Going to the pub

A friend has asked if I’ll meet at the pub soon and I just don’t feel confident about it. We’d be sitting on a picnic table which means being pretty close together albeit outside.
I know it would be good for the children to see each other again (we both have 1 each and they’ve missed each other) they’re old enough to be sensible
But I have been socially distancing for so long and it just feels a bit too soon.
I can see myself sitting right on the edge of the bench wiping down my glass with an antibacterial wipe!
What are other people’s thoughts on this?

Just finished my first shift back in a pub kitchen.
I have never so many meals in a shift.
But please anyone ordering food please know that it will take longer.
I can’t enter the washer uper’s area. So if I need anything from the fridge/freezer he has to get it.
We have 1 designated waitress . She delivers all the food. No condiments on the tables so if the customer then wants something she has to do a whole lap outside the pub to return to the kitchen for individual pots.
We all have walkie talkies now to reduce traffic into the kitchen.
I hated every minute of it 😫

WallsKOL · 04/07/2020 15:16
  • never cooked
B9008 · 04/07/2020 15:28

Just walked past my local with the dog and hardly anyone there.

WallsKOL · 04/07/2020 15:33

@B9008 - I cooked a lot of meals but I have to say the pub itself was a lot quieter than I thought it would be

hashtagbollocks · 04/07/2020 15:38

oh shut up bluebrian

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2020 15:49

There was a small queue at our local pub which does have a fairly big garden.
They are hardy souls willing to have a pint in such conditions!

BlueBrian · 04/07/2020 15:52

@hashtagbollocks

oh shut up bluebrian
Looks like one of the drunks has been chucked out of the pub already.
YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 04/07/2020 16:01

In the pictures that I have seen nationally, the vast majority of people are not wearing masks. The fact that people are inside, speaking for hours to many other people (sharing thousands of droplets while breathing, speaking, coughing etc) simply beggars belief. Should we start the 2 week countdown of increased infection rates from today then ?

UltimateWednesday · 04/07/2020 16:03

I've just walked past what is generally known as a bit of a rough pub in this town. There were small groups of men people sitting at the outdoor tables, chatting quietly.

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2020 16:08

I am currently sat in a pub garden. We are phoning our orders to the bar, hand sanitiser everywhere. It's not the same but it's so normal I could cry.

The80sweregreat · 04/07/2020 16:08

I can imagine the poor staff and kitchen employees will have a nightmare few days.
It might calm down a bit once the novelty wears off.
I feel for anyone working in hospitality just now.

feelingverylazytoday · 04/07/2020 16:11

Just walked past one of our local pub/restaurants, lots of people sitting outdoors at tables, seemed nice and well organised. Actually made me feel happy to see it.
Good luck to all the staff, hope it goes as well as possible.

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 04/07/2020 16:15

@NothingIsWrong

I'm curious if people ( staff, customers) are wearing masks. Are tables / chairs being wiped after each use? How big are the groups? Are most people outside? Are you with friends/ family or both? (Ok, sorry for the millions of questions, just very curious).

googledontknow · 04/07/2020 16:15

I hope it goes well too.
There doesn't seem to be any more risk going to the pub if everyone is SD than there is going to work (I've been going to work the whole tine).
Cases are very low at the moment, I don't plan on going to the pub this weekend, but I hope that those who do have a great time!
I don't want pubs & restaurants to all close but they have no customers.

CarlaH · 04/07/2020 16:19

NothingIsWrong

In what way is hand sanitiser everywhere and ordering your drinks by phone normal?

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2020 16:19

@YankeeinKingArthursCourt no masks, but it's outside only. It's a tiny village local, everyone here is known to everyone else pretty much. We are texting orders to the bar and have a tab to pay at the end. Table service. There are hand sanitiser stations, a board with lists of rules up, all the chairs and tables are wooden, so no soft furnishings and they are wiped down when people leave. I had to leave my name and number (which for me consisted of saying, Oi John I'm here and he wrote my name down).

I'm with friends and husband. Lots of discrete tables but most of us know everyone anyway so lots of cross chat.

I appreciate this isn't the norm. But I'm so happy.

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2020 16:21

It's normal because I'm with people I haven't seen for weeks. And if the papers are to believed, I'd sure as shit better get used to it so thinking of it as normal now will help

Notfeelinggreattoday · 04/07/2020 16:21

@YankeeinKingArthursCourt yes seems to be struct measure off to pub for birthday meal tonight ( ready to be famed by some)
Rules for place im going and same for lot i have seen , no more than 6 , max 2 households , tables distanced , tables etc washed between people , menus washed or throw away etc , table service , staff will be wearing masks , names and numbers taken for track and trace , time limits put in place for how long you can have table
I think a lot are goverment rules but some are additional the pub has put in place , i feel comfortable enough to go but if you dont then understandable as well , you should only do what makes you comfortable
Its certainly not going to the pub as normal

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2020 16:21

Texting and/or phoning - people doing both

NothingIsWrong · 04/07/2020 16:22

We are in a group of 4. Two couples. Three other sets of two couples that we know. But we are well spaced out.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 04/07/2020 16:24

@yankee also be hard to wear a mask while time as how would you eat or drink ? The pub we are going to has said not mandatory but would prefer of we wear a mask walking in and until we are seated and if leaving table for loo i believe , which im happy to do as we will be inside as its raining but it is also booking only and limited numbers

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 04/07/2020 16:29

@NothingIsWrong

Thanks for answering, really appreciate it. I feel like I have a better picture in my mind and it sounds like your pub is really "on it". I hope ( but slightly doubt) this will be the case for other pubs universally ( we'll find out in 2 weeks I suppose).

SueEllenMishke · 04/07/2020 16:34

What a bloody stupid post Bluebrian

If everyone stays away from the pubs we'll be lucky if there any left in business by the end of the year.

I'm looking forward to supporting our locals. One in particular has done loads for the local community during lockdown and they deserve our support.

WallsKOL · 04/07/2020 16:36

Any tables/chairs inside are cleaned after the customers have left.
We have a one way system.
All customers details are taken before entry.
Table service only if you are inside
Most tables inside have been removed
No music
No sport on the TV

First shift was bloody hard work. Just off to start my evening shift

WhereILiveIsWhereIStay · 04/07/2020 16:43

@YankeeinKingArthursCourt

This 'we'll find out in 2 weeks' and 'second wave' has been predicted on MN for Easter, VE day, schools 'reopening', B and Q opening, busy beaches, both May bank holidays, and on and on..

Yes. Let's see..I wouldn't stress though.
