Most pubs not opening on 4th July?

Bramblebear92 · 26/06/2020 12:30

I just had a Google and so far I can't find a single pub in my area (which has tons of pubs) which is opening on 4th of July. Is this likely because pubs haven't been given adaquate notice and is this happening in other places? I'm wondering if restaurants will be the same too actually.

Most seem to be re-opening end of July.

My local is full of self employed tradesmen. I can’t in a million years see them self isolating if they feel perfectly healthy.

MagisCapulus · 26/06/2020 16:54

To be fair to the pubs, there wasnt three weeks notice. Given furlough is three weeks rolling, they may have to wait for staff to come back in and open.

ineedaholidaynow · 26/06/2020 17:08

I would have thought they would be putting names against table numbers, so they would know where everyone was sitting (no propping up the bars at the moment). So if someone at table 1 was ill at a certain time, then they would know who was sitting at table 2 and 3 at the same time.

If people don't co-operate with the test and trace then people are shooting themselves in the foot because many of the lockdown measures that have been eased will be tightened again, so people might not have a job to do anyway as businesses/self employed people will have to stop working.

MrsWombat · 26/06/2020 17:32

The 4th is a Saturday. I'm guessing a lot of pubs will want a softer opening on Monday 6th when people would want a quick lunchtime or after work drink rather than an all-day bender. They might also be opening but just not advertising it in case they get mobbed.

Not quite the same but a local museum is having a soft opening for members only.

Drivingdownthe101 · 26/06/2020 17:50

Most of the ones round here have already had to close their doors permanently due to the covid situation so won’t be reopening at all.

bengalcat · 26/06/2020 17:53

No idea what’s happening with our locals - West London - that said some establishments have been doing takeaway food and drink during lockdown - think I’d give weekend of 4th a wide berth though

Devlesko · 26/06/2020 17:55

I hope they don't open until it's safe, even though they were part of my business which has gone.
cases are up again today, perhaps a result of the protests.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 26/06/2020 18:11

We are equidistant from two pubs

One has views over the sea so its beer garden is very popular as well as the restaurant but it costs a small fortune to get a round in...thats opening on the 19th

The other one thats a bit more of a local pub and a smidge cheaper is opening on the 4th

Livpool · 26/06/2020 18:16

Our local is opening in the 6th

ineedaholidaynow · 26/06/2020 18:20

They will be limited to how many people they can have at a time, so hopefully will reduce the amount of drunken behaviour.

That won't be an issue, it's not how furlough works, as long as you're done 3 weeks you can be called back to work, it's not in blocks of 3 weeks.

There's a range round me, I've seen one opening at 9am another in the middle of the week and another that hasn't decided a date yet. I'd say a combination of getting covid safe, getting supplies and maybe seeing how others get on.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/06/2020 18:57

One of our fairly local pubs is opening on the 4th - booked table for a limited time period only, only table service. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

vanillandhoney · 26/06/2020 19:12

All our locals are opening on the 4th.

cabbageking · 26/06/2020 19:12

Patrons have to register at the local by us.
They have a record of who came on what day. But they have a large outside space and can tape areas off.

The other pubs don't seem to have any known plans as yet.

Gfplux · 26/06/2020 19:38

Why July 4th. It’s a Saturday. There will be a rugby scrum of people.
Why not make it Monday 6th so that it is a gentle opening and the Pubs can get used to keeping their customers safe.

Is this another example of bad organising by Johnson or pressure by millionaire pub owners?

Keepdistance · 26/06/2020 19:56

Maybe their calendar isnt very good - the leaks also said schools would 'reopen' during half term week.

I think it would be good if places booked online so they cant go over their maximum. And you dont really want people pub crawling either

Notcontent · 27/06/2020 00:13

I am in central London and most clothes shops in my local high street have not reopened yet. I am expecting that a lot of pubs and restaurants will not reopen either. I think it’s to do with logistics, profit margins, etc.

Passthebubbly · 27/06/2020 00:36

I am in Scotland and have a small pub. We can reopen on 15th July but I’m staying closed a few more weeks to see how the hell this pans out

Smashedavacado · 27/06/2020 09:51

Lots of local pubs near us opening next Saturday. I'm really not sure how it works safely.
Our nearest pub is a real "local". Early evening there are often groups of (frequently!) men meeting having a pint after work. So if they can't stand at the bar do they all need to occupy single tables that would usually sit 2 or 4 people. Surely if they share tables that goes completely against social distancing?

Derbygerbil · 27/06/2020 09:55

I wondered how the seating and collecting names etc would influence this. Must be difficult to enforce and customers may not be happy.

Yes, some people won’t be happy, but there are big business risks in not complying... If a pub gets known for not bothering, other people may be put off going over fear it’s haven for “rule breakers” that are probably most at risk of having Covid (due to their nonchalance).

Where there is community transmission, it won’t be amongst those that have stuck, or even broadly stuck, to social distancing... it’ll be amongst those that think it’s all a load of bollocks and haven’t adapted their socialising in any way - the very type who’ll be straight down the pubs that are lax with the rules.

If there is then an outbreak related to a pub that hasn’t followed the rules and attracted the “don’t give a shit” lot, it would likely be shut down... not exactly good for business at all!

megletthesecond · 27/06/2020 09:58

Our local pub (60's built, bit grotty) has had a refurb over the last month. The garden area is actually looking pretty good. I would never go there but I think they might do well next month due to their outside space.

Sat 4th is a daft open day though. Heaven help eveyone if it's a hot day.

Derbygerbil · 27/06/2020 10:01

Surely if they share tables that goes completely against social distancing?

They’ll probably just go outside into the pub garden... still not social distancing but lower risk as outside.

ineedaholidaynow · 27/06/2020 10:06

In theory you can sit with one other household in the same way you can have one other household coming to your house, although not sure how SD works at a table. This is if you are indoors. Outside it can be 6 people from other households but again you need to SD.

EnlightenedOwl · 27/06/2020 10:08

I think s lot of people won't bother same as with shops because of all the rules and restrictions and you wouldn't want to be hunted out by tracers just because you'd had a night out

Derbygerbil · 27/06/2020 10:10

@Lemons1571

Pubs aren’t going to be opening up like they were with people mingling around the bar, or they shouldn’t be anyway. Most of most pubs’ business will be food now, not regulars propping up the bar.
