How the hell are parents meant to work?

With this latest blow from schools and yet further delays, I predict employers will cease to be “ fair” and they will run out of the patience BJ vaguely muttered about hoping they’d have. So what are the options?

  1. Resign from jobs? This could have massive impact on income, likely to affect women and the future of women’s’ rights and progress in the workplace, creation of mental health issues and socio economic problems
  2. Will some parents be pushed in to feeling the have no choice but to leave kids home alone? Esp those who are borderline age group eg 8-12. Not ideal at all. Clearly this will impact on MH, safety, parental work performance.
  3. Leave kids with grandparents who are likely to be over 70 in many cases, shielding or vulnerable. Risks of passing the virus on would lead to guilt , worry on both sides.
  4. Wait for everything to fuck up work wise, scrabble for child care here there and everywhere, lose employers good will due to time off needed and eventually get dismissed for poor attendance, breach of conduct and or poor performance

This is a disgrace. An absolute disgrace

@StrawberryBlondeStar I had the initial conversation at the end of may so employer could have furloughed me technically but was at manager’s discretion,.. and manager didn’t see the need ... what can you do really? Employers should be flexible and sympathetic they say, reality is far from it.

Ok the rover reference killed me 😁

@TheMurk it wasn’t a criticism of you. Just if you aren’t on it by now there was not much you could do; however more guidance had come our suggesting those coming off Mat leave can be put on the scheme. Ultimately, yes it is still up to your employer, but is something you could push for. What’s happening with your post at the moment? Is it being covered by someone?

No the person has been redeployed within the business.

The vagueness of everything does not help, it makes me seem difficult when I can’t commit the truth is I am keen to go back to work but it’s bit possible with a baby in the house.

How selfish you all are. I am sick of your whining. Maybe your work places could open a room for childcare and you could take it in turns. Be creative, find solutions, they are YOUR children, YOUR responsibility. Teachers are at risk every day as are their families, many in high housing cost areas live with parents as my daughter does. He Dad is mid 60s with asthma and every day she goes to work he is put at more risk. Teachers have all worked very hard to educate your bloody kids and the virus is not their fault. My DC is a secondary school teacher, so imagine how many kids they see every day & multiply that by siblings at other schools, they have no way to isolate. Also there is a lot more to life than the 3 rs. This also means that there is no way I can see my own parents. There are no words for how sick I am of moaning parents. One on the radio just complained her DD spent too much time in her room, so whose fault is that?? Hers, occupy your own D !! Don't bother to have a go at this as I don't care what you think or say, you are still way out of order plus I won't check anyway.
