How long will we need to wear face masks for?

Just wondering when people think wearing face masks will ease?

@Twinkletwinklechocbar

Who knows?

Depends partly on whether the government are doing it for health reasons or economic.

Could be all throughout winter. Could be until there's a vaccine. Could become the new norm (I hope not).

Mumsnet seems to be heavily swayed towards masks. But when I've been to the supermarket before yesterday, hardly anyone was wearing one. If they wanted to they would wouldn't they?

I went to Asda yesterday, most people were wearing them as it was the new law, but many were quite vocally pissed off about it. Lots had scarf pulled up over their face and I saw a few visors. Even 3 shop staff were saying how ridiculous it was.

Popped to the retail park afterwards, shops were dead.

So could depend on whether footfall increases or not.

Will also depend on whether it helps drive cases down.

I'm also prepared that we are being eased into having to wear them in restaurants, cinemas, pubs.

We've been told for months that masks don't do any good. I predict that people will stop bothering before long a bit like with lockdown.

You've made some good points there.

Mumsnet seems to be heavily swayed towards masks

It was heavily for the lockdown at first on here, remember the people who were posting about their neighbours going out too much and boasting about about who could stay in the longest, that quckly died off after a few weeks and the exact opposite was then the Mumsnet thing to be done with lockdown.

The same will happen with these masks, the competitive mask wearers will soon be bored of them and demanding the legislation is changed

I went to Tesco this morning and was surprised how quiet it was. Usually really busy on a Saturday morning.

One person had a mask on, pulled below their nose 🙄

vinoandbrie · 25/07/2020 14:20

I am going to be shopping even more online, as I can’t stand masks for various reasons. Really hope we can stop wearing them in the shops soon.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/07/2020 14:23

@milveycrohn

A lot of people I know will be shopping on line instead, as it has become so much of a hassle. I expect we will be wearing masks at least until next spring, and every winter.
I'm doing that. It's bad enough I have to wear a mask when I leave my desk at work, sod wearing one shopping if I don't have to go. I can get everything I want online so why bother?

(Just to confirm for the mask stasi, if I do go in a shop I will obviously wear a mask)

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2020 14:27

Sainsbury’s was really busy this morning, nearly all wearing masks. Maybe it depends location as well (zone 2 London)

ravensoaponarope · 25/07/2020 16:28

@thunderthighsohwoe I'm so sorry you feel that way and that others judge you Flowers

notanotherdysonthread · 25/07/2020 18:14

Oh for a very long time. Especially now it's become another Leftwing Morality Crusade. That's why I'm resistant to it. There'll always be some reason to wear one plucked from the air. It'll never end.

Parker231 · 25/07/2020 18:22

Felt much happier (and safer) today shopping with everyone wearing masks. Am much more likely now to go shopping more regularly again.

ragged · 25/07/2020 19:13

Funny enough, I stayed out of a shop today due to face cover req. Teen DS went into buy sweets. I don't find the cover comfy so I waited outside in the rain. No biggie, and no chance to be tempted into an impulse purchase, either.

that’s it, I’m going to stay at home til they stop making me wear this nasty mask, and there’s nothing you can do about it. See if I care if shops go out of business... That’ll learn ya.” like a stroppy six year old

Masks are a real drag
But its all about the price tag
Now you need to do your duty.
And shop for clothes and beauty.

Dont forget about shoes.
And stuff you possibly wont use.
And you can go to the pub
Eat lots of lovely grub.

With not a mask in sight.
You can party all night.

Drinkers getting a free pass
So they can drink and fall on their arse.
Had enough of this crap
Sick of being in this trap
Up to me if i dont shop
It doesnt mean you can have a pop.
Now i play the waiting game.
But you wont make me feel shame.
I will wear a mask
But suffering in it is too big an ask.

Thanks @ravensoaponarope, you sound very kind.

I work in a shop, and I'd estimate that around 99% of adult customers were wearing masks yesterday. And our two best trading days since the start of lockdown were Friday and Saturday. So I'm not writing off masks as a failure just yet.

CountreeGurl · 26/07/2020 17:30

I'm hoping now it's normalised that people wear them every flu season even after Covid

luckylavender · 26/07/2020 17:45

@amylou8 - they'll be lots of other scary pathogens waiting to jump out and make you feel a little bit poorly.

Nasty thing to say. You'd probably feel very differently had you been affected.

HeresMe · 26/07/2020 17:53

Mask wearing should never become normalised. Never ever.

VirginiaWolverine · 26/07/2020 19:25

Why not? People wear uncomfortable things all the time because of social convention. I'd far rather wear a mask all day than most shoes. My youngest child happily wears a mask in a shop, but hid under the bed and cried for an hour before school every day for the first half term because he found it so uncomfortable, but people who object to masks don't generally complain as much about uniforms. I get eczema from wearing a watch, but I wear one anyway because it inconveniences other people if I don't know the time. I hold in farts in public for the sake of other people, even when that is uncomfortable. I don't pick my nose, or spit in the street. I carry my rubbish until I find a bin.

Living in a society is full of moments where we do things which we find unpleasant or uncomfortable or unnecessary or frightening, but we do them anyway for the sake of everyone else.

HeresMe · 26/07/2020 22:09

And this is why it's wrong people.happy for it to be normalised.

I'm wearing masks but normalising it is disgusting

When our yesterday it seemed pretty busy to me... interesting that Friday and Saturday were your best trading days since lockdown. Although I don’t much like wearing masks, I feel much happier to shop now the matter appears to have been settled and everyone (at least where I am) is wearing one. Previously, I’d been feeling uncomfortable going into shops for a couple of weeks - avoiding them where possible - as felt I guilty if I didn’t wear a mask, and awkward if i did.

Jossen · 27/07/2020 06:17

Soon hopefully. I can’t bare them. I’ll go along with it for now but there’s no way I’ll be wearing one day come Christmas time. Shopping is miserable for me now and I’ll be doing as little of it as possible.

Sostenueto · 27/07/2020 06:34

I think that wearing masks will become the ' new' norm. I can't see life getting anywhere bear normal in the immediate future. I still only go out when it is essential. Used to live eating out but will not go for a meal or to a pub as it won't be like it used to be and I don't want to catch Covid because after isolating for 12 weeks plus I'm not risking it. Just because the Government doesn't mention deaths anymore from Covid doesn't mean it's gone away. On average 60 people a day still dying from it. That's 60 too many in my eyes and we are nearly at 46,000 dead in this country. Winter is coming flu season and NHS will not cope if we have a second spike. So I will continue to be extra cautious for the forseeable future.

Coronavirus: Lockdown easing postponed and masks to be mandatory in all public indoor settings

Parker231 · 31/07/2020 13:34

If only we’d had a proper lockdown rather than the attempt we had. If it had been done properly perhaps England would have a better control of the virus. Masks, social distancing and localised restrictions are going be around for a long time.
