevented me from working, while allowing an obese 48 year old, with type 2 diabetes, to do so, that would be utterly unreasonable and pointless.

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/08/2020 18:13

As a pp said, a very large number of over 50's work in jobs which allow you to work flexible hours (supermarkets, etc). In fact 80% of the people I work with in our tiny rural supermarket are over 50. The shop would have to close if we were all told to go home and lockdown.

I run over 30 miles a week. I reckon I'm fitter than most people of 40...

Darcysshirt · 02/08/2020 18:14

I'm not saying that people won't know about it, but it's not a hot topic of conversation on the interwebs at the mo, whereas this issue is.
bevelino · 02/08/2020 18:15

They should just line up all over 50s ( me included) and press exterminate and be done with it. Or they could fly us all out of the country to Barbados and leave us there. Grin

Grottyfeet · 02/08/2020 18:17

It's not that people stop their news intake, it's that the published news is different, so the MP gets far less coverage because more pages and screens are filled with this nonsense

Aragog · 02/08/2020 18:17

Surely if its to do with health risks then the screening questionnaire ought to apply to anyone of any age.

A 48 year old with underling health conditions is going to have pretty much the same risk as a 52 year old with underling health conditions.
