Is today essentially the end of lockdown?

Just that really. I can't help feeling with non essential shops now open, schools beggining to go back, Gatwick opening the second terminal and more people back at work, and the likely slashing of the 2 metre rule down to one ( which essentially means no touching really), that this is essentially the end of lockdown. Of course everyone still needs to be sensible and "stay alert". But will I finnaly be able to take my kids to spend their birthday money at the toyshop without being judged to high heaven?

I personally feel that coronaviruses will start slowly becoming less talked about on the news etc... Already not doing weekend news conferences, I fully expect at the end of the month it will go down to once a week news conferences instead.

The only things really to still not be back are, holidays, pubs/resteraunts mass gatherings and social distancing which I can see holidays and pubs being allowed in July, sporting matches maybe back by September and if no second wave "compulsory social distancing" ( I get that people will still want to voluntarily do it) gone by Christmas.

Of course it's not 'the end' , seeing as so many things are still shut.
We'te in the 'gradually opening up' phase.

Lovelydovey · 15/06/2020 10:32

Nothing will feel like normal to me until the children are back at school (full time) and public transport resumes a normal service. Both feel a long way off to me.

Reedwarbler · 15/06/2020 10:33

Doesn't seem over to me. We can't go on holiday, I can't visit a lot of my family, go to the pub etc. I cant do my exercise classes, visit the dentist and so on. It looks like having to wear a mask will become more widespread, which is uncomfortable, so no, it's not over. I want my real life back. Fed up with this shit.

VictoriaBun · 15/06/2020 10:38

I read on another post - ' We are not at the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning '
Seemed sensible to me .

iVampire · 15/06/2020 10:42

It’s not the end of your shielded

Even though we were told 2 weeks ago it was OK to go out for daily exercise at minimum 2m social distancing. Now that everyone thinks 1m is OK, the chances of us being able to even do that safely have just been slashed

Which is really shit

ItsInTheShed · 15/06/2020 10:45

its far from over

the fallout will take years to recover from.....and schools seem to be struggling with what to do

i thought it was soon to be mandatory to wear masks in shops too

ItsInTheShed · 15/06/2020 10:47

and i dont think the tourism industry will ever recover....hotels in resorts abroad and here will be finished, as small businesses dont reopen

and i think a large percentage of pubs will be gone too

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 15/06/2020 10:47

How is it essentially the end of lockdown just because the shops have re-opened?
DS1 and 2 still not at school (secondary) and won't be until September (I assume)
We still aren't to meet up in groups over 6 despite what other eejits are doing. (If they jumped off a cliff, would you)
Elderly grandparents still can't go out/have people round.
Still sticking to the rules here but might venture out into town later (walking and social distancing) and see what it's like.
Hopefully not too busy

WhatIsTheActualPointOfMe · 15/06/2020 10:48

I have had my dental checkup cancelled, but they said to ring if I develop any problems, they are doing emergency appointments.

My B12 injection is still cancelled, but thats ok, I bought a syringe off the internet and watched some Youtube videos and gave it to myself as I had some vials from my prescription in the house. I will give myself the other one when it is due.

I am in the vulnerable group so am not going out anywhere and I do not work. I do have to have a plumber in the house this week so will be making sure to stay 2m away and if he isnt wearing PPE, I am not opening the door!

We are going to try to live in lockdown like this until there is a vaccine.

annabel85 · 15/06/2020 10:50

From now on, the economy needs to be prioritised.

Let businesses open properly but with a ban kept on mass gatherings.

helpfulperson · 15/06/2020 10:52

I read on another post - ' We are not at the beginning of the end but the end of the beginning

This is true. China, Israel and Iran are seeing spikes.

Forgone90 · 15/06/2020 10:57

Sorry forgot how miserable and pessimistic the majority of you on here were... Well I'm going to take my daughter to the toy shop and have some fish and chips on the sea front, knowing I am likely to be made redundant soon.. If I can see a positive in today then surely most of you lot can... Have a nice weekend all

Some people think covid19 was a joke or a conspiracy and just want to get back to normal. I'm currently watching the situation in Beijing, whatever happens there, could be what's in the cards for us.

