Are you still avoiding supermarkets?

Not so long ago, anybody admitting going to a supermarket was screeched at for being a murderer. Is this still the case?

I remember being told I wasn’t allowed to go to the shop to buy pads, tampons and ibuprofen as I was murdering old ladies. Of course I still went and probably go to the supermarket twice a week.

Haven't been near a supermarket since the first week in March.

Ruddy marvellous.

Rubychard · 05/07/2020 12:03

Op, was it you who was told to put cheese in their coffee as milk clearly wasn't an essential? Grin

At the end of the day, we've all got to eat, so we've all got to shop somehow. Personally, if I got a home delivery slot, I'd be taking it away from someone who really needed it, so I've just had to get on with it.

During deepest darkest lockdown I shopped once a per week. This had to go up to twice when I started shopping for other people.

You just gotta do what you've gotta do.

When I had a premature baby (long before Covid) we were told not to take her to supermarkets at first as they’re germ factories with so many people in them and touching things and I still keep that in mind.
Also round us there are always ques so we don’t just pop in any more as it takes so long.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 05/07/2020 12:04

*I doubt if there will be many refusing to return to work or go to the supermarket other than people who suffer from anxiety.
*
It's this sort of thing which winds me up. Like shielding people are just a bit neurotic.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 05/07/2020 12:04

VaTeLaverLesMains - where exactly do I say that people shielding will be sacked?

OP posts:
VaTeLaverLesMains · 05/07/2020 12:07

It was someone else saying' refusing to go to work' OP. Not all replies are to your posts I'm just sick if the criticism against anyone who is being careful.

Pipandmum · 05/07/2020 12:07

I was cautious initially but if you managed to get a home delivery you were accused of taking slots away from vulnerable or key workers. As a single parent household I did go out, but tried to keep it to a minimum.
Now queues barely exist and yesterday I got a Tesco delivery slot for today. I even went in to a clothes shop the other day.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 05/07/2020 12:08

VaTeLaverLesMains - doesn’t shielding end in August though? www.gov.uk/government/news/plans-to-ease-guidance-for-over-2-million-shielding

People shielding can go back to work if their workplace is safe.

I appreciate that they may be anxious. I am classed as “vulnerable.”

I just don’t think that the people “sobbing and shaking” because someone went to buy an Easter egg are behaving in a rational way. Or adding cheese to coffee instead of milk. Or telling me to bleed freely instead of buying tampons. That isn’t normal behaviour.

Apolloanddaphne · 05/07/2020 12:08

@VaTeLaverLesMains I think you are bringing your anxiety to a thread which I think was a light hearted attempt by @FluffyKittensinabasket to look at how attitudes to shopping might have changed over the lockdown period. No-one is having a pop at vulnerable or anxious people.

Topseyt · 05/07/2020 12:09

I’ve never avoided going to the supermarket. I have been to Tesco weekly since the start of lockdown and DH has done a smaller top up and treats shop in Aldi or Lidl about midweek.

If anyone had tried to tell me I couldn’t or had screeched at me about being a murderer they would have got very short shrift indeed.

There are some nut jobs around, and yes, we saw them on here too. I remember someone saying that milk was not essential and those of us who liked it in coffee or tea could surely just put cheese in it instead. They seemed to be totally serious. You sometimes just have to laugh at the twattery.

VaTeLaverLesMains · 05/07/2020 12:12

I don't think working with the public will be safe on August1st any more than on July 31st. The shielding advice after August 1st
says 'limit contacts with people outside your household'. Anyway I'll go as I'm not lighthearted enough about a serious public health crisis.

Well only on mumsnet not RL these people are insane and hysterical.
At the beginning of lockdown we had 1 or 2 saying that walking to the shop daily was murder / going for a walk daily was murder etc.
I wonder if they still feel like this ?
On a recent thread about Leicester people saying about bringing the army in to force lockdown, they just love the drama of it all because they have no life .
I see it as we have to live just try and be careful.
If you don't want to go to the shops or pubs then don't go but let others allow to do this . Everyone's life has been on hold and now they want to get out there you can't blame them for that .
I'm sorry for the many that have died I really am but not leaving the house until the virus is gone is going to be much much worse for everyone.

underthelights · 05/07/2020 12:15

I’m in the supermarket once a week and that’s pretty much it. I just wear a mask. Not keen on the queues to get into any clothing shops and I don’t need anything anyway so avoiding.

CaptainMerica · 05/07/2020 12:16

I've been to Cosco once since lockdown, and a corner shop a handful of times. DH has been to Lidl 3 or 4 times.

There has been no problem getting delivery slots here though. I cancelled my regular delivery slot for a few weeks when there were availability worries for the vulnerable. However, beyond those couple of weeks there seemed to be lots of slots available again, so I booked it back up.

