Is anyone else feeling very paranoid?

That there’s something more going on?
I’m not normally into conspiracy theories and I’m not about to start now. But I’m feeling on edge like never before.
From what I can see, this virus has a high survival rate, around 99% and the mortality rate is likely much lower than estimates suggest due to the fact that many cases are asymptomatic or mild and haven’t even been picked up on in testing.
The majority of deaths are in the over 65s.
I’m just feeling extremely paranoid at the moment. I’m worried I’m going crazy! As no one else seems to be questioning things. Anyone else?

I notice we are not being bribed to go eat out in restaurants and cafes with 50% off midweek. Interesting given that it could cause likely death for most of us

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 14:50

(given the narrative we are being fed by some media)

PuzzledObserver · 08/07/2020 15:04

then I read that the Black Death was recorded in China.

There are a few hundred cases every year, easily treated with antibiotics, not a problem.

Covid-19 - vast majority of the population still susceptible, a small minority of those would die or have long-term effects, but because so many are susceptible that would be a huge number of people. So measures to disrupt transmission are still important.

On the upside - we are learning all the time about treatments, so death rates will fall (at least where health services are not overwhelmed), and progress on vaccines looks promising.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 08/07/2020 15:23

@BumbleWumble

What other potentially deadly disease is there that spreads with the ease of Covid and without intervention would overwhelm society with the sheer number of cases?

Don't do that, please- pretending that I said or suggested there was any such a disease is so silly when my post, which you quoted for goodness sake, says no such thing Hmm.

I'm happy to respond to you if you are going to comment on the actual content of my post, but I don't have any interest in discussing what you are pretending was said.

iamapixie · 08/07/2020 15:31

I understand and feel similar. I can't believe we've allowed ourselves to create a society where literally nothing matters other than Covid, and so quickly, and with such glee from some quarters.

vera99 · 08/07/2020 15:31

I wasn't paranoid and then I thought I pop over to the Mumsnet coro threads - have read this thread and now I am more paranoid go figure.

Loveinatimeofcovid · 08/07/2020 15:35

I must admit that I don’t understand the panic. But mass hysteria is a thing and it’s not like this isn’t still a pretty nasty novel virus. It’s a bit of a leap to go from In don’t get why everyone’s freaked out over this, it doesn’t seem that bad’ to ‘it’s a worldwide conspiracy and everyone is in on it’.

FrugiFan · 08/07/2020 15:42

@BigChocFrenzy

Lockdown is no longer necessary (except probably for future local lockdowns like Leicester)

but it was necessary at the time:

to stop hospitals being overwhelmed
to build up mass testing, track & trace systems
to bring down infections to a level where these systems would be enough to manage the crisis after lockdown is lifted

The UK's lockdown has lasted much longer than most countries' because it was imposed too late

e.g. in Germany where I live, schools returned pt on 4 May, my gym and all shops reopened 16 May, restaurants from 18 May etc

I agree with this. At the time the lockdown was necessary. Especially as reports from some countries were suggesting 3-4% mortality. The NHS was not overwhelmed and we now know much more about the virus and are at a stage where local outbreaks can be contained. It is time to lift lockdown.
beatrixpotterspencil · 08/07/2020 15:57

I think everyone is handling the information (or the conspiracy theorist's favourite slogan 'disinfo'!) badly.

looking down on someone for being afraid, wearing a mask.....
looking down on someone for getting on with it regardless.
we all handle it differently.
people are quite cruel to each other.

now, I handle it perfectly.
for just £250 I can sell you my secret!

bibbitybobbitycats · 08/07/2020 17:49

I don't think there is "something more" going on. If we hadn't locked down it is likely more people would have died and the NHS might not have been able to cope, although we will never truly know whether lockdown was the right thing to do.

It's interesting to look at Sweden. It only loosely locked down and now has the 7th highest death rate in the world and that's with the advantages it has such as lower population density and more single person households etc. So with that in mind what would have happened here without lockdown or with a looser lockdown?

My worry if that the lockdown was supposed to buy time to make sure the NHS could cope. Will it be able to cope if there is another spike?

bibbitybobbitycats · 08/07/2020 17:52

On the other hand, perhaps Sweden will be closer to herd immunity now? Their case rate is a fair bit higher than ours?

crosseyedMary · 08/07/2020 18:02

I believe the virus was probably created in a lab and released accidentally, possibly deliberately

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 18:12

Hmm. Sweden has just changed to 1m social distancing not sure about the immunity but there is a change there

bibbitybobbitycats · 08/07/2020 18:16

Was it 2m before Orange?

Orangeblossom78 · 08/07/2020 18:39

No, they didn't have it before, just told them to be sensible.

Atadaddicted · 08/07/2020 20:37

Not in the slightest.
Not even a teeny weeny tiny bit!

DianaT1969 · 08/07/2020 21:29

Does anyone else feel a sense of déjà vu with these threads?

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/07/2020 21:31

Yes

tobee · 08/07/2020 22:20

I think the worrying thing is, however bad or not so bad this turns out to be in the final reckoning, that people will think the reaction to the next viral pandemic will be cry wolf iyswim.

Fed up with my posts posting twice! Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 08/07/2020 22:26

Ive noticed that a lot lately.

sickandtired87 · 08/07/2020 22:34

I am scared of COVID 19. Just as I'd be scared of any virus with pandemic potential. It looks like it can be nasty and not enough is known about it yet.

The government also scares me tbh. They absolutely knew a pandemic was overdue, they even had 'trial run exercises' in recent years, which concluded that we were not ready, and needed to get ready. What did they do to prepare?? Nothing!! . They were slow to act when it happened and it took them ages to procure PPE and set up test and trace (which is still not finished), changing their strategy every few fucking mins, whilst bumbling about, pretending they know what they are doing. I'm not being party political here, I just mean most governments in general. Scary how little control they have when nature decides to fuck with us, and how little they care about our lives at the end of the day.

What can we do though??

All we can do is abide by any lockdown called, social distance, wash hands, and wear masks.

I will admit to being angry at those who (medical issues aside) won't wear masks or distance or wash their hands often. It's not a hardship to wear a mask or distance from people out with your Family and close friends or wash your hands.

We just need to do what we can. Use common sense and listen to respected scientists and medics who, the vast majority of the time, don't have an agenda.

sickandtired87 · 08/07/2020 22:42

An example.

We were told for ages 'masks are of no benefit'.

We were told this when masks were really difficult to get and the government were trying to procure them for healthcare settings.

We are now being told to wear them on public transport and in shops.

Some people throwing their toys out the pram in an "I won't do what you tell me" manner.

The fact is, that masks were always of benefit. Science shows this.

Listen to serious scientists, serious medics, and common sense.

TheMurk · 08/07/2020 22:51

Masks are of no benefit unless they’re of a medical grade.

Homemade masks, paper masks with gaping sides, masks people wear touch fling in their bag and never wash, “face coverings” which is my absolute fave ie just pulling your jumper up over your mouth... come on to actual fuck. Someone somewhere is having a right old laugh with this. Next they’ll be telling us to hop on our left leg and bark like a dog to scare it away!
