Has anyone had Covid but nobody else in the house got it?

So in early April when I was 35 weeks pregnant, I had the strangest illness. I had two nights of awful, awful heart palpitations. They really frightened me and I wad scared to go to sleep. I've never had palpitations in my life. At the time my partner said if it didn't stop he was taking me to hospital. However they did stop and then I got a few days of chest pain, with a bit of a bad throat. We hadn't been anywhere in weeks but with being pregnant I had been to midwife appointments. At the time I did wonder if it was Covid but my partner and my two kids didn't get ill so I assumed it wasn't possible and just put it down to anxiety or whatever. The reason I suspect Covid again is that I have had a bad throat and chest pain on and off ever since. I had a really bad throat in labour but tested negative. A few weeks ago I had a very bad throat and chest pain again so I did a home test and was negative. But since April I feel like for a few days a week I have a cold. Its mild and doesn't effect my life but it's there and annoying. I have noticed on walks my chest is tight. Being an EY teacher for 10 years and having my own young kids, I have been exposed to so many germs that I haven't had a cold in years and years so it seems weird.
Anyway, that was a long winded way of asking has anyone else had Covid but nobody else in the house got it?

My weird symptoms aside, its weird that not all the family get it. I am sure that I read somewhere it has quite a low attack rate within households

A colleague went back home at the start of lockdown. Her brother and mother got Covid, she and her dad didn’t. All living together.

KitchenConfidential · 12/07/2020 16:30

its weird that not all the family get it but do you actually KNOW they didn’t get it because without testing there’s no way of knowing Plus the one thing we do know about COVID-19 is that a very high percentage of cases do not have symptoms. It’s one of the biggest problems with containing it.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 12/07/2020 16:33

My friend's husband had it. (Positive test)
She and their children tested negative.

I know a nurse who has worked on a Covid ward throughout, who has tested positive for antibodies, although she had no symptoms and her boyfriend, who she lives with is clear.

Indecisivelurcher · 12/07/2020 16:37

Interested in answers here. My fil age 72 has been ill for a month with a temperature, sweats etc for a fortnight, 2 days of a raspy throat and taking a long time to recover, still feeling weak, sitting about and napping. He did a home test that was negative, but quite possibly missed the window to test as was at least a week into it. So obviously we now don't know if it was or wasn't covid. Mil has not been ill. She's more vulnerable than fil due to having type 2 diabetes and other underlying health conditions. Any thoughts?

bellalou1234 · 12/07/2020 16:39

I had loss of smell, slight headache. Had the antibody test at work and have them. Live in a small house, dp and dd had no symtoms and no antibodies as they were tested too..

I've been having a Google and the results from studies, mostly from China, seem to suggest that about 14% - 20% of members of a household get infected by one individual.

yarncakes · 12/07/2020 16:53

I am certain I had it in March. My husband and son was both fine and didn't get any symptoms as far as I was aware. However my husband was very poorly with coronavirus symptoms in December time (he had flu before and said it was worse than the flu) which makes me think he already had it.

UltimateWednesday · 12/07/2020 16:54

If only 20% of a household get it, where one member is infected, it must surely bring into question the need to avoid contact outdoors and close public loos?

Yeah bizarre isnt it? Surely if you dont catch it from family members sharing a home, you aren't likely to catch it anywhere else? I wonder if they do have and are asymptomatic, the ill one isn't very infectious or some people just aren't susceptible. I thought I has covid at the time but because nobody else got it I just forgot about it. Now these lingering colds are making me wonder. I will ring doctor but feel like I am wasting their time a bit

That said, if contact tracing is requires names of people spending 15mins less than 2m away, I wouldn't have to include my two teen sons who I live with Grin

I had a really sore throat and tonsills for the last 2-3 weeks plus a temperature. I still feel drained. I don't know if I had it but no one else in my family did.

Delatron · 12/07/2020 17:17

There was an interesting thread on this a while ago as many of us knew of households where only one person had symptoms and others had none.

I think there are many asymptomatic cases out there and have been. I also think some research is coming out to say a certain amount of the population have some kind of immunity due to having had a previous coronavirus, a different one but it still seemed to offer some protection.

All this is interesting. I don’t think we have all the answers yet but if there is some natural immunity in the population that is a good thing going forward until we find a vaccine/

Oh really? I will have a search for that thread thanks! Yeah I read about that the other day that there might be existing immunity

I've had similar symptoms and to be honest I'm putting it down to hay fever. The pollen count has been off the chart this year and lots of people who are not normally affected have been suffering. It might be worth trialling taking an antihistamine for a week to see if it makes any difference.

SuperficialSuzie · 12/07/2020 17:29

I know of someone who is regularly tested (NHS) she has always tested negative. Her and her husband were in contact with someone who tested positive so her husband had a test and he tested positive but had no symptoms.

Yeah I will do that before bothering a doctor. I have never had hayfever in my life like but I have heard pollen is really high this year

My hay fever has been awful this year, really bad. Tight chest, on and off sore throat, sneezing, stuffed up nose, tickly throat, have had those symptoms for maybe 3 months.

Rebelwithallthecause · 12/07/2020 17:44

Chest pains and palpitations aren’t in the (ever growing) list of symptoms though

I had sore throat for weeks
No appetite, no taste or smell, migraines on and off and extreme weakness and tiredness
Only a very mild cough though

I’m assuming everyone got it as family and friends who I saw became very ill some ended up with pneumonia

Some didn’t get any symptoms so I assume they had it but were a symptomatic

Which is why they are so sure people who have been in contact with someone with it should isolate and why it’s so easily spread as it’s done silently without being obvious from just coughs and sneezes

Ethelfleda · 12/07/2020 20:44

I’m betting anxiety and/or hay fever OP.

I’ve had very similar symptoms myself over the past few months.
Although I may well have had COVID in March - fever, aches pains and the cough with a nice round of shortness of breath afterwards. Textbook Covid symptoms...