It's a 50 mile round trip though, so not something I ever do if I can help it. Normally I might nip in on my way home from work, but I'm still WFH and not felt any need.

Alison18031 · 05/07/2020 12:21

Haven’t been to a supermarket since mid March, home deliveries worked well, not planning on going there any time soon. Wasn’t a fan of spending time on grocery shopping pre lockdown either, would do everything online on a train on my way to work

Armi · 05/07/2020 12:21

I last went to a supermarket in mid-March (lots of click and collect slots here) but I made myself go to M&S Simply Food a few days ago because it was building up to being a real issue for me. I’ve been super careful throughout lockdown and realise, as we come out of it, I need to start making myself do ‘normal’ things again otherwise I might never get back to normal.

I was very nervous. Parked up outside and sat for a bit in the car to understand how the queue was being managed, watched how people collected and returned trolleys and what the assistant then did with them. Made sure there were no crazy Mumsnetters throwing fruit at people for buying milk. Once I got inside, it was bliss. I spent a bloody fortune and it felt like a bit of my normal life coming back. AND I got to eat piles of beautiful M&S food.

KylieKoKo · 05/07/2020 12:27

I'm going less often and being more organised about making a list so I don't forget things and need to pop back but that's more due to having to queue than being worried about covid.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/07/2020 12:33

We don’t have a car so have always done a fortnightly online shop, then regular top ups on the way home from work.

There was a period where we couldn’t get an online shop, which meant we were going to the supermarket fairly often. Now that’s settled, and we’ve fallen into a rhythm where I go once to M&S, DP goes once to Lidl.

I often pop into Boots after M&S, but haven’t been in any clothes shops. I don’t see the point when the experience is so drastically changed - happy to buy online.

The hysteria on here about people buying a packet of biscuits or a bottle of wine was bonkers.

bengalcat · 05/07/2020 12:40

I'm going with the same frequency as usual - didn't change frequency of shopping during lockdown - big shop weekly instead of my usual delivery and would top up as required with wine , milk , almond croissants for those indoors that weren't going out to work and a newpaper with the mini Waitrose at the bottom of my road . Love the lack of waiting in checkout queues . Bemused at woman in mask and gloves picking up and replacing at least three red peppers - gave in to " paranoia" at that stage and bought packaged peppers .

Qasd · 05/07/2020 12:42

I am but because of the queues not the virus risk we sorted out the ocardo delivery after the initial crash so use that and local shops to top up where necessary. I have not been in a proper big supermarket since mid April

mightbealittlebitmad · 05/07/2020 12:55

Never stopped, went to my local small shop this morning for milk and will need to go later for lunch stuff for tomorrow because I forgot to buy them.

Tomorrow I need to go and collect a clothes order from another supermarket and will do a bit more food shopping whilst I'm there then in the evening go to work in a pub.

I've even been to the shop just for wine! People are still standing so I haven't killed them off.

Deelish75 · 05/07/2020 12:58

My pre-Covid shopping habits were to get a delivery at the weekend and nip in midweek to pick up fresh milk, bread, fruit and veg etc. Since COVID we've continued with with the weekend delivery. (DP vulnerable so we qualified) although I did nip in a couple of times to pick up bits missed off the delivery. Sainsbury's then introduced C&C at my local store, there's always slots so I've started using those for my midweek one. I leave things like washing detergent, dishwasher tablets etc for midweek now to get the total over a certain amount.

I haven't been non -essential shopping yet, but I do need a couple of things so I'm going to go this week.

ginghamstarfish · 05/07/2020 13:02

Haven't been since March. Have online delivery every week or 10 days, which is enough for us. Will perhaps go in the next week or two when face masks are mandatory (am in Scotland) although there will of course be twats not wearing them to make a point, although what it is other than 'I'm a complete moron' I can't imagine.

Tinamou · 05/07/2020 13:02

I never normally go to the supermarket anyway - I always get mine delivered. In lockdown it's been impossible to get a delivery slot so I switched to click and collect and I'm still doing that.

Elieza · 05/07/2020 13:11

I’m still shopping only for food. Twice a week.

No going for a stroll round a charity shop or b&m looking for random bargains.

Basically just what I need/want that’s in the particular shop I’m visiting (I go to four, rotating not all the same week, as some have things others don’t).

I wear a mask and go half an hour before closing as it’s quiet.

Just trying to stay safe. I’ve seen horrific programmes on TV ( the STV one about Italy most recently) which were scary.

I’m not prepared to increase my risk of exposure to CV for a new shower curtain or bathroom mirror or some other non essential crap, so I’ll do without it order on line instead.
