Is your year 2/3/4/5 primary school child going back before the summer?

My dd is in year 2 and we were told last week that no other years could go back as there wasn’t enough classrooms available, no surprise there. Today we’ve been told that she can go back for 2 days for ‘transition’ days with her new teacher and half her new class. To enable this they are closing 2 weeks early for the other years that are back already (year 1 etc) so that the non returning years can go back for 2 day’s each.

Just interested what other schools are doing? It seems it’s been left to schools to decide what to do now.

State school. Head keen to get everyone back for 'something' before the holidays and is letting us know today.

We've had surveys asking how many are going back and what we think of the provision and comms so far. They're trying their best I think.

foamrolling · 17/06/2020 08:01

Yes. We're in Wales so all kids are going back part time. I'm not sure what that will look like for mine yet though, all they've said is it will likely be half days but I don't know how many.

Namechangex10000 · 17/06/2020 08:06

My year 4 is going back full time from Monday!!

happypotamus · 17/06/2020 08:28

No. Mine is going as a keyworker child 2 or 3 days each week depending on what shifts I work, but, otherwise, year 4 will not go back this summer. My other DC is in Reception, her class is going back for the first time today and they will only do one day a week for the next few weeks until the end of term.

HeadSpin5 · 17/06/2020 14:54

Ours has taken back the KW, plus those in R,1 amd 6 that wanted to so far. They’ve now said they can take Y5 and have asked those parents to confirm numbers ASAP so can look at potential provision for other years. As mine is in one of the other years I’m v much hoping there’s a chance to get some classroom time, even if it’s just a few sessions to see teacher and transition to next year. Already assuming it won’t be full time til Sep at the earliest (and keeping everything crossed for them!).

justdontatme · 17/06/2020 14:58

Nothing for my Y3.

Apparently the head would love to get all the kids in but is following the rules, whatever that means! I wish they were bringing everyone in part time.

UntamedShrew · 17/06/2020 15:38

Everyone is getting a couple of weeks before the holiday, on some sort of rotation. The head and teachers have worked so hard to make it fair for all and safe of course, and I sense with very little (no) help.

VicBen · 17/06/2020 15:55

@Eccle80

We’ve been told no to years 2, 3 and 4. Really sad for my year 4 who is leaving his first school, and getting no transition to middle school either
We're in the 3 tier system here too and feel totally forgotten about. My year 4 daughter will be going to middle school in September with no chance to say goodbye to her first school and have a transition to her new school. Only Reception and Year 1 are going back, it seems so unfair.
Baboutheocelot · 17/06/2020 16:02

We had a letter from the local authority which said that other years were not expected to go back before the summer holidays. It also said that they are uncertain about how the children will return in September. We are in Cambridgeshire.

oldwhyno · 17/06/2020 16:12

the guidelines are ambiguous and some schools are choosing to implement them in such a way as to effectively limit capacity to ~50% of what they could achieve in some cases.

Mumratheevergiving · 17/06/2020 16:31

Ditto - it’s a lottery. The Gov have created a total mess around reopening schools.Lots of very pissed off parents homeschooling and frazzled teachers in the electorate. They had better have a plan that runs like clockwork in September & a better back up plan ready.

Where is the information about that please?

Eccle80 · 17/06/2020 16:58

@VicBen yes it is such a shame they couldn’t have given schools discretion from the start to decide year groups or offer them a couple of weeks each

Rainyrain · 17/06/2020 20:55

My yr 2 can go on Monday for two full days a week. Reception, yr 1 and yr 6 have been back for two weeks now. Yr 2 and yr 5 next week, yr 3 and yr 4 will be added in for the last two weeks of term. Everybody (apart from keyworker /vulnerable) is only being offered two days a week, nobody (apart from keyworker/vulnerable) will be in on Wednesdays to allow the school to be deep cleaned every weds and at weekends.

Yurona · 17/06/2020 20:56

Yes, the whole (primary) school is back. Independent school.

Yurona · 17/06/2020 20:58

Sorry forgot: all years are back full time

loulouljh · 17/06/2020 21:00

I have a year 3. I don't think she is going back. No communication from the school so we can only assume not!!!! Even part-time would have been welcome..

trilbydoll · 17/06/2020 21:02

Y2 dd is at infant school and moving to junior school in Sept. I am hoping/expecting to hear something about transition before the end of term but nothing yet.

The junior school is 5 form entry so they have plenty of space even with Y6 in to do something for the incoming Y2s.

minipie · 17/06/2020 21:07

Yurona how are they managing that? Are the classes really small ie

minipie · 17/06/2020 21:07

Independent school here and y2-4 get nothing except a half day or maybe one day after the end of term.

cabbageking · 17/06/2020 21:08

Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 won't be back.
Year 6 has just started back for 2 days a week. This wasn't the plan but as only 16 indicated they would return we can take two groups of 8 now.

Paddingtonthebear · 17/06/2020 21:12

Yes my Y2 is going back for a full week at the end of term, it’s a Y2 leavers week organised by the HT and school will he closed to the other year groups YR and Y1

anotherexclusion · 17/06/2020 21:15

Categorically told our school is at capacity with just KW and y6 children so not a hope in hell of yrs 3-5 going back. They're too busy preparing half a dozen downloaded from the internet worksheets per year, youtube videos from staff about how much they miss the children and verbose letters blaming the government for their situation to actually work on getting children back.

naturalbaby · 17/06/2020 21:15

DC in year 4 gets 2 days in July to make up for no sports day and prize day, it’s a sort of end of year celebration so I don’t think there will be any lessons or teaching.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/06/2020 23:03

Combined primary so the capacity (rooms & staff) is fully taken up with yN, yR, y1, y6 and KWs. I can't see how they can fit anyone else in (I have a y2 and y4 and would happily send them back immediately) I bumped into a teacher this evening and she said they're full.

It's frustrating when the y1 and yR bubbles are half empty and mine can't be accommodated.
