Open the public toilets!

blackpeonies · 13/06/2020 22:13

Other countries have got their public toilets open.

It is discriminatory and unhygenic and 18th century to not have public toilets open.

I feel particularly sorry for children.

Cleaners are presumably key workers. They could be closed at intervals say for 15 mins to allow cleaners to work, social distancing.

We’ll have clothes shops open but no public toilets?!? for example in the royal parks in london.

One of many examples of closed toilets

Open the public toilets!

How do we do this germ free ? I am imagining flash wipes galore , gloves ... help me out here.

HermioneWeasley · 13/06/2020 22:16

Agree, it’s disgraceful

Just wash you hands at the end

blackpeonies · 13/06/2020 22:18

Yes, you’d have to be prepared - masks and anti bac wipes, hand gel.

But not really more hassle than changer bags which we know so well from babies.

Having them still shut is making getting out and about disproportionately difficult for anyone who doesn't have a bladder of steel, for any reason, including people with disabilities.

They are no more unhygienic than they were pre-COVID19. Just don't lick the seat and wash your hands before you leave.

The irony being that, with toilets shut, we can't do that hand washing we're supposed to be doing.

blackpeonies · 13/06/2020 22:25

many children in cities, for example in london, have followed the guidelines and have stayed home for the past 12 weeks. With masks on and social distancing, it is now necessary to go to parks and see nature, generally to get fresh air.

Toilets being closed is unforgivable - has it just been forgotten and left off the to do list? It is particularly grating to be told passive-aggressively on the Park signs to ‘take one’s own precautions’ Hmm. Well, try having a 2 year old or a period or 100 other reasons.

Use a face covering when inside the toilet, and then wash hands after? If you have to touch the handle make sure to use hand gel after?

Cupcakegirl13 · 13/06/2020 22:27

They’re open around where we are in some places

ACautionaryTale · 13/06/2020 22:36

Or how about if you want to avoid them do but open them and allow people to use them if they choose

If cleaners have Ppe they can be cleaned hygenically.

Everyone else has a bloody choice whether to use or not

Ladybird89 · 13/06/2020 23:52

I’m sure it’s against human rights. I’ve had to go in a bush several times when oit lately.

bubbleup · 13/06/2020 23:54

The guidelines in London weren't to not get fresh air Confused

AnotherEmma · 13/06/2020 23:54

YANBU, it's appalling.

KindKylie · 13/06/2020 23:55

It makes no sense at all.

Locally to us lots of parks and beauty spots are open and acceotingbvisiors - charging for parking for eg, but keeping the toilets closed. If you're expecting and hosting people, you should open the facilities!

0blio · 13/06/2020 23:58

I absolutely agree it's a disgrace not to have toilets open. It only takes seconds to wipe around a toilet seat, handle and door lock. What's wrong with providing sanitiser so users can do it themselves before they use the loo?
I won't be going very far until public toilets open again.

blackpeonies · 14/06/2020 06:32

@bubble - if you are genuine - you are being disingenuous. Those who followed the guidelines went our for an hour and otherwise stayed home. For many in London that means in flats. For little children that means nor much fresh air. Anyway the point of this thread is not your thing but the question when will public toilets fully open as it’s disgusting otherwise.

vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 06:38

Our local ones have been open for about a month now.

Totally agree toilets should be open and it's something that disproportionately impacts women, children and those with disabilities. It's disgusting that councils have been allowed to close basic facilities like this.

whatayearitis · 14/06/2020 06:45

This happens in Nz it was very annoying!
We have signs on how to wash our hands,Hmm
Funny enough after washing you touch the tap to turn it off so I leave it runny and use a paper towel to turn that off.
1month 1 week later I am covid free.
General common sense washing and use that paper towel to open the door to leave.
It is local government and governments lack of organising or hesitation here that caused this delay, calling on the already working cleaners seemed odd!

YouSetTheTone · 14/06/2020 06:50

It feels like we’re all going to be fighting to get a standard of essential services back after this. The excuse is going to be ‘oh but covid.. is why x/ y/ z’ has been closed/ cut services/ poorly maintained.
Public loos, dentists, education.. none of those things needed to be thrown under a bus as much as they have after the immediate lock down period IMO.

Submariner · 14/06/2020 06:54

Can I ask that anyone who is finding the lack of toilets degrading and limiting now also lend your voices to the Changing Places campaign? For many people who cannot use a standard disabled toilet this choice between going home early or wetting oneself/getting changed on a toilet floor happens year in year out. www.changing-places.org/

Completely agree.
jsemstresser · 14/06/2020 07:05

I agree they need to open them up and waste disposal sites some of them are still closed around our way.
Disgusting considering amount of council tax that's paid

Reedwarbler · 14/06/2020 07:09

Ther was no government directive to close public loos on lockdown as far as I'm aware, but our local council closed all the public ones (not that there's many!) and I think it was largely a money saving exercise, in the same way that they stopped cutting the grass verges and other grass in other communal areas. I think some councils were delighted they could shut or stop these services and save themselves some money.
I am yet another of these people who has a map of available loos in her head because I need to pee so often, like at least hourly. I find going out at the moment very difficult.

covidmonkey · 14/06/2020 07:21

We went to a little hike and for our surprise the toilets by the car park were open.

CarlaH · 14/06/2020 08:31

I really don't understand why some toilets are closed and others open.

Surely the risks are the same everywhere.
