How many people are wearing masks when you go to the supermarket?

I’m in the north east, and it seems like people are really anti-mask here - I counted the mask-wearers in Lidl and Sainsbury’s today and only about 5-10% of everyone I saw was wearing one. Is this the same in the rest of England and Wales (obviously it’s different in Scotland)? I always feel like a prat wearing one because people stare, and there are loads of couples and families wandering around as if everything was normal. It’s been about the same level all through the lockdown, so it’s not like people are relaxing more now that cases are going down.

In Morrisons everyone including staff, apart from a couple of till operators and 1 customer. I'm in Scotland and there wasn't this level of mask wearing last week.

cremuel · 13/07/2020 18:17

I’m down in England (Surrey and Hampshire) on holiday from Scotland and the difference is amazing. I feel like I was the only person in Sainsbury’s with a mask on. In Scotland it flipped really quickly as soon as it became compulsory - I think they need to do that in England.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/07/2020 18:19

Same as you, about 5-10% of people. I don't wear one in shops myself.

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2020 18:20

I reckon around 40-50 per cent of people are wearing masks in the supermarket I go to most regularly here in Ireland.

crosseyedMary · 13/07/2020 18:21

south coast, 20-30% in tesco 8pm ish

TheSandman · 13/07/2020 18:21

I'm in Scotland. I was in 5 stores on Saturday; Lidl, Aldi etc. I only saw ONE person not wearing a mask. And she had a loose scarf bunched up round her face pretending it was one.

Triangularbubble · 13/07/2020 18:24

Maybe 1/5. Mostly disposable ones, often worn very badly.

Derbygerbil · 13/07/2020 18:24

The shop workers don’t wear masks where I am...
even the likes of Tesco and M&S. I expect that will change very shortly.

In fact a couple of days back a member of staff - without mask or visor - was helping an old and clearly vulnerable person with self-scanning shopping... she was within 1m,
sometimes well within, for a good couple of minutes and making little attempt at distancing.... I thought that was appalling.

I'm in Norwich and in my local supermarket (Waitrose) I would estimate maybe 10-15% wearing masks, but it seems predominantly older people.

Redcrayons · 13/07/2020 18:29

Aldi, nobody.

Also noticed that the sanitising station was empty.

TheLegendOfZelda · 13/07/2020 18:31

Maybe 1/50

People are very compliant though. Make it a law and they will cream their knickers to be the most masked person on the street. So virtuous.

Thinkingg · 13/07/2020 18:32

I was in the north during lockdown and have now gone down south, have noticed many more mask wearers here, from being a rarity to maybe just under half. Many of those with masks are East Asian people, who seem more comfortable with the idea.

I'm pro mask wearing, think it is a good way to keep the R number down while opening up more activities.

happysunr1se · 13/07/2020 18:36

I was the only one wearing a mask in m&s today, that includes the staff.

I have my own shop, I wear a mask for each consultation (some of which go over 15 minutes), because if I get called up by a customer telling me they have tested positive, I believe the fact I wear gloves and mask for each customer visit exempts me from having to isolate in these circumstances. I also am only seeing customers by appointment and clean all surfaces with antiviral spray etc etc after the customer has left, btw.

I really don't understand why british people have this problem with masks. I am not including people with health problems that excuse them from wearing masks, but everyone else.

Why wouldn't you do this small thing for the good of your community. Does it just boil down to; "no one tells me what to do"

Some of my customers even refuse to use the hand sanitizer. One told me I didnt have to wear a mask because she was immune!

OllyBJolly · 13/07/2020 18:37

DH just back from Waitrose - he says 100% mask wearing for customers and staff. We're in Scotland.

HandsOffMyRights · 13/07/2020 18:38

West Midlands 1/50. Staff not wearing them either.

UmbrellaHat · 13/07/2020 18:39

London. Only see masks on middle-aged grim faced overweight couples and overweight younger women.

tinytemper66 · 13/07/2020 18:41

I wore one today and maybe 3 others in a large Tesco. More wear them in sainsburys.

OnceBitten25 · 13/07/2020 18:42

Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿- everyone wearing them in my local Aldi and Sainsbury's

FedUpofLockdown123 · 13/07/2020 18:45

I'm in Scotland and almost everyone I've passed has been wearing them in shops since Friday.

SimonJT · 13/07/2020 18:46

We wear them if we go in shops etc, we did go to the pub yesterday, but we had an outdoor table. There were quite a few people with masks in sainsburys yesterday, but no staff had them on. We’re in north London, I did notice that it tended to either be very young or the very old in masks and very few middle aged people wearing them.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 13/07/2020 18:47

Bit of a mix then, but it seems like my area isn’t unusual! If they do introduce a requirement like in Scotland I’m sure everyone will suddenly produce masks! As for whether they wear them properly - there are always some with their mask down by their chin, or just over their mouth! You wonder why they bother at all...

Hardly anybody here but if/when they become compulsory I'll have no problem wearing one.

Babdoc · 13/07/2020 18:50

Scotland. Everybody wearing them, but might as well not bother as they’re doing it all wrong!
So many people have the mask pulled down to expose their nose - prob to avoid steaming up their specs - so they’re breathing unfiltered air straight over the top of it. Others pulling the mask right down to talk to shop staff. Others handling the mask with their fingers, scratching their nose, etc, then handling their credit card or shopping. Others stuffing a mask in their pocket as they come out of one shop, then sticking the same one back on, with both surfaces contaminated.
As a retired doctor who spent 36 years in operating theatres, it makes me despair. Our old theatre sister would have given them all hell!

Whitegrenache · 13/07/2020 18:53

North east too and yesterday in a big Tesco in consett about 5% customers had masks on and no staff were wearing any
No queues to get in either
