For things like holidays or visiting family abroad etc, do you think it’s safe? Are you happy with flying or are you avoiding it?

Uhoh2020 · 20/07/2020 11:32

Definitely! I am flying out end Aug to Canaries that was pre booked before all this. Although you ( and me) will probably be branded as selfish from Mumsnet going off previous similar threads

Nicknacky · 20/07/2020 11:40

The only thing stopping me is having to wear a mask. I can’t be bothered with that in an airport and plane so will wait until that is eased.

RaspberryToupee · 20/07/2020 11:46

If I had a holiday booked, I’d probably be going rather than losing money. However, I’d be prepared that I may be quarantined when I arrived at my destination if someone on the plane tested positive and my holiday might not be what I expected. I can also work from home, as can DH, so self isolating at home afterwards isn’t a problem. I would also travel to visit family. Again prepared that my visit might not be the same as usual and be prepared that I might have to self isolate.

I wouldn’t book a holiday at the moment though as I don’t see the point in paying for a holiday when I’ll have to wear a mask and could be quarantined with contact tracing.

Dancingalong · 20/07/2020 11:46

Yes I would. We’re going camping instead in a couple of weeks and I’m dreading it would much rather go abroad. Hoping to do a long weekend in Greece end of September though if everything seems ok.

Badbadbunny · 20/07/2020 11:55

Nope, airports are horrid places at the best of times and have got a lot worse in recent years. No way am I suffering that, with covid precautions added into the mix. Holidays are supposed to be enjoyable breaks. For us, recently the travel had become stressful and joyless. Then, more and more attractions, museums, tours, etc were already moving to pre-booked strict timeslots which we hated as that also adds to stress and wasted time - heaven knows how much worse that will be with covid social distancing etc. I can really see us no going abroad ever again. And that's from a family who've been going abroad 2/3 times per year for the last 30 years. The enjoyment factor has been declining year on year as the experience start to finish is nothing like it was 30 years ago.

GrishainDisguise · 20/07/2020 11:59

I would love to, but cannot afford the 2 weeks quarantine abroad. I would only want to go for a week, so it makes the whole family visit pointless.

Sertchgi123 · 20/07/2020 11:59

NO WAY.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/07/2020 12:09

I would but my holiday has been cancelled so I'm not flying until February now.

meercat23 · 20/07/2020 12:13

Our September trip to Tallinn has now been cancelled but we would have cancelled anyway.

Each of the last few times we have flown I have then gone down with some virus type illness. The last one, (Last October) was really quite nasty and lasted for ages)

Flying is generally not a nice experience anymore and the space limitations, crowded airports and planes and air recirculation etc make me feel that it is just an added risk at the moment.

My age makes me more vulnerable though so if I was younger and healthier I might feel differently.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/07/2020 12:54

No, too risky I feel. Not to mention the quarantine procedures, getting ill in another country, lockdown occurring etc. Plus lots of things won’t be running as usual and likely crowds.

Holidays to me are about relaxation and seeing new things, I can’t imagine it feels like that currently.

MayFayre · 20/07/2020 13:02

No

Dowser · 20/07/2020 13:07

We were evacuated from Tenerife in mid March under horrendous conditions
So yes I would fly now as they are not going to have 3000 of us penned in an airport

I wouldn’t go back yet anyway..too hot
We are due back In October so yes we are going..however I’m holding off getting flights just yet in case Spain starts bringing in more rigorous rules

@Badbadbunny
Just wondering why museums and things we’re getting so strict pre covid
I can’t bear that

OnceUponACat · 20/07/2020 13:09

We are going to fly. Can’t see the airport being worse than ikea last week.

PuzzledObserver · 20/07/2020 13:12

No, probably not until we’re vaccinated.

I wouldn’t say anyone who does is selfish, though. They’re presumably doing their own risk assessment and coming to a different conclusion.

2155User · 20/07/2020 13:12

Have booked 3 holidays for the next 6 weeks.

Anyone who outright says no they won't needs to educate themselves on risk assessment.

99victoria · 20/07/2020 13:25

My son is getting married in France in September. They've been putting off making a decision about whether to go ahead and last week decided to go for it and have paid the balance on the venue, so yes, I'll be flying hopefully, in about 8 weeks.

daisymay133 · 20/07/2020 13:26

I have no issue with flying as I’ve researched and it’s sqfer than being in a closed office environment

But having booked barcelona last week which went into lockdown 2 days ago I won’t be re booking as it’s not reliable enough

I’ve lost all my money as local lockdowns aren’t covered

Delatron · 20/07/2020 13:27

I’m flying on Saturday. I’ve been to the hairdressers (busy), had a pedicure, sat outside at the pub etc. These are risks I’m prepared to take. The air on aeroplanes is filtered not recycled. There is some risk yes. But whilst cases are quite low here and our destination, it’s a risk I’m willing to take right now.

Cases could go up in autumn or this could carry on the Spring and summer next year. Who knows. Trying to get on with life now whilst following guidelines and doing a risk assessment for me and my family.

MashedSpud · 20/07/2020 13:30

No.

Parker231 · 20/07/2020 13:33

Definitely yes. We’re going to Belgium to see my family and then to France - Dordogne area to see friends. Am really looking forward to a holiday now.

bengalcat · 20/07/2020 13:36

Just been to Iceland and back . Wore a mask for the flight . Used to it as wear one at work anyway . Had no concerns . No quarantine necessary on arrival if you pay for testing or arrive with a negative test ( we opted to arrive having been pre tested to avoid uncertainty ) .
Have some flight vouchers and Eurostar vouchers for trips not taken earlier in the year so need to work out when and where to use them as doubt Covid will be largely off the radar within their expiry period .

BackInTime · 20/07/2020 13:40

Probably not but not out of fear of catching the virus but the whole experience doesn't seem very enjoyable. Having to wear a mask for hours, travelling with people who are stressed and jumpy about everything, temperature checks, random swab testing on arrival and possibly risk of quarantine abroad all puts me off.

zafferana · 20/07/2020 13:42

I've flip-flopped a bit on this - initially I was in the 'no way' camp - but I think I would now that cases in this country are so low. So yes, I'd fly to another country in Europe, particularly if I was going to SC when I got there, and definitely if it was the only way to see my family.

OpheliasCrayon · 20/07/2020 13:43

Yes

Roselilly36 · 20/07/2020 13:44

No way, and I absolutely love a sunshine holiday, personally I find it hard to wear a mask for a medical appointment, to wear one in airport & on the plane, I just know I couldn’t do it, then the risk of local lockdown, no thanks, we decided months ago we wouldn’t have a holiday this year.
