Another local lockdown

When does everyone think there will be another local lockdown? They keep mentioning it, but nothing has materialised yet.

There will be local lockdowns for a while now Leicester is a city lockdown, interesting article about behaviour below, small Somerset town the culminated in people yelling at an 18 year old in a supermarket.

So this is our "new normal" or could be. It's up to all of us to try and ensure that it doesn't end up this way.

I don't think the latest case numbers suggest anywhere really in the running for this. Areas that have had high recent levels such as Bradford all look to have their case numbers coming down.

There is a list in today's Observer (headline) but the 20 areas listed don't seem to have case levels that are anywhere near justifying a local lock down.

Folkestone is on that list - its cases for the previous three complete weeks were 36-29-26, and since last Monday just 4 cases, even with this week's numbers still to be firmed up from the past 2 or 3 days I think Folkestone is heading in the right direction.

However if you were asking somewhere to be identified as next lockdown, irrespective of whether any numbers and local evidence really justify it, my money would be on Blackburn.

Redolent · 12/07/2020 18:23

I think some people find lockdowns exciting. No idea why.

PatriciaHolm · 12/07/2020 18:25

From @rp131 on Twitter; no area is anywhere near the level of Leicester, these are the areas with top 6 latest rolling averages. Hereford we know about; Blackburn and Peterborough bubbling up a bit, though still very low in absolute numbers - Blackburn 14 cases on Thursday, 9 on Friday; PB 8 or 9 most days last week, though 14 last Sunday which kicks 7 day average up this week.

I live in Kirklees and am really concerned we may be next even though our numbers are currently a long way of Leicester. We keep having small outbreaks in factories and the numbers aren't coming down as much as I would like. On the other hand I knownthat it is only a small area of Kirklees that is producing the cases and I hope that if we do have a lockdown it will be focused on the problem areas.

MarshaBradyo · 12/07/2020 18:38

Leicester far exceeded all other areas so I doubt there will be anytime soon. Last chart they used when it happened anyway

Keepdistance · 12/07/2020 18:45

The guy in burnhams story does sound dodgy though. Shouldnt generally be wasting tests on oh i fancy one before going back to work. Though obviously a % will test positive just randomly. And there was another local person test positive.

torydeathdrug · 12/07/2020 19:19

There are masses of tests though - huge capacity not being used. Anyone who needs/wants a test can get one.

The Burnham on sea story is a bit concerning. The bar staff took covid test the next day, it tested negative. They are now back at work.
Doesn’t it take longer to get the virus in your system to have a positive test? I know they might be a symptomatic, but from seeing the covid positive chap to testing in under 24 hrs.

All sounds terrifying.

boys3 · 12/07/2020 19:44

The situation on the farm in Herefordshire looks to be a good example of what a local(ised) lockdown should really be - targeted and proportionate to the issue at hand

I think some people find lockdowns exciting. No idea why.
I agree Hmm

Stellakent · 12/07/2020 19:46

Why - are you concerned it's going to be in your area?

They really do. No idea why. I’d happily never hear the word again.
Keepdistance · 12/07/2020 20:52

But if he had no symptoms he could either be presymptomatic or asymptomatic or be still shedding from a previous infection.
The ons study is only finding 12-14 in thousands of people tested.
It didnr really sound like t&t were going to do much.

Yetiyoga · 12/07/2020 21:02

What does it even mean though? Are people in Leicester to stay home? Can they drive elsewhere? I can't see local lockdowns working to be honest unless they make it stricter and stop people leaving their town/ city.

Juststopswimming · 12/07/2020 21:06

There do seem to be some posters very eager for more lockdowns. Probably the same ones who await the daily sadly death statistics. Seriously strange.

There is plenty of test capacity. Better for people to take one for no reason than not have one. In my area if you try and book a test there are 5000 available slots in the next 5 days. In an area that has had 5 positive tests in the past 7 days.
Lissy23 · 12/07/2020 21:56

I don’t want lockdowns, I was just curious. I live near to one of the current ‘problem’ areas. But not in it, just bordering.

That's exactly what they are doing, when restrictions were relaxed in the rest of England Leicester had to go back to the start. Shops shut, schools closed, no one allowed to go on holiday.

I've seen police on the news checking where people are going, massively increased targeted testing, huge issue of sweatshops etc. Have you not seen any of that?

frozendaisy · 12/07/2020 22:28

@Keepdistance

Ok so a 30 yr old man gets a test with no symptoms, for whatever his reasons but he comes across as quite socially responsible, and not the type of person that would go out drinking if he was showing symptoms yet he gets social media " ...'ave you out" messages. Yeah this is really going to encourage others to test as a precaution which is what we need people to do. But no let's witch hunt them and people who came in contact with non-symptomatic them during the evening instead.

We need people especially those with contact facing jobs to get tested just in case. Reacting like they deliberately set out to infect is not going to achieve this.

I have concerns that the lynch mob mentality will win.

Keepdistance · 12/07/2020 23:29

I agree we dont wanr lynch mobs. But it doesnt change that fact that it doesnt fit with the rules for testing. So he either lied to get a test... Or now to say he had no symptoms.
Teachers are already reporting kids sent in ill. People told to isolate from italy didnt and had people in their houses etc. So whilst he probably is completely innocent, and a good thing he was tested, he must not understand how the testing works as you only test positive a couple -maybe 2 days before symptoms and i dont think would have been able to prove he then caught anything at work if it were negative beforehand as that only means he wasnt in those 2 days, but incubation can be 1-14 even up to 28d.
Just like the pub owners testing doesnt mean they havent caught it from him (or anyone else) which is why they dont test contacts as they could still come down with it.
Though they are randomly testing people in say Leicester so who knows if it's true about not picking up.
That is why he is being trolled though i assume. If it were explainable as a test he was asked to do then that would hopefully shut people up.

Sat watching the news avidly waiting for death figures and lockdown while stitching their masks together that will save them. Or as they keep announcing will save others. Weird
Yetiyoga · 13/07/2020 13:52

@lifesalongsong no I haven't seen any of that to be honest. And that didn't happen at the start anyway. I live in a busy big city, there were never any police out during the start of the lockdown..so I've no reason to believe they are strict now.
