Anyone following what’s happening in the United States?

A lesson in how not to reopen.

20 states are seeing significant increases. Some like Arizona, Florida, California and Texas are breaking records of positive cases and covid hospitalizations. ICUs almost full in Texas. Indoor-dining restaurants and bars have been open for a month or so in some of these states. This is still the first wave for them ...

Will be interesting to see if they lock down some states again. It seems inevitable for Arizona (26% of those who had a Coronavirus test today were positive, which is insane).

It is also not accurate to say only two states had outbreaks.
They may have had particularly severe outbreaks but most states with large urban centers were impacted.
This was a significant health issue for the whole of the USA.

endlessginandtonic · 24/06/2020 19:18

Evanston is very almost Chicago. I think all the urban areas are being pretty careful so hopefully your dd should be all good.

FromEden · 24/06/2020 20:42

Just to point out also thay many states are not reporting all their negative tests, so this is skewing the positive test rate upwards. Not saying that certain states aren't in for a rough ride, they are, but maybe not as bad as it appears from the numbers. Huge amounts of testing is being done, so obviously there will be more cases detected.

Newjez · 24/06/2020 23:12

7000 cases in California.

USA could hit a new max of new cases within a week.

Globally we are hitting easily a million cases a week.

This is snowballing.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 24/06/2020 23:21

FromEden The problem is that the percentage of positive tests is increasing. A few weeks ago the testing showed a positive rate of around 6%, now it is 14% so it isn't just increased testing finding cases that previously went missed, the rate of infection has more than doubled.

But not according to trump and pence and those who want to believe them. A week is a long time with this virus. Delays on action will make things exponentially worse. The four worst affected states have a very large proportion of America's people.

With Florida, how is it going to work when the parks open? Won't this just turn Florida into a virus distribution center?

Was just looking through old threads about this and found this one
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3895176-International-travel-to-the-US

British people back in May insisting that they'd be going to Florida this summer and that reopening was going awfully well there.

I wonder if that's still the plan?

The EU is considering a ban on flights from the US. I wonder what the UK will do. People can’t seriously be thinking of flying out to Florida and back with no quarantine...

Newjez I imagine Disney and other parks will be hotbeds of infection. A measles outbreak in California started at Disneyland.

HoldMyLobster · 25/06/2020 00:33

I think it would be very sensible to ban flights from the US for a while.

Plus it would really really piss off Trump.

Precisely why I can’t see Johnson having the guts to do it

There are times you want to suppress the immune system. There are times you don't.

For patients in intensive care with Covid it is often the person’s immune system which is killing them rather than the virus.

I’m not surprised. I belong to a nail tech forum and hardly any of the American techs, that work from home stopped working. I know it’s only one small profession but Still.

Hi everyone. Does anyone have tips on non-mainstream places to buy sanitizing products? Really in search of Hydrogen Peroxide and Purell-like Hand Wipes.

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/06/2020 11:28

Things are looking really bad in the USA.

38,000 New cases in 24 hours, highest increase ever. ICUs getting overwhelmed in Texas. Secret Service agents who have been involved in looking after Trump have tested positive. My prediction is Trump gets it and dies before the election.

JacobReesMogadishu · 25/06/2020 11:29

Interestingly looking at Texas it looks like it takes 2 months from easing/removing restrictions to being overwhelmed.

flack · 25/06/2020 11:35

DT is a slimy character & germaphobe, he'll dodge this one like he always has legal repercussions for his many many many dodgy dealings. Whatever else you say against him, BoJo genuinely likes people so he interacts with them as individuals that put him at risk. DT sees people as opportunities to be exploited. Different interaction style.

Trump and Biden hopefully. I mean, what a choice? Couldn't they find someone who wasn't a sex offender? Jeez.

Much as I hope trump gets it, the resulting meltdown would be unbelievable. Pence wouldn't be able to take over, and i imagine that weasel krushner would take over. Christ, wouldn't that be a shit show.

It's not looking good I'm afraid.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 25/06/2020 17:48

Newjez It goes Trump - Pence - Nancy Pelosi - Pompeo - Chuck Grassley in the chain of succession for US President.

Kushner doesn't get a look in. I doubt anyone in either political camp rates Javanka very highly apart from Trump so I think they are gone when he goes. The problem is Ivanka coming back to run in 2024.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 25/06/2020 17:49

Here is proof that some people in the US have the ability to hold down jobs, drive cars, own homes all while functioning at the common sense level of a wombat.

Masks are the devil's work

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 25/06/2020 17:54

It really depends where you are. The state I live in has been careful and everyone's still socially distancing and wearing masks. Our numbers continue to decline.
We're definitely staying put this summer, though, I can't believe how daft some people are being.

I know that is the way it's supposed to go.

But I can't see the republicans submitting to the democrats.

I can see krushner ruling with pence as a puppet, especially if trump is just ill and not dead.

It would be a messy situation.

It’s really interesting to hear perspectives from different states. Thanks for sharing.

Texas still allowing bars, bowling alleys and restaurants to operate:

Texas Medical Centre (Houston) has officially reached 100% ICU capacity. It’s now onto surge capacity, but it’s expected to hit capacity there too in 12 days.

It's just amazing that they know how to stop this from happening, yet are choosing to let it happen.
