Are you still avoiding supermarkets?

Not so long ago, anybody admitting going to a supermarket was screeched at for being a murderer. Is this still the case?

I remember being told I wasn’t allowed to go to the shop to buy pads, tampons and ibuprofen as I was murdering old ladies. Of course I still went and probably go to the supermarket twice a week.

I've never avoided going. There's no covid juice running down the aisles.

foamrolling · 05/07/2020 11:50

Were you? Were you really? Actually accused of murdering old ladies? Right-oh.

I'm going more than I was. We were keeping to once a week now we pop in more frequently. Seems a bit daft to restrict myself when people can go for a mooch round primark

FluffyKittensinabasket · 05/07/2020 11:50

It’s just interesting how that’s changed since April. I wouldn’t be surprised in 12 months if they are still people saying it’s too dangerous to go to a supermarket or they’ve been dismissed for refusing to go back to work.

I've been going the whole time and have never been screeched at? I prefer to shop than try and fight for a delivery spot I don't need...

Llamazoom · 05/07/2020 11:52

I’ve been going to the supermarket the same amount all the way through lockdown as I did before, every 7-10 days, I don’t like supermarket shopping so have always done big shops.

Ilikewinter · 05/07/2020 11:52

No, I never avoided supermarkets, im not avoiding B&Q the garden centre or clothes shops either....although i have drawn the line at Ikea....and if I could persuade DH id be going abroad for my holiday!.

Billyjoearmstrong · 05/07/2020 11:54

Not been in a supermarket since the beginning of March and don’t intend to for a long while.

There has always been a huge amount of click and collect slots here though, they have never been hard to get.

We’ve been very strict though and my family have been nowhere. I’ve been through an awful pregnancy so far with lots of complications so I don’t need even the tiniest risk of covid on top - having to go to a hospital where two midwives died of covid every week is more than enough risk for me.

foamrolling · 05/07/2020 11:54

I doubt if there will be many refusing to return to work or go to the supermarket other than people who suffer from anxiety.

And it seems perfectly normal that people's behaviour changes as lockdown rules and guidelines change. Why wouldn't they?

It'll be a shame for the cool kid anti-dementors though when they have nobody to rip the piss out of though.

Billyjoearmstrong · 05/07/2020 11:55

(Two midwives a week didn’t die - I have to go every week. Poor wording).

Mintjulia · 05/07/2020 11:55

I’ve been to Tesco once every ten days for the last 4 months.

No one has screeched at me, and I haven’t caught anything (I have done an antibody test).

If anyone has been horrified by my risk-taking, I haven’t noticed Grin

TimeWastingButFun · 05/07/2020 11:55

I've definitely cut down, I used to go more or less every day and now I plan the week's meals and try to go once a week (plus another weekly shop for my mum in a different area).

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2020 11:56

I assume OP is talking about being screeched at on MN. In the early days of lockdown posters were vilified for going out for milk or bread as though they were luxury items which they could do without. Anyone who went out for any shopping was told by some posters that they were murdering the sick and elderly. Those were dark days. I rather think/hope people have become more sensible now.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 05/07/2020 11:56

Oh here's another 'let's take the piss out of the vulnerable and shielding thread..

Imagine being worried about a pandemic when you've been told you're highly likely to die if you get infected.

This is why I get funny looks and eye rolls when I step off the pavement or path to avoid large groups of people who aren't letting people past.

Yankathebear · 05/07/2020 11:57

I go every 2 weeks. For me it’s due to anxiety rather than covid.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 05/07/2020 11:59

Would you really be happy to go back to work with the public if you've been told you're extremely vulnerable? Am I allowed to be concerned, and not hysterical?' .

GrimSisters · 05/07/2020 11:59

6am weekly Morrisons shop - its really quiet at that time of the morning and can whizz round quickly.
Occasionally pop to Tesco on my way home from work, but I'm boycotting them now (Mermaids £80k donation) or to Waitrose for friends' birthday flowers, but always wear a mask and don't care what people think.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/07/2020 11:59

I've been going twice a week the whole time. Sometimes even for non essentials.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 05/07/2020 11:59

VaTeLaverLesMains - I’m actually classed as vulnerable so...

OP posts:
frustrationcentral · 05/07/2020 11:59

We definitely have cut back on how frequently we go. We've managed to get a delivery slot for most weeks, sometimes having to stretch to fortnightly, so have only had to do one full shop in store since March. It's not due to being scared of the virus, I'd just rather leave the shops emptier for those that haven't had the option to get online shops

TheDrsDocMartens · 05/07/2020 11:59

I don’t like supermarkets at the best of times so sticking to delivery from them & local shops.

Redact · 05/07/2020 12:01

Going to the supermarket has been unavoidable. I've tried to go as little as I can, but have always done that anyway.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 05/07/2020 12:01

So are you supportive of people who are anxious about return to work or being sacked?

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2020 12:01

@VaTeLaverLesMains I don't think the OP is taking the piss out of the shielding and vulnerable. She is talking about posters who in the early days said that anyone who went out more than once every two weeks to do shopping were likely to be killing people. It was a huge overreaction. People who are shielding wouldn't have been out anyway and so would not have been at risk if people went for shopping every few days.

TERFWars · 05/07/2020 12:01

Lidl is fine.

Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s I avoid as far as possible.

Not because of the risk of CV itself - but because the queuing outside and one way system, necessary though they may be, make the entire experience a massive, frustrating ball-ache.

There’s nothing quite as soul destroying as getting half way down a long fruit and veg aisle, realising you forgot apples but that they’re twenty feet behind you and there are people coming up behind you too - and then having to loop all the way around the bloody aisle to adhere to the one way system and go back and get them.

I swear last time I ‘nipped’ to Asda I must have walked 3 miles in doing this several times 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

DobbyTheHouseElk · 05/07/2020 12:02

I haven’t been to a shop since March. I’m still too anxious.

I have panic attacks in supermarkets anyway pre covid. I’d got them well under control and don’t want to start them up again.

I am thinking of having a test run soon. I know it’s pathetic, but anxiety isn’t a joke.