I know we have to be out spending cash for the sake of the economy, but we're still on Level 4 aren't we? Or did Chris Whittey agree to lower it in the end?

blackpeonies · 15/06/2020 10:58

No ! The virus is still active in England. This country is massively a tertiary sector and most of the leading companies are, very sensibly, encouraging massive WFH. Unions and teachers in the public sector are still vigorously blocking zoom school (crazy) so in consequence English secondary school students are going 6 months without schooling. There seems to be extensive efforts to find innovative "blending learning" programmes, when actually you need to merely carry on ordinary schooling (teachers alone in classroom if needed like premier league football) and stream the classes.

I am astonished to see a NHS clinician above saying mask wearing is useless. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/facemasks-shown-to-cut-spread-of-covid-19-9r92zfpb8 The research was able to use the staggered introduction of masks in shops and public transport across Germany as a natural experiment to test how effective they were. By looking at new cases in the days that followed, the researchers concluded that there is “strong and convincing statistical support” that the masks “strongly reduced the number of incidences”. Just look at covid death stats for Hong Kong, Japan, S Korea and Vietnam. If doctors here still think they are useless then we are in a bad way.

So all in all, no, it is not just end of lockdown and back to normal. I think this vicious virus has shown up England as an absolute shambles in myriad ways. I think there is massive unemployment to come - not caused by lockdown (look at the Asian lockdown countries, they are doing fine) but caused by the virus and England's man mishandling.

I trust there will be memorials and a memorial service for all the dead, like after the world wars, and in particular because so many families could not properly grieve at funerals.

HelloMissus · 15/06/2020 11:01

It’s not the end.
I can’t attend a funeral this week due to restrictions.
My foster kids school is only open part time.
And my entire industry is still shit down.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 15/06/2020 11:01

Have a nice weekend all
Has the fact that it is Monday morning escaped you OP?

ItsInTheShed · 15/06/2020 11:01

bit touchy aren't you op? and 'have a nice weekend'?

its monday!!

sorry we can't all be raving about going to a bloody toyshop with the kids!

AhGoGo · 15/06/2020 11:02

@Forgone90

It’s not pessimistic it’s truthful. Maybe this is your normal returning but for many it’s a long way off.

ItsInTheShed · 15/06/2020 11:06

its hilarious on social media (and this post) today!

all the mummy bloggers seem to think its allll about them and the shops reopening means the seriousness of this is now over. so short sighted and immature

one is bleating on about disney not reopening yet and how its akin to child abuse!

Mittens030869 · 15/06/2020 11:17

So yes, I do think the idiotic side of the public will perceive lockdown as being over.

^This. There were raves in Manchester on Saturday night.

For me and my family, it definitely isn't over, especially since I'm ill with long-term COVID-19, my DH is still WFH and my DDs aren't back at school full-time. And playgrounds aren't open yet.

Trainersmum · 15/06/2020 11:19

Not for us. Dc still off school. Playgrounds still closed.

A trip to the shops is no use for us.

ItsInTheShed · 15/06/2020 11:20

manic consumerism by the look of the news

huge queues.....we've learnt nothing

Lucindainthesky · 15/06/2020 11:22

Well, I am still homeschooling DD and have no idea when she will be going back to school or in what capacity.

I'm still furloughed and working in theatre so no idea if or when we will reopen and if I'll still have a job.

DH still working from home.

But the toyshop is open!!! Yes, it's over!!! Yay!!!

Jaxhog · 15/06/2020 11:25

No.

Sadly, a lot of people think it is over and will stop socially distancing, washing hands frequently, and taking care generally. So we can look forward to a second spike and a load more deaths.

TotorosFurryBehind · 15/06/2020 11:25

No...do you even have children and if not why are you posting this on a forum for mums?

I'm not trying to be rude. But like many other parents I am frustrated and at the end of my tether juggling childcare and working from home. And in the free time we do have we are severely limited in what we can do with our toddler because playgrounds, zoos, mum and toddler groups etc are all still closed 😡
