Would you book to go away in the UK now?

DH has just managed to book some time off towards the end of August.
As much as we would like to go away for a week to recharge the batteries, we are aware of the R rate rising in places, and local lockdowns maybe being possible.
Are we being over cautious to consider not booking anywhere this year? Sad

You will be lucky to find anywhere decent now. Very full and very overpriced currently.

Coffeeandbeans · 01/08/2020 19:38

I’ve already done a week camping and have another week booked. It felt very safe.

Thorilicious · 01/08/2020 19:39

@Cloudyroom good point! Looking more like we'll not be going anywhere then...

Thinking about it, but will only book the day before we go. There seems to be availability where we are considering.

countdowntonap · 01/08/2020 19:42

Where do you want to go? Plenty available on Booking.com for week on 8th Aug in Anglesey for example.

AntiHop · 01/08/2020 19:44

Yes, I would, as long as you're realistic that it might get cancelled.

starrynight19 · 01/08/2020 19:45

Yes I would book somewhere , and yes we have already done that. Hoping for two separate weeks away. Boris was all for staycations.
It’s going to be a long winter so looking forward to a change of scenery.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/08/2020 19:46

Yes I would.

GarlicSoup · 01/08/2020 19:48

Not in a million years

I personally cancelled my uk break (I was able to get a full refund luckily) I just thought it might be more stressful going away and worrying about social distancing, booking places to eat etc rather than just having a lazy break at home.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 01/08/2020 19:52

I would. We have been camping for two nights locally and are currently on a weeks break to Peak District
However - we do both trips on the basis we wouldn’t eat out and want to do outside activities (walking and cycling) so the only risk involved is the accommodation itself and the occasional public Loo. I’d not bother with a city break or anything that involved lots of people and indoors personally.
I’d take advantage and go before lockdown is generally increased to allow for schools to return as that looks very much a reality now

Qasd · 01/08/2020 19:57

Safety wise yes but availability wise you may well struggle!

Aragog · 01/08/2020 20:02

Yes I would, but would try to book places where you can cancel close to the date - incase of lockdown, cancellations, etc. And then I wouldn't lose money.

I'm currently on my way home from a fortnight in France with a final night/day on London. We went by train and Eurostar and used trains in France, plus a hire car. We stayed in smaller hotels rather than resort style. We went out and about, visited attractions, ate out, etc.

And I felt safe throughout. Every train and hotel has been very quiet - really easy to socially distanced. In France we wore masks indoors everywhere unless sat having a drink or food, or in our own room. There were hand sanitisers everywhere. Compliance with masks etc was very high - few people were exempt it seems.

London today and yesterday evening was quiet - much quieter than I've ever known it - it was easy to social distance, masks were being worn indoors (much to the annoyance of the anti mask demonstrators who were marching down oxford street) And in the underground. And again lots of sanitiser around to use.

I'm clinically vulnerable and felt safe. It certainly felt no less safe than Being out and about near home, and it felt much more safe than come September when I'll be in several classrooms full of children every day with no SD or protection.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/08/2020 20:10

No because dd would want to go to highly populated places. There’s an Airbnb I saw. But we won’t be going.

FranklyDearIDontRiverdance · 01/08/2020 20:12

We booked during lockdown but it’s a big house (with private pool), which we’ve stayed in before so they’ve guaranteed a refund if we aren’t able to travel for Covid reasons. We are quite happy to go even if we can’t leave the house - just for the change of scenery more than anything else.

Hoping it happens or it’ll be the third holiday we’ve had cancelled because of the pandemic 😔

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/08/2020 20:14

I've booked to go to London but the hotel is free to cancel if needs be.

Lovemusic33 · 01/08/2020 20:15

You are likely to have to pay crazy prices unless camping. We are camping 3 times during the summer (have camped once already) and have paid a lot more than we normally pay, so far it has been all good but we have stuck to quieter areas.

Ponoka7 · 01/08/2020 20:16

My DD got a last minute booking in Yorkshire. She said everyone is being sensible and it felt safer than the days out that she has done.

My other DD went to Shrewsbury last week and again everyone was following the guidance.

ceeveebee · 01/08/2020 20:17

Booking and Airbnb have some properties that are fully cancellable until day of departure so why not if you can find something!

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 01/08/2020 20:19

Yes re air bnb cancellation - we paid an additional £50 to ensure we could cancel up to the day we came. You can filter by it on the search

123456abcd · 01/08/2020 20:26

Yes, absolutely! Go on a UK city break (am currently on holiday in a UK city), they are much quieter than coastal towns and desperate for tourists to return.

womaninatightspot · 01/08/2020 20:26

Just wondering will anyone be taking breaks later in the year? I own a cottage which is booked till mid September and then second half October. I normally don't take bookings in November till mid December as the odd weekend doesn't cover changeover/ heating costs. It is a pretty time of the year though with the trees changing colour though and no midgies :) Stone barn conversion, big wood stove in the middle of nowhere type thing.

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 01/08/2020 20:28

We’ll be thinking about going away over winter but it’s whether the Gov let it happen. If you can afford to advertise it out but with good cancellation then you’ll probably do well. It’s whether people can actually go :(

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 01/08/2020 20:31

Yes absolutely! Lots of areas have extremely low numbers still, lots of hotels actually have availability and good prices and are taking lots of precautions. I am on a budget but trying to have as much fun as I can while summer is still here. I went to a hotel recently and people were very friendly and welcoming and I had a really wonderful time. Yes, we don't know what the situation will be in 4 weeks time but most people are not likely to be living with lockdown or a significant number of cases/deaths.
