Am I bad parent for not putting a mask on my 4 yo?

Iv seen SO many young children wearing masks and gloves. Iv decided not to make my Dd wear one. Does this make me a bad parent? I really struggle to wear one.

And actually harassing people in public IS against the law.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:30

@commentatorz

With all due respect I completely disagree. Where people are inflicting harm on others it is a matter of civic duty to speak out. I view it similarly to passive smoking or antisocial behaviour.

You might not like it, but as you correctly pointed out, you have no right to police others who are acting completely within the law.

Oh no you misunderstand. I don’t give a shit what you do. If you ‘called me out’ in public I’d just tell my children to ignore the rude lady and keep on walking.

And this. Children not wearing masks is completely within the law. Harassing people in public... not so much.
Worldgonecrazy · 22/07/2020 09:33

‘Where people are inflicting harm in others ....’

Seriously?? You think 4 year old children out with their mum are inflicting harm?

If your levels of anxiety are that high you really need to see a doctor.

dementedpixie · 22/07/2020 09:35

If they cough, your knees or waist might get infected! They certainly wouldn't be coughing in your face which is the dangerous area.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:35

Also, what purpose do you think it would serve? Do you think I’d say ‘that angry lady is yelling at my 4 year old in public, she definitely seems the sort of person I’d take advice from, I’ll go home and mask them immediately?’. No, I wouldn’t give it a seconds thought. So the only thing you’d be achieving is being able to glow in your own virtuousness. If that’s your aim then crack on.

commentatorz · 22/07/2020 09:38

Dear me, the anti-mask brigade seem to be just as pro-police state as the science-minded majority. Making up fictitious harassment laws that don't exist to stifle free speech is something you'd accuse the other side of... I thought you were better than this.

This pandemic will eventually knock this sense of self-entitlement out of society, I'm sure of it, including your assumed right to endanger vulnerable people through selfish actions.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:38

I’m not anti mask.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:39

I’m also not anti free speech... I’ve said above, you can say what you want! More than once.
I will ignore you, as is my right.

Genua · 22/07/2020 09:40

Not anti mask at all

commentatorz · 22/07/2020 09:41

Also, no one else mentioned "yelling at 4 years olds". That's a figment of your own imagination.

But a polite word to parents to mention that refusing to accept overwhelming scientific evidence on the benefit of masks endangers society is perfectly acceptable.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/07/2020 09:41

Not anti mask either. I'm just not going to make my child wear one when he doesn't have to, as per the official guidelines. Members of the public who have an issue with that can fuck off, quite frankly.

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:42

So what is ‘calling out’ in your book? What exactly would you say to me/then?

Genua · 22/07/2020 09:42

Interesting isn’t it that no nuance is allowed. You’re either insisting on masks on preschoolers or you’re anti mask and want vulnerable people to die. Nothing in between us permitted

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/07/2020 09:42

No, @commentatorz , your opinion as an unqualified member of the public is irrelevant. What we are told to do by the government is what we will be adhering to, not your opinions.

dementedpixie · 22/07/2020 09:44

I'm not anti mask and wear one when in shops. I am not bothered by children not wearing one as they don't need to wear one. I would tell you to fuck off if you were sticking your nose in where it wasn't wanted or needed

commentatorz · 22/07/2020 09:44

You are all anti-mask, as you've all said that (for no medical reason) your children won't be wearing masks. You therefore either:

a) doubts masks' efficacy (are anti-mask) or
b) don't care about others' safety (are anti-mask and anti-society)

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:45

Actually no, I didn’t give you a reason. My children’s medical history is fuck all to do with you.

Thisdressneedspockets · 22/07/2020 09:45

Under 11s don't have to. My ten year old won't be wearing one.

countrygirl99 · 22/07/2020 09:47

@commentators I have never heard such sanctimonious twaddle in my life and on mumsnet that is saying something. If you do dare "call someone out" and I bet you are just a keyboard stasi, I hope it's someone who gives you a suitably forthright response.
If you think 4yo should wear masks contact your MP and leave parents alone. MPs make the law, not you.

Poppydaisie · 22/07/2020 09:48

What if your 10 year old wants to wear one?

C) children under 11 don't have to.

Therefore mine won't be

You have a really weird agenda here

Poppydaisie · 22/07/2020 09:49

Perhaps the English should do like the Scottish, where masks are compulsory from age 5?

Drivingdownthe101 · 22/07/2020 09:50

If you think that’s the case, feel free to campaign your MP.
Thisdressneedspockets · 22/07/2020 09:58

@Poppydaisie

What if your 10 year old wants to wear one?
Was that addressed to me? She's worn them for medical tests. She's not keen to wear one for shopping.
