Dd starts school in September. A lot has been taken away anyway due to Covid, like no book bags or books sent home etc. We went school shoe shopping today to a local shop and she picked some lovely shoes.

A friend has just told me that the school are saying this- I must have missed read it!

I’m not bothered about her changing into trainers to play outside.

:(

Do schools usually get children to change their footwear for break and lunch? Ours just played outside wearing their school shoes?

SherbertStrawberry · 27/07/2020 16:30

Nice shoes OP. I remember we had to change from our school shoes into indoor pumps when coming inside after breaks etc, it was a proper faff. It’s one of my enduring memories of primary school for some reason, changing my shoes a lot (and the very 90s My Little Pony lunchboxes sitting on top of the shoe cupboard)

Trainers for my 8 year old too. Makes sense I guess as no need to change for pe, plus I guess they maybe going outside a bit more.

I don’t think you’re being stupid OP. I’ve had four miscarriages and then my last DC who will start school in September. I’m finding it sad as well to think that school is going to be so different to how I imagined.

You tend to fixate on the small things as a coping mechanism I think. Then they get ripped away and it feels like another trauma in a sea of upset. Try and navigate yourself through it with kindness and hopefully it will be okay. I can remember an awful lot of my childhood and I do remember my first day at school. I clearly remember my peg with my name on it. I also remember the climbing frame I was desperate to climb. I don’t remember my shoes at all 😉

Trainers are suitable for PE/lessons/outside play

School shoes are only suitable for lessons

I have worked in many schools.
I have not come across a state primary where the kids routinely change from shoes to trainers for play time or lunch time. Thye just go outside in their school shoes.

persnoally I hate Mary Janes, and hate the fact that they have become the default shoe for girls. They are not great for running round and playing, kicking a ball etc. Ballet pumps worn by some girls are even worse. They also give you wet feet on rainy days. But that is all by the way.

I don't get this changing for lunch time. They won't. So why does it matter as long as she has trainers once they do pe?

OpheliasCrayon · 28/07/2020 07:08

It's one less thing for us to change at school / risk being lost / one less thing where we need to get into all the children's personal space.
Buy some trainers. Going to reception is the milestone not her shoes.
I understand you have anxiety about this but I say this ever so gently - please don't let this rub off on your daughter. She isn't going to care about her shoes and her first day of school is still her first day off school. I'd hate to think she ends up getting upset over shoes as well

Tbf I did have a little sob over putting away Dds enormous size 7 kickers at the beginning of lockdown. Something about it seemed really poignant thinking that she really was not going to school from March to September and it all seemed real.
I may be shedding more tears if she has outgrown them in September. She is 12 and still my baby!

Charleyhorses · 28/07/2020 11:35

I'm also going to have to hunt for some decent waterproof trainers as they have to go in PE kit 2 days a week and it's a 5 mile round trip walk to school. I always bought cheapest ones I could find on the basis they would get lost or stolen. At least she won't be taking them off her feet.

JanewaysBun · 28/07/2020 13:10

My DS is hyper mobile so I'm afraid I would be sending him in whatever shoe best supported his feet (ie Clarks!).

Trainers are so non waterproof too so it's not like they are better than MJs, reception age kids there s not a lot of difference between e.g. running for play and running during PE. They're not exactly going to be Olympic level
