When the schools go back....

When the schools go back be that august or september depending on where you are, what will you be doing differently?

Will you actually send your dc in a full clean uniform daily?

What about coats? Bags? Shoes? Will you be cleaning these in any way?

Will your dc have a bath or shower as soon as they get home?

Her kilt and jumper will get washed once a week. I've only bought one of each so far (plus a cardigan). The kilt was £50!

MiddlesexGirl · 27/07/2020 13:00

Haven't heard anything at all from our school except that the usual mixed age buses will be running.
So currently no plans to do anything differently.

If new advice comes out either from school or government then of course we'll follow it.

RedskyAtnight · 27/07/2020 13:01

Clean uniform every day is not really possible at secondary school level (expense of buying multiple items of things like blazers).
School has suggested taking uniform off when they get home and to wash as frequently as possible.
Slightly ironic that secondary school pupils are more at risk than primary school ones and yet it's the primary school pupils who are more likely to be having a complete set of clean uniform every day!

Graciebobcat · 27/07/2020 13:04

DDs will be getting the bus. They do get the train occasionally but it's too expensive as a daily option.

Triangularbubble · 27/07/2020 13:05

Nothing has been specified but they wear a full set of clean clothes/uniform daily anyway, they get too dirty for anything else - eyfs and KS1. Coats get washed weekly (or sometimes daily on muddy days!) anyway. Shoes I will scrape the mud off as usual but no different cleaning. Water bottle and packed lunch stuff goes in dishwasher daily anyway. No book bag or anything else to go between home and school. Hands get washed as they leave school and then properly under proper supervision when they get in (older child admits they don’t always bother with soap at school!).

I won’t be doing anything else differently nor will I treat them as contaminated coming through the door - if the virus is at school in their “bubble” I’m resigned to them catching it and thus spreading it in our family anyway. Showering theoretical virus off their hair when they’ve sat next to each other, picked their noses, chewed their pencil, touched loads of the same surfaces, sneezed and coughed and talked at each other etc seems daft - the showering etc makes much more sense in the context of adults in hospitals etc, wearing ppe and taking proper precautions not to get infected otherwise.

AnnaMariaDreams · 27/07/2020 13:07

Ours have said no blazers- school waterproof instead.
I have bought enough indoor uniform for a wash every day so Clothes into washer, wash hands.
I think homework may be set online on the class dojo.

CazM2012 · 27/07/2020 13:40

We will walk more than getting the bus hopefully (dependant on 3YO) they won’t be having fresh uniform every day as they insist on branded cardigans/jumpers at £15 each and my kids tend to last 2/3 days anyway before they need to be washed. We will wash hands and strip down as soon as getting home but that’s quite normal anyway to preserve uniform.

Orangeblossom78 · 27/07/2020 13:41

waterproof? Like a mac?

Ours is pretty formal...think they have said may not have to wear blazers and ties but not quite sure yet.

Before the summer they just had to wear their shirts, but will be cooler in the Autumn.

Orangeblossom78 · 27/07/2020 13:42

and yes £60 for a blazer here

Mintjulia · 27/07/2020 13:43

Nothing different. Just expect him to wash his hands when he gets home.

If the school bus isn’t running, I might have to drive which will be difficult with work.

tootyfruitypickle · 27/07/2020 13:47

Christ if they want clean clothes each day it’d have to be non uniform ! We’ve not been asked for that (and how would anyone know if it’s uniform?!!). .
Will just be asking for a handwash and to change out of uniform when home- that’s it .

DominaShantotto · 27/07/2020 13:48

Nothing really (but mine have been at school for a fair bit of the shutdown so I've been through the worry curve). Tend to do a full set of uniform clean everyday - bar ties which only ever saw the washer when they'd landed in yoghurt at lunch - but the school have removed ties from the uniform for September for that reason (and having a dyspraxic starting - I REJOICE!).

PE they're going in in PE kit on PE days - again I rejoice for it might mean I'm not replacing the bastard thing or going on search and rescue missions to lost property on a weekly basis.

Lunchboxes etc get flung in the dishwasher every couple of days anyway - more at the moment since they're not allowed to throw yoghurt pots in the bin so they come home splattered all over the inside every fucking day.

DD2 has her own set of stationery anyway because she struggles to hold the school-issue stuff. We provide that as a matter of course - and since she's a pencil chewer as well - at least she's chewing her own one!

DominaShantotto · 27/07/2020 13:50

We had the clean clothes everyday request before the summer break as well - and they were using own clothes as a way of monitoring it (and knowing that head she probably had staff logging it) - it's cost me a fucking fortune in school-appropriate layers of clothing (because they have all the doors and windows open so the temperature extremes are nuts) that have been trashed since DD2 has spent weeks digging in the mud!

lufcaregoingup · 27/07/2020 13:50

It's no different for me mine have always worn clean uniform everyday as they always come back with some kind of food or muck on their clothes.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 27/07/2020 13:54

Thanks for all the responses!

We do a full clean uniform daily usually except tie and blazer but i am feeling a bit stressed out over how many "bubbles" my household is now going to be mixing with so wondered how far others are planning on going with washing etc.

Iv just found this on an email but Iv already bought school shoes. I feel sad that when she starts school she will have to wear trainers. She’s never worn trainers before 🙈

When the schools go back....
OverTheRainbow88 · 27/07/2020 14:08

I would save the feeling of saddest for worse things than wearing trainers!

labyrinthloafer · 27/07/2020 14:16

I'll be doing change of clothes every day (secondary) and leaving most things in the bag as much as possible.

That's if I send them straight back in, I'm still reserving judgment.

But have bought everything anyway.

Triangularbubble · 27/07/2020 14:20

Ok, I think that wins for the oddest thing I’ve seen someone sad about. I’m sad my children have missed education, social interaction and holidays. I’m sad that some of the things like y6 leavers plays and GCSEs are cancelled. What clothes or shoes my kids wear don’t even register- if they declare they want them in cycle helmet, swimming costume and wellies that’s what I’ll do if it keeps them in full time school, with something approaching normal play opportunities etc. Just buy some nice trainers. They’re comfortable practical shoes, nothing for anyone to feel remotely sad about.

Drivingdownthe101 · 27/07/2020 14:21

I suppose people can’t help what they feel sad about.
Lucindainthesky · 27/07/2020 14:28

(Primary child) will have clean uniform every day and a bath already run and waiting to get straight into. Lunch box and bottle straight into soapy water. Not sure yet what I will do with her coat, perhaps wipe down with something.

However DH is vulnerable and I have health anxiety which might explain why I'm a bit more over the top than others!

Mummypig2020 · 27/07/2020 14:28

I’m struggling massively mentally during this pandemic and it’s just another thing that we don’t have control over.

lljkk · 27/07/2020 15:08

what will you be doing differently?

Er, nothing. Phew! I love easy questions. :)

xLovexstoryx · 27/07/2020 15:12

I'll likely do clean uniform each day. But I doubt it will do much if there's coronavirus in her classroom. Coats ill perhaps wash on a Friday night.

LaurieMarlow · 27/07/2020 15:25

We cycle to school and wear clean ordinary clothes everyday as it is, so there won’t be much change. Obviously hand washing on arrival home.

I hope no school is expecting daily washing of blazers and wool skirts/jumpers and the like. It’s definitely time to cool it on the uniform requirements.
