Precious little social distancing going on in my city

Just been out and about today and noticed that the majority of people seem to have completely abandoned social distancing now.

Obviously shops are restricting entry etc but outside of shops it's quite busy and the vast majority are completely ignoring social distancing. Is it the same in your city?

I'm getting pretty fed up of people recoiling in supermarkets. If you are that scared then please shop online. I'm quite respectful of leaving space around me but some people seem to almost run if there are more than two people in an isle.

annabel85 · 20/06/2020 21:28

@Snog

It surprised me but I guess people don't see why they should do anything that doesn't suit them after Boris said it was absolutely OK for Dom to follow his own personal priorities if the lockdown regulations didn't suit him.
People were congaing like it was all one big party way before the Cummings episode.

They were popping to my local Sainsburys for a newspaper when it was essential shopping only

Many older people are not computer literate. Maybe they considered newspapers 'essential'?

Never mind that there was never actually any requirement that shopping be 'essential only'. That's something MNers made up.

Yeah the Daily Mail is an essential item.
FizzFan · 21/06/2020 00:58

I agree @icedpurple. Newsagents wouldn’t have been allowed to stay open if what they sold wasn’t classed as essential. I remember a post on here where a poster described old people walking to the shops every day for a paper as “selfish cunts”. Quite horrible.

sweetieno · 21/06/2020 01:03

It's the same here. Nobody is wearing masks either. I won't go into a populated area with a mask and large shades, and nitrile gloves. If people don't want to be safe then whatever, but I'm going to try and be as safe as possible.

...even if I do end up looking a bit like Darth Vader at the same time. My mask is a black neoprene one with replaceable filters. I count myself very lucky to have got it just before we first went into lockdown. I've seen washable masks in Asda going for £3.

I think people are generally taking social distancing less seriously. When i went shopping this week there there were people on either sides of aisles and others walking in pairs down the middle of the aisles. It does feel weied because i wouldnt bat an eyelid before lockdown when the panic buying started but now feels weird even though community transmission is probably lower than it was in march.

I saw in the news that jeremy corbyn s brother has been charged with breaking coronavirus regulations for going to some ridiculous 5g protest.

Seems a bit nonsensical since outdoor meeting of more than 6 is increasingly common on my street , thousands of people have been going to blm protests and illegal raves in manchester and other cities with police not enforcing regulations at all.

Casino218 · 21/06/2020 07:17

@walksen yes but he did that when we were still in lockdown. It's a different story a few weeks on as we can meet in groups now.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 21/06/2020 08:52

I went to both Morrisons and Asda yesterday afternoon. Morrisons was an absolute nightmare with lots complaining out loud to companions about the lack of social distancing but not actually speaking to those who were creating havoc. I asked Customer Services to feedback to Management how poorly organised the store is and they were very blase and said this is what it has been like since some restrictions were eased. I told her it was down to Morrisons to make sure the rules were complied with. She did say she would feedbacky issues. I had to leave as it was just a free-for-all.

I then went to Asda who have been brilliant with operating their one way system and tannoy announcements and ......found it had totally gone to pot. People walking around any way they wished, most ignoring social-distancing.

What the heck has suddenly happened to change things so drastically from last week?

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 21/06/2020 09:03

"It's a different story a few weeks on as we can meet in groups now."
Isn't it still meant to be just groups of 6 of mixed households but still maintaining social-distance though (unless you have a larger household than that) or have I missed something?

At least the police are trying to ensure no quarantine raves at Manchester like last weekend.

Yes and there was never actually a requirement for your shopping to be 'essential only', however that be defined.

Some people are going to be really upset when they no longer have the chance to play shopping basket police.

Hell hath no fury like a boomer going without his Daily Mail in the morning.
FizzFan · 21/06/2020 15:31

I don’t know if you know @annabel85 but there are other newspapers than the daily mail available.

IcedPurple · 21/06/2020 15:33

So are some newspapers more 'essential' than others, @annabel85?

If they were buying The Guardian, would that somehow be OK?

My dad is very polite and lovely so you’d have no bother there.

Not sure I’d be quite as nice if you were picking on my dad

Well, it was just a joke. But does anyone actually buy The Guardian?
RufustheRowlingReindeer · 21/06/2020 18:54

Well, it was just a joke

Well thats a relief 😀

Unfortunately you just can’t tell on here

Deelish75 · 21/06/2020 19:25

At the beginning of lockdown I was quite strict with myself and the DC about maintaining 2 metres when we went for our walks. Walking around the park we would stick to the edge of the footpaths or go onto the grass and most people were doing the same. As time has gone on, especially since it's become apparent that transmission is much lower outdoors people (myself included) have been less religious about moving to the side.

I've only been to the supermarket about three or four times since lockdown. First time was right at the beginning and most people seemed really nervous and put a lot of effort into distancing. Sainsbury's were regularly putting out tannoy announcement reminding people that others were waiting and encouraging people to shop as quickly as possible. I went again last week and customers did seem more relaxed in store, friendly almost chatty also noticed more people together of different generations. I don't recall any tannoy announcements and there did seem to be more peopl in the store.
The only "issue" that I had was at the stand for Father's Day cards. Someone came over and leaned across me to pick a card I was stood in front of. I did ask her to back away until I'd finished choosing. TBH I'd have found her rude even if we weren't in the middle of a pandemic.

I'm wondering if the gov will make masks mandatory in shops if they do lower the social distancing.

Snog · 21/06/2020 20:32

There is a big difference here between what happens on a local footpath/nature walk where people are still very much into social distancing, and the area outside the station where it's not being observed much at all.

OP posts:
Molteni · 21/06/2020 21:59

Good enough. Most people make some sort of effort. Regardless I’m not into policing other people’s behaviour. Certainty not at this moment in time. Schools are open, you can go to a restaurant/bar, hell since the 8th of June prostitutes can resume working again.
