Does anyone miss the daily briefing?

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/07/2020 08:05

I feel so out of the loop these days.

I miss hearing about the daily death rates because no matter how much time I spend looking for the information on the internet, I have never been able to find it.

I try to catch the news every day to hear what’s going on but between going to work and dealing with the children I can’t keep up to date. We used to joke that 5pm was always “mommy’s time” where I would shut myself away from the household so I could watch the briefing and see how things were unravelling and progressing. I used to like listening to the different ministers to see what changes they were putting in place to try and improve things but now I have little idea as to who is doing what.

Has Boris even been seen since he put an end to the briefings? It just seems like he’s washed his hands if it all. Even a weekly briefing would have been nice.....mind you, maybe there is one and I just don’t know about it??

Anyone else feeling the same or are you all glad to see the back of the briefings and the repetitive questions?

I don't miss them, it has been announced if anything significant happens they will hold a briefing, which is plenty. I thought the questions became so off topic most were a waste of time.

frozendaisy · 06/07/2020 09:00

Depending on your preferred news platform daily new infections and deaths are all reported.

ICouldBeTheOne · 06/07/2020 09:02

No. And I never really understood the people waiting with baited breath for daily death rates.

DilloDaf · 06/07/2020 09:03

I don't think we need them daily at this stage, but there should still be regular press briefings, perhaps once a week. And we need to know in advance when it'll be.
I know BJ said they'll do them when needed, he appeared last Friday to rally everyone for the pub openings, but unless glued to the BBC 24/7 people will miss seeing it live.

Still happening in Scotland. Nicola sturgeon likes the sound of her own voice.

Juststopswimming · 06/07/2020 09:05

You "miss" hearing about the daily death rates? Wow

howells · 06/07/2020 09:07

I get my information by lurking on the daily numbers thread on here.

CherryPavlova · 06/07/2020 09:08

I don’t miss the briefing because I get information through work but I think it’s more government manipulation when the daily death rate remains higher than when we went into lockdown. Despite high R rates in some areas and ongoing contagion, despite track and testing being farcical, the message is go and get drunk now. My friend, Mr Weatherspoons has spent the money we gave him so go and undo all the work ordinary people have done.

kerkyra · 06/07/2020 09:10

I miss them too.
If you type in worldometer coronavirus, there is a daily chart showing all the countries and the daily cases etc.

QueenofmyPrinces · 06/07/2020 09:11

Yes, God forbid I have an interest in a pandemic that is unnecessarily killing thousands and thousands of vulnerable people in our country.

Or is it that you think we aren’t entitled to know of the severity? Or that we are entitled to know but we aren’t allowed to want to know? Or do you think the ostrich, burying our heads in the sand, approach is what we should be taking?

Or what word is it you are telling me I’m allowed to use?

Also - I said I missed the daily briefings as a whole, not specifically missing hearing about the death rate alone.

I'm in Scotland and prefer that there are still briefings.

Why not??

And I'm no SNP member. My political leanings consist of 'get these Tories out they are impoverishing many and literally killing some disabled people'.

Lindy2 · 06/07/2020 09:17

The worldometer site is good for keeping track of uk figures and those from around the world.

I'm also part of the Zoe Covid symptom tracker research and lots of good information is on there. Right now quite often reassuring information which I personally find very helpful. If you sign up to that you'll have regular updates. You just need to answer a health question each day.

Juststopswimming · 06/07/2020 09:19

You start your second paragraph with "i miss hearing the daily death rates" You then go on to claim you cant find them anywhere, so yes - my wow still stands.

If hearing on a daily basis about the number of people who have died from the pandemic is a critical part of your daily "mummy routine" then the daily sadly death numbers and infection rates are easily found on a multitude of news outlets.

BlusteryLake · 06/07/2020 09:24

I don't miss them. We have moved out of emergency phase and the move away from daily briefings reflects this.

EventRider1 · 06/07/2020 09:29

Nope. I found they were far too depressing for me, especially having just had a baby. I stopped watching them and the news altogether. My DH still watched the news and kept me updated if anything major happened that I needed to know about.

palacegirl77 · 06/07/2020 09:30

OP ignore the sniping comments. You can't say anything on here without someone having a go at you. I totally known what you mean. After having my kids all day we did the same, OH came in and I'd have half an hour or so to watch the briefing, catch up on any new info and review the new cases and death rates. When youd watched them daily it was reassuring to see these figures going down and the percentage change etc as sad as the figures are. I like the information and although it is available online it was a good, regular way of getting that info to the masses. However, I definitely don't miss shouting at the tv over the lines they spun and some of the decisions and I'm maybe a bit less stressed for not watching them!

I assume the questions are just about symptoms and whether you are displaying any?

I particularly miss being able to follow the logic (if there is any) to the easing of lockdown.

As it stands I think a lot of people find it frustrating that they are allowed out to the pubs to get drunk at the weekend, but you’re not allowed to go and visit family.

Some of the questions during the briefing were repetitive but at least the Government were having to face the difficult questions and were having to deal with the confusion and frustration of society. At the moment, with nobody publicly questioning them it’s almost like they have just washed their hands of us and don’t have to answer to anything.

We get the same info daily in a table without having to listen to them trip over their words for 45 mins

FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 09:41

Oh yeah it was totally the highlight of my day Hmm

If you want time find the death rates for each day it literally takes 10 seconds to google. I just typed in "UK covid deaths today" and found about 10 different pages with it in. Try worldometer, daily mail online, BBC news, any other news outlet.

FrugiFan · 06/07/2020 09:42

Except they never actually answered them

TheGlaikitRambler · 06/07/2020 09:42

I like that we still get them here in Scotland, it is not yet time to stop them.

Lindy2 · 06/07/2020 09:45

That's the daily health question but from time to time they'll ask questions regarding specific areas they are researching. This week it has been on blood groups. There's also a weekly question on how often you are going out.
