Face mask - levels of compliance in your area

I’ve been to a number of small and large shops (In Suffolk) yesterday and today, and all but two of around 100-200 adults were wearing a mask/face covering, and 95%+ of those were wearing it correctly (ie over face and nose). I was surprised, firstly, that compliance was so high and, secondly, at how much people seemed to treat it like second nature and often wore their masks outside and between shops when they didn’t have to.

It would be interesting to know how common this has been elsewhere as i’ve read other reports that seem to indicate uptake is less blanket. Are certain areas more compliant than others?

West Yorkshire, went to Asda today and about 75% were wearing a mask and correctly. 25% ISH were either not wearing one or had it under the nose or only over the nose?

SummerSazz · 25/07/2020 23:12

100% in Gloucester Lidl (other than 2 children under 10) and Screwfix this morning. I was pleasantly surprised.

BilboBercow · 25/07/2020 23:12

In Scotland and very high, although I took my second panic attack in one today so I'm finding it extremely difficult. I'll continue to persist with them but determined to only be in shops for the smallest amount of time possible for essential only. My "big shop" is delivered

Gazelda · 25/07/2020 23:12

100% compliance in my small town in Hertfordshire
95% in supermarket in Wembley

LittlemissAWOL · 25/07/2020 23:14

I was in Sainsbury's today (NE) and everyone (except young children) were wearing masks including staff.

QueenBlueberries · 25/07/2020 23:14

Good, about 95% here, East London. That's in local high street shops and pharmacies, I haven't been to a big shop yet this week. It's encouraging.

RoobyMyrtle · 25/07/2020 23:15

Everyone wearing one in my local shops and hand sanitizing in and out. It was great.

HotPenguin · 25/07/2020 23:17

I was surprised to see 100 percent compliance when I went to the shops today. One person was challenged by a staff member when trying to enter a shop without one, he said sorry I forgot and put it on straight away.

After hearing so many people on Jeremy vine ranting about how it was nanny state etc I wasn't expecting it to be like that at all.

The main problem I found was staff in one shop struggled to hear my order, and it was a nightmare trying to discipline my children when they couldn't see my face. I don't plan to take my children to shops unless essential so hopefully this won't be too big a problem.

Went into multiple shops today and everyone was wearing one, I didn’t see one person not complying (even all the children I saw were wearing them too)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 25/07/2020 23:20

Yesterday I saw only one man without s mask - he was with a woman, I assume wife/partner, who was wearing one, and he had a very prominent lanyard round his neck. (Might have been his work ID, I suppose!)

Scotland, so we have had a while to get used to it.

Longwhiskers14 · 25/07/2020 23:21

In north London - I reckon in Tesco today (big superstore) there were only three or four people who weren't wearing them. I was surprised so many were complying, tbh.

managedmis · 25/07/2020 23:25

Live in Canada : everyone totally compliant at all times. Since March.

ACautionaryTale · 25/07/2020 23:25

Somerset

Visit to my independent farm shop - 5 out of 15 not wearing a mask

Two trips to Sainsbury and one to coop - about 10% not masked

Both figures include me as I can’t due to the fact my ex husband tied me to the bed with a pillow over my face for most of three days (apart from when he poured water or tea in my mouth)

No one has give.n me grief but I have taped an exemption card to my phone in case anyone does

commentatorz · 25/07/2020 23:27

nearly everyone wearing one here on the herts/essex border today, except for some of the shop staff who aren't covered by the requirement (who knows why?)

commentatorz · 25/07/2020 23:29

I'm not sure why someone commented on Brexit voters not wearing masks by the way Wink as the highest level of non-compliance appears to be in London.

I'm guessing it was just some goading but totally unnecessary Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2020 23:30

Very high in the supermarket.

Over 95% I reckon

Derbygerbil · 25/07/2020 23:31

people are taking masks out of handbags and putting them on and off in the car....But there’s no hand washing going on

Hand washing is clearly still important, but if everyone is wearing a mask then less so, as there is less likely to be virus on people’s fingers. This illustration makes the point:

After hearing so many people on Jeremy vine ranting about how it was nanny state etc I wasn't expecting it to be like that at all.

This is the point that many have tried to make here on MN - people may moan about having to wear a mask and be critical of the governments implementation of it but that doesn't mean that they won't then comply. I didn't choose to wear a mask today, I did so because they are compulsory.

Jumbojem · 25/07/2020 23:38

Pretty high compliance here. My 13 year old took his out with him, as did his friend. He told me there was one teen and a child who is very likely under 11 who were the only ones without masks. On Thursday though I was the only one in the post office who wore a mask so it seems most are only doing it because they have to rather than want to.

Nomorewineever · 25/07/2020 23:38

South Staffordshire.

Tesco - everyone wearing and a massive sign (signs) saying they are compulsory and if you don’t have one you should ask staff for help before proceeding into store. A staff member was stationed there with hand gel and trolley wipes and having discussion with those who were excluded from this requirement.

Lidl was a free for all 70% in, of which loads huffed and puffed and took off too often. The remaining 30% clearly didn’t care and no enforcement.

Derbygerbil · 25/07/2020 23:39

Judging by how the Daily Mail was covering the story yesterday morning with talk of “mask chaos” and a stream of photos of maskless shoppers, you’d be forgiven for thinking the mask laws were being widely ignored... It seems the DM’s unsubtle campaign to undermine and subvert the law failed spectacularly.

TimeWastingButFun · 25/07/2020 23:40

100% yesterday (Tunbridge Wells)

GervaseFen · 25/07/2020 23:40

Close to 100% (saw one idiot with it over mouth but under nose). Hampshire.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 25/07/2020 23:43

Everyone in masks when I went to the supermarket today.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 25/07/2020 23:46

@HotPenguin
it was a nightmare trying to discipline my children when they couldn't see my face.
Just have to get working on your Paddington Bear Hard Stare but with extra frowny brows and bulgy eyes to get 'em proper told lol Grin
