Would you fly at the moment?

For things like holidays or visiting family abroad etc, do you think it’s safe? Are you happy with flying or are you avoiding it?

We go on holiday every year. However, this year we are going to give it a miss. I just can’t be bothered with the stressful airport experience, the uncertainty about whether restaurants, bars, museums will open.
We used the money we would have spent on a holiday on home renovations.

@PaddyF0dder

No, not taken into account the risk of spreading it to others, simply talking about catching it yourself.

I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, I'm simply saying what I've known

Parker231 · 20/07/2020 17:34

@PaddyF0dder - you obviously don’t want to travel but this doesn’t stop those of us who want to.

iVampire · 20/07/2020 17:42

No

Shielding has not yet paused

But even when it does, being that long inside an enclosed space would be against advice (we’re being told we can do our own essential shopping and go to Covid-safe work, not that we can go in for indoors leisure/non-essential activities)

But even if I were not unusually vulnerable, I don’t think I’d be particularly interested in non-essential international travel.

The insurance position is probably totally buggered and I don’t fancy being stranded in quarantine abroad.

Lots of lovely places to visit in UK

Nixen · 20/07/2020 17:46

Yep! Hoping to go to France in 3 weeks and to see family in September. Worth the (small) risk for us

Cismyfatarse1 · 20/07/2020 17:47

Flew to Venice last week and I am on my way back to the UK now.

The only difference is masks and lots of airport amenities (shops, cafes) are closed. The plane out was 1/3 full and lovely and spacious. The airports are empty and Venice was an absolute joy with hardly any people there and those that were seemed to be Italian.

Honestly, I can't imagine a better time to travel if you value space, calm and want to get both during the summer months.

PaddyF0dder · 20/07/2020 17:54

@Parker231

I certainly don’t intend (or have the means) to stop others.

Probably bears repeating the foolishness and selfishness of international travel during a pandemic though. We all carry the responsibility for this thing.

PaddyF0dder · 20/07/2020 17:55

@2155User

Strange for an expert in risk assessment to not have considered this.

Car crashes tend not to be infectious.

edgeware · 20/07/2020 17:56

I already have. It was fine.

AgeLikeWine · 20/07/2020 17:59

No.

I’m in a high-risk group due to asthma, so I won’t be flying anywhere or spending extended periods of time in any other environment where social distancing is impossible until this nightmare is over.

FinallyHere · 20/07/2020 17:59

We always avoid travelling in school holidays, so the question doesn't really arise for a month or two. All business travel has been suspended until further notice and has been replaced by the widespread adoption of video conferencing even for those meetings formerly considered essential to be held in person.

We are beginning to mix with other people but only outdoors. While the weather here has been so lovely, I am glad to have no inclination to go on holiday.

I am of course very sorry for those in the travel industry, whose livelihoods, like those in coffee shops, sandwich bars and restaurants, depend on customer demand.

At some point I may be moved to travel by air again. I've done plenty in my lifetime, since a babe in arms and am rather enjoying staying in the same place for so long for the first time ever. Not in any hurry to start again.

2155User · 20/07/2020 18:00

@PaddyF0dder

Never said I was an expert, but I certainly think the media has given people a very negative view which sometimes in necessary and means they see things as more of a risk than it actually is

Makegoodchoices · 20/07/2020 18:07

No, not for me. Stressful start and end to a trip would negate the joy of the trip for me. This year we’re staying home and chilling out with friends who also won’t be holidaying.

kimlo · 20/07/2020 18:11

less than 2000 people died in the uk in a car crash in 2018, and one of thise happened to be my friend.

No I wouldn't go at the moment.

With an underlying health condition I don't know how insurance would go.
The risk of localised lockdown in an unknown place.
I don't do well in the heat and can't tolerate a facemask for long at the best of times.
I don't think I would find it very relaxing.

Parker231 · 20/07/2020 18:17

@PaddyF0dder - we’re going to countries where there are no FCO restrictions. We’ll stay with my parents and then with friends. Lower risk that going on holiday in the UK.

chocolatviennois · 20/07/2020 18:18

No. I wouldn't fly at the moment. We are going abroad by other means.

When you are in a plane you have no control so if someone keeps coughing next to you you can't move out of the way as you would in a supermarket, train, ferry or any other indoor environment.

PaddyF0dder · 20/07/2020 18:22

@Parker231

And if you infect them? And they infect others?

Parker231 · 20/07/2020 18:25

It’s an incredibly low risk and one we’re all more than happy to take. Less risk than getting the Tube to work each day or going to a packed UK tourist area.

I’m not staying at home . We need to get on with our lives.

PaddyF0dder · 20/07/2020 18:27

@Parker231

And that’s the problem.

Parker231 · 20/07/2020 18:28

What problem?

ssd · 20/07/2020 18:29

No, but I'm very cautious.

Iamclearlyamug · 20/07/2020 18:29

I flew on Wednesday last week out of Gatwick, it was amazing. Almost empty, no queues.

Wasn’t prepared to wait any longer to see my fiancé, we’d already been apart 5 months

PaddyF0dder · 20/07/2020 18:32

@Parker231

All the little individual decisions and risks and compromises and “I’ll be fine”s. They all add up on a societal and species scale. They all help to prolong this thing.

We need to think bigger. It’s not about what we as individuals want or feel we deserve. It’s about what societal changes will hasten the end of the pandemic.

Parker231 · 20/07/2020 18:34

we’ve spent enough time putting our lives on hold hiding away inside. I want to my family and friends. The virus could be around for years.

2155User · 20/07/2020 18:35

@PaddyF0dder

Out of curiosity, when would you say it is acceptable/safe to fly/travel etc?

What do the statistics have to look like for you?
