  • All those local farms and markets and indies (who home delivered)
  • Andrew Lloyd Webber (show must go on)
  • All NHS frontline, risking their own lives
  • Jamie Oliver (keep cooking)
  • Chris Packham (springwatch live)
  • All the 3d home or lab printers (who made shields)
  • mumsnet (who kept us chatting)
  • world wide web (needed for mumsnet & 1 million other things!)
  • all the volunteers (who set up local village & community supports)
  • Saferstreets and Medecin sans frontier (homes for homeless)
  • M&S (food boxes)

what else?

Me, you and us.
We’re all still here.

Adding praise for pharmacists!
Post office for delivering at least some of our mail.
All the local groups who got together and organised mask-making for the déconfinement.
Lovely friend who sent me a soft fabric mask like her own after the medical ones ripped my face to shreds.
Wonderful doctors' secretaries where I live who must be so bored with writing medical attestations so people can cross the border for essential appointments...
... Border guards on the Schengen borders (don't know where they all came from, or where they will all go on Monday!)...
...Local Facebook groups who helped pool info for what was allowed and how to do it, when very little Information was forthcoming from the government (which is in Paris and to whom the 'border' is the périphérique)
My mum's lovely neighbour who got her shopping, and her village shop for providing everything else.

Sainsbury's delivery drivers
My local M&S
My local Iceland
The independent restaurants in my town who quickly swapped their businesses to make contact free deliveries or takeaways possible, keeping them going AND cheering us up on the weekend. Meanwhile lots of national chains could have tried similar but decided to furlough their staff. I'll remember that for the future.

MissEliza · 13/06/2020 00:06

Ooh and our local pharmacy Day Lewis) who were fabulous under pressure. They've always been great tbf.

Bool · 13/06/2020 00:24

Monty Don for bringing us Gardeners World with unmanned cameras

Breckenridged · 13/06/2020 00:48

All the above and Jump Start Jonny whose infectious enthusiasm and energy got the kids and I through one or two very low moments.

MorningNinja · 13/06/2020 00:54

All key workers having to leave the house - that initial feeling of not being able to fully protect your family is not a comfortable feeling.

The workers in my local supermarket - a lot must be 60+ but they've still been hard at it and smiling too.

A special shout out to lone parent key workers...what a tough feckin gig this has been at times. Flowers

Ponoka7 · 13/06/2020 03:31

I'll give a shout out to my DD's Staff. Those working in residential settings in the community. In their case, with people who have a complex diagnosis, including MH issues. But also those working with people who have LD's, physical disabilities etc, both in residential settings and as Home Care Workers. Those needing two-to-one and one-two-ones, still need care.

Likewise within Children's services. SWs and family support, have kept working for the most vulnerable.

Pharmaceutical services. My Son in Law has been pulled over numerous times, coming and going from work, even forced to do a drug/drink tests, even though he had a work uniform on. I've heard of people having their cars damaged because neighbours thought they were going out for the hell of it. To free up Labs, many went from making the usual drugs to taking over manufacturing paediatric and other essential medicines, so hours increased.

For many, takeaway places aren't of importance, but for others, who've struggled to get shopping, or have needed a treat, they have saved the day. All on minimum wage and zero contract hours.

Journalists and those connected to the News.

Many of the Doctors, Consultants, Virologists, disease specialists etc, whose natural place isn't in front of the camera, but they've done their best to keep the public informed, on various platforms. They've done well in dumbing it down for us.

Iceland has been brilliant. They've gone from priority shopping to priority slots for the vulnerable. My local shops have stayed well stocked.

My practice Nurse, who went back to work earlier than the practice manager wanted because people were suffering without their Vitamin B (me particularly) and other injections.

oldstripeyNEWname1 · 13/06/2020 03:57

Many of mine mentioned already. But additionally:

All the extra people who keep nhs ticking along. At my community healthcare trust, managing people from acute back home/care home or end of life, that means clinical staff (drs, nurses, hca, physios, ot etc). Housekeeping, cooks, care managers & Admin haven't had the credit they deserve. They've been on the wards, at risk., coping with new systems and everyone who interacts with patients makes a difference to their recovery.

Charity helplines, big & small. Samaritans & others have provided social contact and literal lifelines. Our usual late night drop in cafe for those with mental health challenges has carried on in zoom form. Lots of these things will have happened.

Small, and big heroes.

Going up

Supermarkets, delivery drivers, local farm shops who've started deliveries/click and collect, post(wo)men, and some teachers/schools can preen themselves over how they've handled this. Also warehouse workers. Joe Wicks for his daily PE. Virgin Wines and Coopers Coffee (Jersey) for keeping me supplied in wine and coffee respectively. Agree with IT staff at work, too.

