Are the unions going to kick off about back to school in September?

Flippetydip · 23/06/2020 13:20

Is there going to be a big hoo ha from the unions about the "everyone back to school at full capacity" announcement from the PM today?

Any teachers on here care to give a view?

posters who say if they are expected to return to work they will 'go on long term sick

In some threads on here, NHS staff were being ENCOURAGED to go on long term stress leave. Only last week.

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2020 17:15

Vulnerable teachers aren't insisting on WFH. It's in the guidelines.

UmbrellaHat · 23/06/2020 17:22

Given this is all three months away why assume the 1m rule will still prevail? With so few new cases that the vaccine manufacturers can't find enough, unless you are one of the 'a second-wave/is- coming doomongers, likely there wil be no distancing guidance. And for those who say the fewer cases are due to lockdown, just lock down as long as you like on your own dime (no, thought not) and let the children have their lives back.

HipTightOnions · 23/06/2020 17:24

for those who say the fewer cases are due to lockdown

Do you think that the reduction in cases is not due to lockdown, UmbrellaHat?

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2020 17:28

I am sorry , but I can't help myself , given your snide comment about obdurate.

It's doom-monger . Two words also acceptable.

hashtagbollocks · 23/06/2020 17:36

Fripp
just "sigh...." that's all.
Hard work getting people to concentrate on more than one post obviously.
have a relax in the garden, it's sunny again

FrippEnos · 23/06/2020 17:47

hashtagbollocks

sigh all you like doesn't mean that you are right.

Just condescending.

noblegiraffe · 23/06/2020 17:52

Was it the destruction of the 5G masts that saved us?

CarrieBlue · 23/06/2020 17:53

I generally don't intentionally mean to be unkind.

And yet in every thread about teachers you are extremely unkind in almost every post. Nice that teachers are a special case from your general approach.

FrippEnos · 23/06/2020 17:53

noblegiraffe

It was that "can do" attitude that saved us all.

hashtagbollocks · 23/06/2020 17:57

what I don't understand, is the OP was asking if unions were going to kick up a fuss.
Not teachers.
I'm guessing all teachers agree with all union decisions all of the time?
Most other professions acknowledge that unions / other colleagues can make mistakes and also be willing to take advantage of strange circumstances; not teachers from the looks of it.

MarshaBradyo · 23/06/2020 17:58

Unions are teachers aren’t they? In terms of voting for what they want. Not sure of the weighting.

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2020 18:00

I am struggling to think of a time when the national unions didn't try and act in the best interest of their teachers, have to be honest.

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2020 18:01

I genuinely think everyone should watch American Factory to observe what happens when union membership is taken away and then when unions do step up and act (as the teachers do in the film) what an impact that has on whole communities to improve things for many.

galavantingthrulife · 23/06/2020 18:04

The Unions represent us and make sure that we as teachers are safe!!!

Twinklelittlestar1 · 23/06/2020 18:11

It's a goady question and the purpose is to antagonise. Because the actual answer is nobody knows if the union will act, it depends on the governments grand plan and whether it's considered fair and mitigates some of the risk. The fact is the OP knows this already therefore what they seem to be doing is planting a seed that unions may need to step in (rightly bloody so if it's necessary) to make parents turn on education staff with an underlying message of 'don't you dare stand in the way of schools reopening. You and your safety are not important and you need to shut up and get on with it'

The BMA, Equity, RMT, Unison, Fire Brigades Union, GMB, PFA, Royal College of Nursing have all be working to ensure the safety of their workers. The difference has been in how the press/government have reported the teaching unions and sadly, it looks like plenty have fallen for it, as always.

Check out the change in tone in this news article, for instance vs a teaching one at the same time.

Useruseruserusee · 23/06/2020 18:21

Well I’m NAHT (not a Headteacher though). Their advice has been clear and measured and our regional rep has been very supportive as to how we can implement the government guidelines.

We have an NEU rep in school. He raised a few questions about the frequency of toilet cleaning and door handles.

I hope the unions push the DFE to make them agree to pay for the extra funds we are spending on cleaning. At the moment this can only be claimed if there is an outbreak and it’s expensive!

Appuskidu · 23/06/2020 18:33

I think some people really don’t understand how unions work. Teachers ARE the union that they join. They aren’t some random separate leftie body just wanting to rabble-rouse!

Raaaa · 23/06/2020 18:43

If the school don't go back in September it will be bloody ridiculous

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 18:51

‘Vulnerable teachers insisting on working from home’

Ffs🤬this is why the disability act was put in place. I’m debating on whether to report that post😡

FrippEnos · 23/06/2020 19:02

Raaaa

We are over 2 months away from September, we are one to two weeks away from seeing what the results of the protests and beach goers are.

Just about anything could happen between now and September.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 19:08

How will it be ‘bloody ridiculous?’

Should we go back if it’s unsafe? Would that be bloody ridiculous? It would wouldn’t it?

Because you seem to be implying we should all pile back come what may regardless of any danger. Is it not this that is ‘bloody ridiculous?’

Barbie222 · 23/06/2020 19:15

There is unfortunately a lot of bloody ridiculous around at the minute. It's a pandemic. Do you have some better thinking than SAGE in there @Raaaa ? If so let's hear it! I'd love to be able to pop in to Sainsbury's on the way to work, and get a dentists appointment on the horizon. I'd also love for my year 5 child to go back to school, but I'll listen to good advice by people who know better then I do on all of the above.

Kitcat122 · 23/06/2020 19:29

@Barbie222 well said. It's an unprecedented time. No one knows what's going to happen in the next few months. I work in a school and we have a union rep in school. I've heard of no real opposition from the Unions. Its simply been unsafe for too many children to be in school. Hopefully Corona continues to fall and we can all get back to normal. If we can't in September we will just have to deal with it until life goes back to normal.
