Will we have to wear masks at the hairdressers?

Or will just the hairdressers be wearing them? Wondering if I should buy a mask for this reason.

I think it would be polite to! If you plan on getting a bus or train anywhere any time soon you’ll need one anyway - can’t hurt to have one.

My hairdresser called me to make an appointment for after they reopen. They said they will supply at cost a PPE kit when I arrive. They didn't specify what was in it, but I imagine a disposable mask, gown and gloves? If I don't agree, then no appointment. I love my hairdresser and am counting the days to going back so it is fine with me.

Blackdoggotmytonguestill · 15/06/2020 20:07

Yes. Both client and hairdresser wear masks. Client adjusts straps as requested to enable cutting.

noego · 15/06/2020 20:11

Ask Vicky Young of the BBC she's obviously had hers done this weekend. Not that these journo's and politicians are breaking and lockdown rules. (YEAH)

HeIenaDove · 15/06/2020 20:15

@noego Ive noticed this too. There is no way they are getting shine like that from a box dye.

VerbenaGirl · 15/06/2020 20:18

My hairdresser has advised that she will be wearing a medical grade face mask and will give clients a basic face mask when they arrive.

noego · 15/06/2020 20:19

Yvette Cooper was interviewed today. She's had hers cut and she was the one banging on about DC breaking rules and quoting a poll from MN at the liaison committee

I’ve got an appointment for 5th July but when I booked last week they said they still weren’t sure what the rules were going to be and whether they’d be allowed to do anything more than a cut.
I’m not sure I’ll bother if they can’t do any colour, I don’t think a cut will do much to help my 2 inch roots!

My hairdresser phoned me a couple of weeks ago. She said that she will only be seeing household members together, no other customers allowed. she will wear full ppe, and expects customers to wear face masks and gloves. And she won't be doing blow days as she's been told that may blow the virus around.

Sounds fine to me

BigChocFrenzy · 15/06/2020 20:40

I'm in Germany and had to wear a facemask when I went to the hairdresser a few weeks ago
I had to wash hands thoroughly first as well

I had a trim and some of the cut hairs got under the mask, v itchy, but it was worth it to finally get rid of the lockdown wild mane

HeddaGarbled · 15/06/2020 20:41

I’ve managed to get a provisional appointment for mid July. I have to wear my own mask and gloves and will have my temperature taken before being allowed in, I can’t go in before the time of my appointment, there will be separate “cubicles” for each customer, no refreshments or magazines but I can have a blow dry.

Jrobhatch29 · 15/06/2020 20:44

My sons barbers have posted on their facebook page that masks will be compulsory. Optional for children

Scottishgirl85 · 15/06/2020 20:46

Yes, I have appointment in early July and mask will be compulsory.

Floatyboat · 15/06/2020 20:47

You should get a mask for lots of reasons. Not just so you can have a hair cut.

notheragain4 · 15/06/2020 20:48

My hairdresser is asking us to wear one (and she will too)

TerrapinStation · 15/06/2020 20:50

Unless and until the government make a pronouncement on the issue I'd suggest asking your hairdresser is the only way to find out.

m00rfarm · 15/06/2020 20:50

In Portugal we’ve had hairdressers open since May. Clients wear face masks, are temperature checked on arrival, have hand gel supplied, have our phones disinfected and bags etc locked away. Towels and gowns are one time use anyway. Only three clients at a time in 100 square metres.

m00rfarm · 15/06/2020 20:51

Oh. We had to remove rings, bracelets, earrings etc.

HeIenaDove · 15/06/2020 20:51

How will that compulsion work for those with asthma.

PseudoBadger · 15/06/2020 20:51

The guidance isn't published. But I understand that the customer won't wear a mask and the hairdresser wears a visor.

PilatesPeach · 15/06/2020 20:53

My hairdresser has said they will be wearing one and will be supply one of a certain grade for £1 on top of the charge - you cannot wear you own. I just have a wet cut so wasn't bothered about blow dries however, having cut my own last month after watching some Youtube tutorials, I am not in a hurry really for an appointment.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/06/2020 21:08

We had to remove rings, bracelets, earrings etc.

Why on earth would you have to remove rings and bracelets? That seems like overkill.

I'm resigned to no hair cut and colouring my own hair until I've got used to a mask which at the rate it's going will be never!

Pluckedpencil · 15/06/2020 21:25

Here in Italy they provided a kit (you pay a small sum for it but can use again) with a disposable kimono and mask. It was no big deal and was lovely to go and have a natter with them again. It's just a mask, no big deal.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/06/2020 21:26

It's just a mask, no big deal.

It is to some people, me included. I feel as though I'm suffocating if anything is over my face.

Lavenderpurple · 15/06/2020 21:32

I’ve got a few friends who are hairdressers, no mask, no appointment.
I’m a beauty therapist and I’m telling clients as they’re starting to rebook that they need to wear a mask as will I.
I want us both to be safe and I’m also pregnant so will be wearing other ppe.
