Numbers creeping up - should the government do more to prevent a 2nd wave?

OP posts:
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/06/2020 16:06

Which numbers are these?

LeggyLinda · 26/06/2020 16:14

I wasn’t aware they were creeping up. News and charts I’ve seen show opposite. But I admit I’ve not been following it as closely as others

OP posts:
HairyFloppins · 26/06/2020 16:17

They aren’t creeping up. I think today’s total had quite a lot of backdated data.

SunbathingDragon · 26/06/2020 16:17

People are fed up of the lockdown and the economy needs a gigantic boost.

Sockwomble · 26/06/2020 16:22

Try looking at the actual stats rather using a shit rag for information.

Bol87 · 26/06/2020 16:24

When the link is the Daily Mail, I’ll pass. Show me some actual stats please..

The figures have been trending mostly downward for weeks. They jump up & down a little but the rolling average is going predominantly down..

MRex · 26/06/2020 16:27

A rise of literally 3 deaths is statistically utterly meaningless. It would be case volume that is the first indicator, hospital admissions the most reliable.

hashtagbollocks · 26/06/2020 16:49

numbers aren't going up.
But yeah, let's all stay in and shag the economy even more.
What do you thing the gov. should do OP? ( bearing in mind there is no imminent second wave and cases are down dramatically and we all need to get back to work/ education/ social lives.)

Bakedbrie · 26/06/2020 16:51

It will be interesting to find out once lockdown is fully ended how many poor souls have died in their own homes over the last few months without anyone knowing, missed chemo and died etc. Lockdown is necessary but also has a significant death toll in it’s own right I reckon.

yearinyearout · 26/06/2020 16:52

I look at the figures on nhs England website (I assume they don't include the backdated data just the actual deaths in that 24 hr period) and they are still going down (9 between 24-25 June)

Jrobhatch29 · 26/06/2020 16:58

BBC reported this today

Coronavirus patients in hospital in England are dying at a slower rate now than they were at the peak of the epidemic, analysis suggests.

University of Oxford researchers found the proportion of coronavirus patients dying each day in England fell from 6% to 1.5% between April and June.

Improvements in treatments, changes in the patient population and seasonal effects could all play a role.

The data emerged as the government prepares to ease lockdown restrictions.

Around the height of the outbreak, on 8 April, there were 15,468 people in hospital in England with coronavirus of whom 899 died (6%).

By 21 June there were 2,698 hospitalised coronavirus patients, 30 of whom died (1%), according to the most recent data compiled University of Oxford's Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine.

Always check the BBC for stats. Forget the Daily Fail

feelingverylazytoday · 26/06/2020 20:54

No, I think the government is handling this phase quite well, OP.
Time will tell, of course, but for the moment things seem to be under control.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/06/2020 21:19

The numbers aren't creeping up at all. Hmm

That's not to say they won't in the coming weeks, but it's inaccurate to say they are at the moment.

This has to be sarcasm.

No it isn't sarcasm. Why the fuck would it be?
MummaPI · 26/06/2020 21:33

I think the OP might mean that numbers are going up in regards to this time last week? Yesterday it was 12 more deaths than last Thursday and today was about 18 more. Normally numbers go down as an average so not sure how this affects it.

Pixxie7 · 26/06/2020 23:38

I am not sure what they can do apart from watch and wait. Another lockdown at this stage I think would cause mayhem, people in general are fed up, we are heading for economic disaster.

PickAChew · 26/06/2020 23:40

Those are reported today, not happened today.

EnlightenedOwl · 26/06/2020 23:59

They are not creeping up though are they? To be honest even if they were there is no appetite for another lockdown and I dont think there will be compliance. In addition given the wave of violence and social disorder sweeping the country you could say lockdown is doing more harm than good and normal order needs to be restored fast

BigChocFrenzy · 27/06/2020 01:16

Uk cases and deaths are continuing a gradual downward trend

You need to look at the rolling 7-day averages, to smooth out blips, due usually to data reporting and collation, weekend effects etc

Nobodyputsdaisyinthecorner · 27/06/2020 02:04

Today’s figures were reported today... but that is true of every day and week. So it’s therefore fair to compare and as such we are seeing an uptick in deaths and cases even if you look at the average

I disagree that the government are handling this well.

We’re barely out of level 4, but they’re doing the things their roadmap said they’d do at level 1

Nobodyputsdaisyinthecorner · 27/06/2020 02:06

I get that some people are good news bears who like positive confirmation bias but it’s an outright lie to say this is being handled well or that there hasn’t been a plateauing in the fall followed by this uptick which needs keeping an eye on
