How many people are wearing masks when you go to the supermarket?

I’m in the north east, and it seems like people are really anti-mask here - I counted the mask-wearers in Lidl and Sainsbury’s today and only about 5-10% of everyone I saw was wearing one. Is this the same in the rest of England and Wales (obviously it’s different in Scotland)? I always feel like a prat wearing one because people stare, and there are loads of couples and families wandering around as if everything was normal. It’s been about the same level all through the lockdown, so it’s not like people are relaxing more now that cases are going down.

I thought the law in Scotland was to wear a face covering - which she was?

Yes it is - and she wasn't.

Her mouth and nose were clearly visible and uncovered. Maybe she was exempt (medical reason?) and feeling uncomfortable about being so out of the ordinary that she was trying to give the appearance of wearing a mask without actually doing it.

Not supermarket, but work for a well-known shop. About 20% are wearing masks in-store, but we've had a massive increase this week with people buying masks.

Hopingforsummer1 · 13/07/2020 22:03

We're in a rural area in the East Midlands and I can count on one hand the number of people wearing masks in supermarkets at any given time (including both customers and staff). I haven't worn one myself yet but I'm convinced by the evidence and will start doing it now. I'll feel self-conscious but it's the right thing to do.

schnubbins · 13/07/2020 22:06

100% here in Germany

balzamico · 13/07/2020 22:08

There was a lot more wearing them in Waitrose today than I've seen in Morrisons and Aldi where I usually shop! Still only 50% at most I think

PaddyF0dder · 13/07/2020 22:11

In Scotland, it was maybe 20% or so.

Since it became compulsory, seems to be close to 100%.

ThatDamnScientist · 13/07/2020 22:11

@lljkk

ps: I don't for a moment think face covers are enough to get our kids back to school, I'm pretty sure the kids will still be very part time, but they might at least get SOME ongoing in person education related to better test-n-trace plus face covers plus mass gathering bans + lots of other normal things still being banned.
I thought school was definitely going back full time I August/September and part time wasn't permitted at all.

@Babdoc

Scotland. Everybody wearing them, but might as well not bother as they’re doing it all wrong! So many people have the mask pulled down to expose their nose - prob to avoid steaming up their specs - so they’re breathing unfiltered air straight over the top of it. Others pulling the mask right down to talk to shop staff. Others handling the mask with their fingers, scratching their nose, etc, then handling their credit card or shopping. Others stuffing a mask in their pocket as they come out of one shop, then sticking the same one back on, with both surfaces contaminated. As a retired doctor who spent 36 years in operating theatres, it makes me despair. Our old theatre sister would have given them all hell!
That's what we need @Babdoc scary straight talking matron to give clear advice to wear one and do it properly.

Not Bojo and his piffly inability to make a decision

IKEA888 · 13/07/2020 22:14

Scotland about 90% here.
but... it's made people care less about the 2m rule.

shushymcshush · 13/07/2020 22:16

DH reports 1 mask wearer in Aldi (him!) and cleaning station gone. 1 in maybe every 25 in Tesco last week, and 1 in 3 in M &S (northern England).

DamitJanet · 13/07/2020 22:20

I’m in Norwich, but have only really visited our small local Tesco. Really notice an increase in mask wearing over the past week or two, when I went in there today about 50% were wearing masks. (Customers not staff)

Sunsage · 13/07/2020 22:22

North Coast NI and rarely anybody wears masks, I've just ordered myself a cotton reusable one as seemily everybody is business as usual again and I'd like to feel like I'm doing my bit rather than just mingling with everybody again so soon.

gluteustothemaximus · 13/07/2020 22:22

I wear one, generally see one other or maybe two others at most.

That was in Iceland, more masks in M&S, but still not the majority.

Littlemissdaredevil · 14/07/2020 04:51

I went to a supermarket in a small town in Devon. I was the only person wearing a mask

soundsystem · 14/07/2020 05:21

I'm in East London and there for seem to be more people wearing masks now where I am. Maybe 60%?

I really wasn't keen (I'm autistic, so it's a sensory thing, nothing to do with not wanting to be told what to do), but am getting used to it now.

BillywilliamV · 14/07/2020 06:06

Well you've won, you mask wearers!
Although they STILL do bugger all.

I wonder if somone will ever work out the ratio of lives saved against businesses destroyed!

Jolly Well Done!

Pinniped · 14/07/2020 07:40

Scotland. It's been strongly recommended here for weeks and is the first thing on the FACTS campaign (F for wear a face covering). So far wearers have been the minority - maybe 10-15% max? Come Friday I didn't see anyone not wearing a covering. The supermarket had stopped the one way system.

KatherineJaneway · 14/07/2020 07:44

I'm in London and very few are wearing them in the supermarkets I go in. However did go on the bus yesterday and most people were wearing masks. One bloke got on without one, bus driver challenged him but he did that 'I'm completely oblivious' thing.

Grandmi · 14/07/2020 07:54

In the southeast and Brighton mask wearing is fairly common. I feel sad for the elderly, the very young and people with mental health problems and/ or confusion who really rely on facial expression to understand the world . We are really living in a shitshow and I cannot see how we will ever get back to normality!! I find it terrifying that these viruses are sitting in labs anywhere in the world and they can just ‘escape’ !

usernotfound0000 · 14/07/2020 07:56

Yorkshire, hardly anyone wears a mask here. I was in Asda last week and along with me, I saw maybe 5/6 other people I masks. No staff were wearing them either.

custardbear · 14/07/2020 08:12

East Midlands here - fair few wearing masks yesterday, but much less than 50%

doadeer · 14/07/2020 08:35

I'm in north london and 70% wear masks. I'm from NE and I'm scared by how casual everyone is up there, packed beaches, no masks

Llamazoom · 14/07/2020 13:15

South coast. Pre our massive caravan site reopening staff in our supermarket didn’t wear masks but many of the older local shoppers did.

Popped in on Saturday, it was full of holidays makers not social distancing, over excited kids running around, few masks but most of the staff were wearing them, not a local face to be seen though.

Roll on September when they all fuck off home.

BiddyPop · 14/07/2020 13:25

Dublin. Depends on which supermarket and location (we're between a very working class and a very upper class area), but the least is around 40% and generally 75% or so in the past number of weeks.

I have only been into small shops other than supermarkets, and that has generally been high compliance with the recommendations.

I don't really know about large stores (other than Decathlon, which had about 66% compliance at the weekend).

DH and I have been using masks for over 3 months now, and teen DD will wear hers inside a shop (but only puts it on as we walk indoors and takes it off as soon as we exit - but does wear it when needed).

You get used to them.

pasteldechocolateconchispa · 14/07/2020 13:28

Hardly anyone. I wear one when I shop. I’m glad it’s mandatory now, especially in my borough should have been before covid Grin
