Just wondering if anyone is going to Devon on holiday this summer?

Hoping to head to North Devon to spend the summer with my parents 🤞🏽

drayco · 30/06/2020 08:47

I was going last week of August but have rescheduled to next year.

Am going to Wales instead- more remote location, quieter beaches (not that we spend much time on the beach sitting we prefer walking along) -

I know it's not much different than going to Devon but I feel leas stressed about it.

cologne4711 · 30/06/2020 08:53

This is what I'm dreading 😣. We have the lowest number for the virus so far in Devon and Cornwall so I am dreading the impact of holiday makers all flocking down here. At the same time I realise how much we heavily rely on tourism its bitter sweet 😔

For what it's worth, while (according to the Sunday Times) Exeter and Newton Abbot had the least and third least deaths per 100,000 of population, the area I live in had the the tenth least (and is a commuter area for London so had loads of people going backwards and forward until lockdown). We are no more likely to have the virus than you are.

We were in North Devon last weekend - MIL lives alone so we went and bubbled with her. She lives near a lovely seaside town on the Jurassic Coast

Erm...

Ginfordinner · 30/06/2020 09:21

It's a long drive from North Devon to the Jurassic coast.

Dollywilde · 30/06/2020 09:47

@ginfordinner @cologne4711

. Love this place sometimes.

Fine - probably fairer to say East Devon - Sidmouth, which is part of the Jurassic Coast. In my head it's North Devon as you're only just across the border from Somerset. Sorry for the shoddy geography, I hadn't had a tea yet...

Not sure why my poor grasp of the South West is worthy of comment but there you are! You wouldn't know I was born in Torquay... Grin

Dollywilde · 30/06/2020 09:48

Oh also @MiddleClassProblem. A trio of pick ups! Nice one. It's north of Exeter, that's my excuse...

DartmoorChef · 30/06/2020 09:50

Judging by the amount of bookings I'm getting for private chef work at holiday rentals there are a lot of people coming down. It's good news for me as I can finally get back to my job again.

woodhill · 30/06/2020 09:56

We could only go next week as my dh had booked his holiday etc

Desperate to have a break and self catering

MiddleClassProblem · 30/06/2020 10:51

I dunno, if someone said Guildford was in London I would probably have a similar reaction.

It’s a whole different coast line and a huge amount of land in between the coasts. That’s why it was worth a comment.

And at least now you know it’s not in North Devon (which is also district and not a vague compass direction so that’s why people know the specifics).

whydoesitalwaysrainonme82 · 30/06/2020 16:56

I live near Saunton/Croyde. I think there will be lots of visitors coming. As long as they're sensible and dont leave their litter! X

Yes. Planning to walk, paddle if the weather is good and get lovely local meat, fish and beer delivered to support the local economy. We will use our own car and social distance, so I can’t see how we could be a risk to the locals.

woodhill · 30/06/2020 18:25

Won't be leaving any rubbish, hate that attitude

woodhill · 30/06/2020 18:26

I mean litter louts

CodenameVillanelle · 30/06/2020 18:27

I'm going to visit family at the end of July. My parents have a holiday let and they are taking a lot of bookings now for the summer

Batqueen · 30/06/2020 18:30

Yes, going to stay in a hotel for a break and see family at the same time

justdontatme · 30/06/2020 18:32

North Devon is actually a specific reason - we have our very own MP and district council - hence the confusion.

I’ve heard that hotels, cottages etc have had loads of demand.

Justdontatme · 30/06/2020 18:33

Specific region, not reason!

MiddleClassProblem · 30/06/2020 20:33

@whydoesitalwaysrainonme82 you must be not far from my family.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 30/06/2020 22:04

No we rebooked ours . We just wouldn’t enjoy it this year . Even though things are opening back up , I’m still too paranoid .

TooManyDaves250 · 30/06/2020 22:16

We are off to Weymouth too but to see family as we are from near there

Sgtmajormummy · 30/06/2020 22:33

My timeshare in Devon is reopening on 4th July. They have full anti-COVID certification and are advising residents to use supermarket and restaurant home delivery. They NEED to reopen for business and have put all precautions in place.

I always go in April but they used the lockdown closure period for maintenance work. I was happy to accept a replacement week in December this year when I’m confidently looking forward to a family reunion.

And a memorial ceremony for someone we lost to COVID.
