BBC News Winter Wave - anyone else read this and feel really depressed?

BBC News - Winter wave of coronavirus 'could be worse

We all knew this is likely, but having the scientists actually make those predictions is pretty depressing :( I got through first lockdown with some big anxiety at the start but then just put my head down appreciating our house and garden (we are the lucky ones!) Dh working from home, me busy with ds on maternity leave.

With restrictions easing it's been nice to visit the parents again, see mil as part of her help with our bubble and care for ds. We've even seen a couple of friends on distanced walks. We're not going to any restaurants or anything.

And then to think it'll go back to how it was in April but even worse. Lockdown may not be as severe in order to try and save jobs. I also think people are desensitized the second time around. They think sd is enough so wont keep careful. I worry for our vulnerable, my keyworker friends and even how I'm going to entertain my increasingly mobile and needy ds.

Mental health will take another bashing. I'm a planner so need things in the diary to accomplish and keep me going. Arghh. Anyone else?

Government doesn't want to have to financially support people again so hopefully they will put all measures advised in place to prevent a second wave. Fingers crossed!

I don’t think the government want to do that either, tbh!

@MinesaPinot

I think it's a disgrace that the BBC are putting stuff like that out. If you go on to read the article it says that they are not saying it will happen, just that it could - think worse case scenario. It is scaremongering at its highest and appalling but not unexpected from the BBC - the Daily Mail of on screen media.
It is the reasonable worst case from a report commissioned by the GOVERNMENT'S Chief Scientific Officer.

I am sick of people shooting the messenger because they can't deal with the message!

This is totally standard, none of it is a surprise and it would be insane for the BBC not to report official government research.

Maybe read the report: acmedsci.ac.uk/more/news/prepare-now-for-a-winter-covid-19-peak-warns-academy-of-medical-sciences

Yes, it is worrying. That's not the BBC's fault!

labyrinthloafer · 14/07/2020 13:04

@Rainbow12e

It won't happen. The virus will ne gone by the end of the year or near enough. Death rate is very low now.
Hmm yeah, sure. Like in America?
labyrinthloafer · 14/07/2020 13:07

@MintyMabel

It's all bollocks. Based on the same models that made an error with numbers right at the beginning of this.

Let's just wait and see.

The first figures weren't wrong.

@Rainbow12e

I have stayed optimistic throughout and my predictions have come right each time. Please think positively. We are over the worst and things will only get better from here.
So you predicted more than 40k deaths, and you still feel positive Hmm
Sallycinnamum · 14/07/2020 13:20

Well OP you can prepare for a winter of cosiness and watching the twinkling bloody Xmas as was suggested on yet another frankly bonkers thread yesterday.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 14/07/2020 13:20

We are all doomed, was my reaction

MintyCedric · 14/07/2020 13:38

I've spent the morning making plans for a second wave.

I work in a secondary school and will be back full time in September with all the associated lunacy. My asthma is not considered serious enough to qualify for shielding (even against a backdrop of 2 x whooping cough and collapsed lung previously), and I have a daughter at the same school - don't even want to think about the risk factor.

I've also got elderly, frail parents and we've no other family if it all goes to hell in a handcart.

Summer hols start next week. I'm going to have a thorough clear out of the house and garage and am aiming to have a month's supply of food, toiletries, household goods & meds in place by the end of September at the latest.

MintyCedric · 14/07/2020 13:41

The thing is, although I do worry about the worst case scenario, it's also about logistics.

Even if we're lucky enough not to get the virus you're going to have all the problems associated with another lockdown, panic buying etc. I just dont want the added stress if we have round 2

BabyLlamaZen · 14/07/2020 14:03

@rainbow12e unfortunately it's this kind of thinking that'll create a horrible second wave.

Honestly every single time people go 'oh no they'll neverclose schools', 'oh no a young person has never died from it's, 'oh no you can't catch it from surfaces it's impossible', 'oh no face masks are useless, we'll never have to wear them!' You have to stay ahead of the game, actually listen to the subtext and be smart. So many people were gobsmacked by lockdown. And yet anyone who actually listened to the scientists saw it coming a mile off.

So many people need to be spoonfed information and even then dont get it. So frustrating.

I think it is scaremongering- it’s a scenario based on what would happen if the government does nothing. It may be completely accurate, but it’s not going to happen because the government will take action (and hopefully be quicker than last time round).

This is like an argument from Alice in Wonderland Confused - it isn't scaremongering if it is a report specifically intended to set out what the situation would be without mitigation.

You can't write a report saying this is where we'll be if we do X y z because first you have to know why you need to do x y z and so you need to know what will happen if you do not do X y z....

labyrinthloafer · 14/07/2020 16:19

Plus without these reports the numpties who think it'll just burn out less worried portion of the population would say there's nothing to worry about

It's good to be prepared and have a plan though.
CrunchyCarrot · 14/07/2020 16:31

Not depressed, no, and do remember that's a worst case scenario, although since we are also ending Transition, I can't see how this winter is going to be a good one, it's inevitable there will be flu about as well as Covid-19. I will be very surprised if there's a vaccine available by winter, especially in large enough amounts to vaccinate everyone who wants it. But am prepared to be wrong about that.

I'm a prepper and have started increasing my prepping again as I used some stocks during lockdown, I aim to be ready long before winter arrives.

Geraniumblue · 14/07/2020 16:49

The report itself is not scaremongering. Plastering it all over the bbc news is, because it is not news. It’s not a current event. It hasn’t happened. It’s a forecast that is useful for the government.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 14/07/2020 18:15

i can't afford to stockpile

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 14/07/2020 18:15

otoh i do think people need to be aware of the facts and less laissez faire

quiteathome · 14/07/2020 19:17

Maybe it came out at now to help to convince people to wear facemasks. I think a lot of people are getting very complacent.

I will get enough food etc in, incase we end up needing to isolate. Then some more bits and pieces because of Brexit no deal.

I would rather know the worst case scenario.

Whatever happens this winter is not going to be fun.
