Would you book to go away in the UK now?

DH has just managed to book some time off towards the end of August.
As much as we would like to go away for a week to recharge the batteries, we are aware of the R rate rising in places, and local lockdowns maybe being possible.
Are we being over cautious to consider not booking anywhere this year? Sad

Also if you're looking for a city break - Edinburgh. Usually heaving with tourists in August, totally empty now. Loads of accommodation. Castle open, most other attractions opening shortly.

Incidentsandaccidents it surprised me what I saw when we were away.

Living in a big city everything is still quite orderly. Things are quiet, people avoid each other in the street, shops are calm.

I knew the seaside town would be busy, but I thought people would at least try to social distance. The town had made a half hearted attempt to implement one way systems in the streets, no one was sticking to it.

The beaches actually weren't too bad if you got there early, but people would think nothing of plonking themselves right next to you even when there was loads of free space.

Every pub and restaurant we walked past looked jam packed.

There were boat trips going out which were crammed full of people.

Lots of large extended family groups, some making a big show of hugging and kissing.

I've just returned from self catering holiday in Wales, felt very safe . We have another weekend away booked in a few weeks staying in a Premier Inn in a coastal town.

I had a quick search through holiday letting s the other day though looking for availability for a friend and it is true there is not much choice left and what's available is expensive.

We booked a static caravan about 10 days back, looks like a quiet beach which is our most important feature, we usually camp but decided shared facilities were not for us this year, just in case.

Hope it doesn't get cancelled, hope their pools are open even if we do have to book sessions better than nothing.

And that's it really.

It was of course top dollar for a caravan but as other options seem limited we decided to just book.

I live on the east coast, seaside resort. Its rammed. No social distancing happening as far as I can see. We stay away from the beach this time if year anyway.
We were looking to book for Cornwall May 2022. Price has gone up 200 quid in the last week and now were looking at £1700 sat to Sat, or £2400 Fri to Fri. That's with no guarantee of covid related incidents as we cant get insurance for that.
This is money I dont have or couldn't afford to lose. Dh says book it quick but I think it's a non starter.

VioletCharlotte · 02/08/2020 18:48

Yes, definitely. I've just got back from Cornwall and I'm due to go away again in October. I avoided the towns and tourist hotspots as felt the narrow streets were too crowded, but still had a great time walking and going to the beach. Plenty of cafes and pubs with outside space so felt really safe.

I'm not sure if I'd go with young children though. It would be ok if the weather was good, but it might be hard to keep them entertained on a rainy day.

Lemons1571 · 02/08/2020 18:59

@Rowgtfc72 May 2022? Shock. That’s forward planning for Cornwall even with covid!

waltzingparrot · 02/08/2020 19:08

Alternatively, if you decide not to go away, you could spend the accommodation money you would have spent on some fancy pants local restaurants that you wouldn't normally go to in a month of Sundays. Helps the local economy and presumably you'll get to eat food a cut above.

Yes
Have 2 short breaks already and am planning another

DottyDuvet · 02/08/2020 20:10

@awomaninatightspot Yes! I think you'll get bookings! We live in the South West so whilst everyone else is taking their holidays now, we are going to enjoy everything and take a break when it quietens down in Autumn 😊

DottyDuvet · 02/08/2020 20:11

sorry @womaninatightspot put the wrong tag name, read my comment above 🤣

Fuckityfucksake · 02/08/2020 20:22

Yes and we have.
We're hopefully off to Scotland for 5 days in September. Hotel and train tickets there booked.
If we have to cancel then so be it. We're keeping an eye on infection rates, English and Scottish government advice etc...
We already cancelled our holiday abroad this year as even if we were allowed to fly there, we didn't want to go.
It's our anniversary we're going for, we never spend it at home so keeping my fingers crossed we get there.

We've just been away for a week and a half in Devon and was a lovely break. We booked self catering at a castle and a cottage and both felt very safe, extra cleaning in place and at castle the swimming pool you had 2 hour slots a day where it was just your family and the mini golf / crazy snooker again it was just your family. Gardens were shut to public and restricted to 7 families in 50 acres so easy to social distance. Next cottage again remote, own hot tub, no issue with social distancing. Trips we went on had all been adjusted, gorging was just us and instructor and no contact, boat trip along coast was just 12 of us seated apart in groups, second boat trip to Lundy Island again just 12 in distanced groups, very few people on island and swimming with seals was easy to distance. Other thing was llama trekking, only 6, all distanced. If you are selective its pretty safe but now all the best ones are sold out, if can do first week September you may get things.

I would get refundable as things may shut down again. We booked last minute due to that and UK not abroad and glad we did. Original holiday was cancelled.

Uhoh2020 · 03/08/2020 06:59

Id probably go abroad before I went on holiday in the UK . Id rather do 4 hours on a flight wearing a mask to Greece or canaries where there's far less infections than the UK, than have have days on end wearing a mask going round our UK attractions, unless of course you can guarantee the weather and I'll flock to the nearest rammed beach.

Sunshiney1981 · 03/08/2020 07:59

Yes we’ve booked a week in Devon in September (got pre school children) glamping. You get your own little shower/toilet ‘hut’ so it’s perfect for social distancing. We’ll go to quiet beaches and take walks. We can cook all our own food but we’ll probably eat out a couple of times too.

kungfupannda · 03/08/2020 08:44

We’re going to our usual place in Northumberland. Beautiful beach, lovely village, pub with massive garden and tables always a long way apart anyway, and it never gets particularly busy. ‘Busy’ there would mean you had to walk 100m down the beach to have a stretch of shore completely to yourself. We know someone who lives there and she says it’s been on the slightly quiet side of normal.