Going down

There are some negatives with the supermarkets over the delivery slots. Otherwise Argos for not remaining open throughout, and even now they are making a massive meal of reopening, you'd think their business model was perfect for this crisis but apparently not. Any business that could have stayed open but decided to furlough its workers and let the taxpayer bail them out. Pharmacies for making a meal of taking bits of paper off people and handing bags of medicine back to them. Ikea for reopening when it's not allowed to until Monday. The powers that be in dentistry for leaving so many people in agony for so long (not the dentists themselves who have done what they can on the phone for people).

Pussycatinboots · 13/06/2020 09:04

My lovely Vet and his assistant for an emergency (socially distanced) visit with my poorly cat. 😺
The paramedics who took my DH to hospital at midnight on a Friday after he collapsed.🚑
The wonderful staff at our local Hospital for looking after him for 2 days.🏥🩺
The Pharmacists and GPs for helping us to "keep taking the tablets" Smile💊

just realised that I've put the Cat going to the Vet as higher priority than DH going to Hospital 🤦‍♀️😹

wowfudge · 13/06/2020 19:02

Martin Lewis - surprised more people haven't mentioned him. He has worked tirelessly to help people out, sought clarification from the government and lobbied for changes/measures for those people who have fallen through the cracks of government help provided.

DWP for dealing with a million benefit claims at the start of lockdown when they would usually have 50,000 and with their own staff working from home.

Joe Wickes and Jamie Oliver who responded so quickly.

Small local businesses who shifted their business models to continue to serve customers and provide delivery services, often without websites for taking orders.

My gym who within a week had all its members set up with an app for nutrition and training, devised a lockdown fitness programme and ensured everyone had a dedicated coach to keep in contact with and zoom workouts, video workouts and lots of support. I'm fitter than I've ever been!

Our local Hermes driver who has been absolutely excellent and reliable, unlike Yodel who have been terrible.

The local dairy and the milkman - I had to sign up with them when there were shortages in the shops as we couldn't buy milk.

There are lots more - friends who are locked down alone and have been sewing scrubs, masks and bags.

worstofbothworlds · 13/06/2020 19:38

Quite a lot of the DWP/HMRC staff are working in the offices too - they need the secure phone systems. So extra points for them.

And takeaway staff - one of my students is working in a takeaway and said "it's totally non essential" but I assured her she was saving every adult in her area from going crazy with cooking all the time.

A shout out to Sam West and his #pandemic poems

drspouse · 13/06/2020 20:19

Sarah Cooper: does the most amazing lipsync to Trump's words.

ZydecoLaydee · 13/06/2020 20:30

Please don’t forget the scientists trying to get us out of this! My husband has not had a day off since March, they are working so so hard trying to find a vaccine and treatments.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/06/2020 20:31

All the 'hidden' Keyworkers. The Military, for example, doing logistics support, the testing centres, helping to buildthe Nightingales, and lots more. Or the Council workers keeping things moving. Or NHS admin staff.

The Secretary at my DCs school, for all the collating to put out the emails for each year group with the work.

All the parents who have done their best.

blackpeonies · 13/06/2020 21:14

yes @zyd the scientists 👩‍🔬 👨‍🔬 working on novel covid treatments and vaccines. Please 🙏🏻

Yes, was going to mention these. I think it's absolutely amazing how they have built up so much knowledge about a new virus so quickly. Also to the volunteers in the trials.
feelingverylazytoday · 14/06/2020 01:20

And people who are donating their plasma to help others recover.

blackpeonies · 14/06/2020 06:24
  • our gps who did tele-consultations throughout - who knew how practical this is, as good or maybe better than getting to clinic - and orthodontist’s weekly scans on app and sending elastics
Scottishgirl85 · 14/06/2020 08:17

Children, the only innocent party and who have suffered the most.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 14/06/2020 09:25

Children are the only innocent party? Is this virus an evil conspiracy by the entire adult population to suppress them? I’m afraid I missed that memo.

margaritasbythesea · 14/06/2020 09:37

Barry Rees, ex biology teacher currently working for Ceredigion County Council. He suggested putting in a homemade track and trace system even before lockdown began in Ceredigion. Tracing contacts begins even before a confirmed diagnosis.

We've had the lowest rates in the country despite the outbreak starting off in an identical fashion to surrounding counties. Top chap. Sorry for big link.

I'd like to second Martin Lewis. Works like a Trojan & knows his stuff, plus he put pressure on Gov when it mattered. He's a lockdown hero.
