Is your year 2/3/4/5 primary school child going back before the summer?

My dd is in year 2 and we were told last week that no other years could go back as there wasn’t enough classrooms available, no surprise there. Today we’ve been told that she can go back for 2 days for ‘transition’ days with her new teacher and half her new class. To enable this they are closing 2 weeks early for the other years that are back already (year 1 etc) so that the non returning years can go back for 2 day’s each.

Just interested what other schools are doing? It seems it’s been left to schools to decide what to do now.

Been told no space for years 2-5. They've had to lower the number of spaces available in Yr 1 to 45 (3 bubbles instead of 4) due to more KW children needing spaces.

Would have been a lot better for more children if there had been a rota originally instead of 3 year groups in full time.

Appuskidu · 16/06/2020 17:46

Nope-we haven’t even got enough staff to have all the priority year groups back.

hippospot · 16/06/2020 17:47

Yes.

Half classes in the morning and half in the afternoon, ie maximum bubble of 15 children but in reality there are fewer than that attending. Parents can decide if they want to let their child attend or not. DS is so happy to be back albeit part-time. They work well in a smaller group too so cover a lot.

I had no hesitation at all about him going back. Community transmission is very low in my region.

BlusteryLake · 16/06/2020 17:48

No, only R, 1 and 6 in our school.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/06/2020 17:50

@FourTeaFallOut the modelling we are using at work. Think imperial college? I am the planning and implementation end though so haven't studied it in detail but that is what we are assuming for our planning now

TimeWastingButFun · 16/06/2020 17:51

No ours (Y5) won't be back till September earliest. But I thought Boris said the other day that the other years (ie not R, 1 & 6) wouldn't be back till September? Has that changed then, I can't keep up!!

ohthegoats · 16/06/2020 17:54

It's all up to individual school.

Looneytune253 · 16/06/2020 17:54

My dd is year 5 and they just emailed yesterday to say that once the rest of the children have settled in y5 is next. They've also asked about zoom style sessions to introduce the children to their next teacher

Dancingalong · 16/06/2020 17:55

Our school have nursery, R, year 1 and year 6 back already and year 5 going back next week. Each year is split into two bubbles attending 2 days per week. They also have two key worker groups. We had an email today to say the other years ago wouldn’t go back now until September.

LeSquigh · 16/06/2020 18:01

Yes! Finally! Mine is going back - the school are opening fully, all years, they have room - classes are being split into half into bubbles of 15 but other than at pretty much normal.

Adelais · 16/06/2020 18:08

So it sounds like some are going back and some aren’t at all. I personally think they should have had all years back part time from June rather that just reception, year 1 and year 6.
It seems unfair that some kids get nothing at all until September at the earliest.

No, and given that school is moving heaven and earth to discourage key worker children and R, Y1 and Y6 from attending, I’m not expecting them to.

wendz86 · 16/06/2020 18:16

Year 2 and 5 Going back Monday (2 days a week) . They are hoping to get year 3 and 4 in before summer , guessing will only be 2 weeks at 2 days a week but better than nothing .

Boredsillyathome · 16/06/2020 19:29

My DD is in year 3 and won't be back still September at the earliest they are talking about using local community centres for classes, god knows what's going to happen!

FourTeaFallOut · 16/06/2020 20:09

Thanks Nevertwerknaked. God - I hope they're wrong. I don't know whether to plunge my head back in the sand or take a look now.

I agree too, they talked about “national parity” as the reason for year 6 going back even where it wasn’t a transition year. But there is no parity at all in which years have gone back, just luck based on what your school can offer. At the very least all children in transition years should have been able to go back for at least a few days
Qasd · 16/06/2020 20:44

No not even bothering with the years they are supposed to and no online learning guessing they will do nothing until someone says they have to!

Interesting how long we will let schools like ours do nothing but I am hoping that national policy in September will require schools to provide an education since I assume the per pupil funding will still be distributed to schools and seems unfair to pay schools to teach children when schools actively say they are not going to (whether in line or in person)

Lucindainthesky · 16/06/2020 20:49

DD is y4 and there is no word on years 2-5 atm.

Her teacher told me that between keyworker children and the approx 30% of foundation, y1 and y6 that are back, the school is full!

So looks like it'll be sep at the earliest and if current social distancing rules apply I have no idea how it will be managed.

MrsJonesAndMe · 16/06/2020 21:02

No chance! They told us when the YR & 1 started back that there's no room for any other years.

To be fair on them, there are 5 classrooms which is normally R-4, so having to split R and 1 into 2 groups and a keyworker classroom = school full!

MissCowell · 16/06/2020 21:04

No. My year 1 dc hasn't even gone back. We have been told there is no space

Notso · 16/06/2020 21:22

We're in Wales, my kids primary have offered 4 days to all years.

cantkeepawayforever · 16/06/2020 21:27

No, except for a transition day at the end of term.

Over 50% of pupils have at least 1 keyworker parent or are vulnerable, so in theory if all take up their places, even the priority year group bubbles have to close.

We're close to the priority year group bubbles going down from 4 days to 2 - hanging on, just, as the keyworker children numbers swell dramatically week by week.

Angel2702 · 16/06/2020 22:47

Years 2 and 5 are all going back two days a week. Years 2 and 3 30 children out of 120 going back two days a week.

thickgit · 17/06/2020 00:00

All years back full time, but Independent

BunsyGirl · 17/06/2020 07:10

Year 5 back last week. Year 2 tomorrow. Full time for both. Independent school.
