Just wondering if anyone is going to Devon on holiday this summer?

Nope. Actually cancelled our staycation.
Don’t feel safe using the hot tub, do t know who’s been in cottage before us, don’t fancy the crowded beaches, a lot of things still shut etc ... couldn’t see the point.
My Dd and I have underlying health issues so more inclined to be cautious anyway, better of at home.
We’ve not had a terrible lockdown experience, we have a garden, kids pool etc.. so we’re quite fortunate and didn’t feel the change of scenery outweighed the risks for us .

lexloofah · 29/06/2020 16:12

Nope, we have been able to move our self catering cottage booking to next year.

Would love to support the local economy there but not worth the risk to us and the community there. It also seems like too much work for not a completely normal holiday, all the extra cleaning and vigilance when we are out and about, exhausted just thinking about it.

We are all set up at home with garden and games and don't really want to spend every waking minute together after doing just that the last few months.

The80sweregreat · 29/06/2020 16:42

Relatives of mine are going to Devon in August. Two Cottages which are quite isolated apparently. They have family there , so they really wanted to go and planning on eating in / bbq's etc.

Sleepthief · 29/06/2020 16:44

We'll be heading to our second home in Devon when the schools break up. Can't wait!

Out of interest, why do people call a UK holiday a staycation? To me a staycation is when you stay home but go out for day trips. So I'm in London, a staycation would mean going to the museums, the Zoo, the markets, maybe days out further afield like Brighton or Windsor.

I always thought that too!! Glad it's not just me!!

We’re going at the end of July. We just fancy a change of scenery. I’m looking forward to walks along the beach etc. I don’t feel we are really at any more risk than staying in our own town. We don’t have a hot tub, probably won’t eat in restaurants - maybe get the odd take away. We will wear masks when required, and will be driving in our own car, so no public transport. I think it will do our mental health the world of good.

Hugglespuffed · 29/06/2020 17:53

@Spidey66 it means both.

A vacation spent in one's home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.

Dahlietta · 29/06/2020 18:27

I think it's come to mean both, but it originally meant staying at home. I dislike the implication that a holiday in the UK is not a proper holiday. It's pretty much the only kind my children get!!

Figgygal · 29/06/2020 18:31

We are going to Torbay but not until the 20th

It’s an Airbnb we’ve stayed in before 5 minute walk to beach, balcony and sea view, we know the walks, where to shop, takeaways, pubs with outdoor areas that will be open so can reduce contact with others whilst getting a charge of scenery
Probably wouldn’t go if was unfamiliar with the area and had actually said we’d avoid the same area this year but anything is better than nothing

woodhill · 29/06/2020 18:32

Yes we are

Dickorydockwhatthe · 29/06/2020 23:19

This is what I'm dreading 😣. We have the lowest number for the virus so far in Devon and Cornwall so I am dreading the impact of holiday makers all flocking down here. At the same time I realise how much we heavily rely on tourism its bitter sweet 😔

Legoandloldolls · 29/06/2020 23:22

I'm going to Weymouth. Booked it last week. The price and my expectations are low, very low.

Spain was cancelled last week so a week in a shed in the isle of sheppey would look appealing right now

LovingLen · 30/06/2020 06:47

We are stopping off in Devon for a couple of days on the way down to Cornwall to visit elderly DF in a couple of weeks, we are in a touring caravan but are not beach lovers so will just be going for walks mainly. So part holiday and part visiting family

PymChurchBeach · 30/06/2020 07:28

No because I assume it'll be rammed. We are off to the Suffolk coast instead.

Dollywilde · 30/06/2020 07:36

We were in North Devon last weekend - MIL lives alone so we went and bubbled with her. She lives near a lovely seaside town on the Jurassic Coast.

Beach was very quiet but the weather wasn’t fab, we got coffees and fish and chips and sat out but if it were raining I can imagine it’d be a bit miserable. We’ve spent a lot of time there in the past and if it hadn’t been for the temperature I’d say it was more like March than June. It’ll be interesting to see if things change after next week as the atmosphere there felt a bit flat.

actiongirl1978 · 30/06/2020 07:45

We are going g to cornwall with our touring caravan on our seasonal pitch. We have booked tables in our favourite restaurant and pub in advance and will otherwise go body boarding or hang out on the beach with the dog or if its cold my children love nothing more than sitting in the caravan watching tv with the rain banging on the roof.

However we are just going for 2 long weekends before the end of the summer rather than our normal 2 weeks plus weekends.

My parents will be using it when we aren't there so putting some money into the area.

Also just to add our caravan site owner has been nothing but friendly and welcoming and we have emailed her to keep in touch throughout lock down and told her we were happy to pay the full seasonal cost of the pitch so she didnt lose out. I dont think that everyone in holiday areas are dreading the influx.

ceeveebee · 30/06/2020 07:54

We have an air bnb booked in North Devon In August with grandparents too. There is a hot tub - didn’t even think about that being a risk - perhaps we won’t use it for the first 2 days! That’s assuming we will be able to go, the risk of local lockdowns is suddenly very real so who knows whether we’ll be allowed to!

HappyMealWithLegs · 30/06/2020 08:01

No. We had booked to go on 10th July for a week, mainly to see friends and family as we lived there for many years and husband is from there. Not worth it for us though. It isn't a holiday to me if we are queuing for every bar and restaurant.

yearinyearout · 30/06/2020 08:04

Yes we are going next week. Staying in a self catering cottage and will mostly be going walking, can't wait to see the sea.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 30/06/2020 08:06

We are going to the isle of wight on the 14th, we arent planning on going to attractions or doing the stuff we normally would on holiday but we have been isolating at home for 15 wks now, hardly been out and feel it will be good for us to have a change of scenery.

chaoticisatroll55 · 30/06/2020 08:09

Yes in August. It's a luxury tent with its own bathroom and plenty of space. We've already had the virus so you're safer stood next to us than your neighbour probably.

BrieAndChilli · 30/06/2020 08:16

We will probably go and stay with MIL in north Devon at some point and I will go and stay with my sister in Saltash too.

Emmie12345 · 30/06/2020 08:31

Hope nobody from Leicester has booked a holiday !
