That's one location, they can isolate around that using tracking and testing. The headline is nonsense.

Bollss · 20/06/2020 20:04

They fear a second peak? After an outbreak in an abattoir, which sounds like it is now being well managed? Right.

bolderbaking · 20/06/2020 20:14

what a ridiculous. this is a very localised outbreak related to one meat processing plant and the authorities are on the ball.

CatherineCawood · 20/06/2020 20:15

Its not just the abattoir though? It says there have been other local outbreaks linked to family parties, a refugee centre and church services.

I guess as long as they keep local outbreaks local it is OK, guess local lock downs may well become the norm everywhere?

Littlebelina · 20/06/2020 20:16

Pretty much sums up the problem of using the R number in isolation as a way of assessing how a country is handling covid doesn't it?

potatoesofdefiance · 20/06/2020 20:18

Sorry this is nonsense (the second peak thing, R number increase is correct). This is one outbreak in one location, yes ok a bad one which was clearly not picked up very promptly, but they are now on it with track & trace and isolation measures. Local authorities say it has not led to general population spread.

I live in Germany, there is little fear of a second wave at the moment and the R number has only jumped so much because we were down to a few hundred cases a day so this outbreak of 1000+ has a big impact. In fact the Robert Koch Institute (main public health body) has specifically said that the R number has only increased in the affected federal states and they don't expect any general increase in cases (see bottom of page 5). https://www.rki.de/DE/Content/InfAZ/N/NeuartigesCoronavirus/Situationsberichte/2020-06-20-en.pdf??__blob=publicationFile

This is just a sensationalised headline.

Viviennemary · 20/06/2020 20:19

So what. That's Germany's problem. I'm sure it eill be dealt with efficiently.

RightIsRight · 20/06/2020 20:22

If this was Britain it would be the end of the world and Boris would be a murderer but because it’s in Germany, it’s absolutely fine. There’s nothing to see here

PickACoolUserName · 20/06/2020 20:24

The R number is pretty useless when you get to really low levels of infection.

I despair sometimes at the level of maths understanding in this country.

Bol87 · 20/06/2020 20:24

All these outbreaks in meat factories 😱 it’s like world is trying to tell us something.. ha

potatoesofdefiance · 20/06/2020 20:25

There have been small local outbreaks in Germany since lock down was eased, most relating to abattoirs, churches, care homes or large family gatherings. Most are only in the tens of cases, some a hundred or so, this is the first on this scale because the owners clearly took their eye off the ball and didn't spot it quickly enough.

This is the whole point of a good track and trace system, local outbreaks are inevitable but you can stop them spreading to the general population.

Bollss · 20/06/2020 20:25

My opinion would be exactly the same wherever in the world this had happened.

Agreed! Were are stuffed then!!!

What potatoes said.

I'm currently a bit worried at the rise in cases in Berlin, but even there a lot of it is down to an outbreak in a specific large block of flats. (Interestingly, this ourbreak was first spotted when some schoolchildren who lived there tested positive, but they don't seem to have transferred it to any of their classmates - schools are largely back, generally part-time, here)

CatteStreet · 20/06/2020 20:45

*I mean transmitted, not transferred.

pennylane83 · 20/06/2020 20:46

Its only whats happening here with the outbreaks we have had over the last week or so - the meat processing plant etc. No-ones screaming second wave due to that though.

DisobedientHamster · 20/06/2020 20:48

Nothing to see there. It's isolated area. Of course, so many seem to actively want a second wave/peak to prove how we should all be locked up forever never touching anyone.

Keepdistance · 20/06/2020 20:52

Unfortunately i think it's saying the virus transmits better in cold weather or people who are cold are more affected.
Suggest needrouting testing at meat plants.
Maybe they need their sewerage testing.

Havent they got masks on?

If it's a chilled room does it needdefrosting whenever someone tests positive?

Im assuming skiing will be off this year

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/06/2020 20:55

Hello, cattestreet
I actually live near one of the outbrak spots - they have isolated the relevant area: a congregation - probably singing like anything and of course that block of flats is quite near to me, too.

I'll keep on wearing my mask, washing my hands and refrain from cuddling strangers.

CatteStreet · 20/06/2020 21:01

Singing is terrible for spreading it - I say that with great sadness, as a singer.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 20/06/2020 21:01

They used to cover their hair, wear aprons and coveralls, and those heavy gloves - now they will be wearing full head coverings: They look like the shower caps I used to keep my perm dry in the 1970ies.
And the living conditions of a lot of those workers are far from ideal (think fruit pickers). -
I think a major overhaul of meat production is due.

Pussycatinboots · 20/06/2020 21:11

How do they track and trace someone who doesn't have a smart phone?

thedancingbear · 20/06/2020 21:11

The obvious glee in the OP exactly what has people talking about 'dementors'

WTAF, OP? What kick do you get from this?

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2020 21:11

You might want to look at BBC news for the story about the chicken processing plant in anglesey and the outbreak of 75 cases there. The R rate there isn't below 1 thats for sure... (Factory supplies 1/3 of processed chicken products in the UK - it is closed for 2 weeks)

Meat processing plants have been hotspots in the US too. Simply because the factories can not accomodate social distancing properly on the production line.

It doesn't mean there will be a second wave. It does mean that meat processing production lines are not 'covid secure'.
