Has anyone had the antibody test

I have been offered the antibody test through work and I am having it tomorrow. I've never had any symptoms but will the test anyway. Has anyone had the test and had antibodies even though had no symptoms

I am extremely clinically vulnerable and believe that DH and I had COVID in March. My consultant advised that I should have an antibody test, but my GP says they are not reliable and it is too late anyway, so I'm stuck.

If I knew for sure that I had had it, I could make decisions about my life from a position of knowledge, but it seems not to be, same as there was no support or advice when I actually had symptoms.

Egghead68 · 13/06/2020 11:19

@NaToth I’m in the same position as you. You can have a private antibody test if you like. However, as we don’t know what the results mean in terms of immunity it won’t really help in making decisions about your life.

PanamaPattie · 13/06/2020 11:23

Yes - had one on Sunday (NHS) -came back negative. I was convinced I had the virus in March but obviously not.

Bettysprocker · 13/06/2020 11:30

My sister works in a London hospital. She was really ill in March but had three negative CV tests. Her antibody test came back positive about a week ago, which pushed her to get a chest xray due to continued breathlessness. That came back that she has blunting of both lungs. Her doctor was surprised she wasn't hospitalised when she was at her worst.
What was more surprising is the amount of staff who work around her that had little (a headache for a couple of days) or no symptoms that also received positive antibody results.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 13/06/2020 11:35

3 people on my FB who work for the NHS have had it and came back that they had antibodies. 2 of them had no symptoms, 1 had what she thought was a mild cold.

SamAndSmith · 13/06/2020 11:37

The nhs trust I work for are rolling it out now for all staff. Slowly.
I know a few colleagues have had it and tested positive and never had and symptoms. Also know a few who had symptoms, very poorly, tested negative for covid but the antibody test has come back positive.

Cyclewidow46 · 13/06/2020 12:00

I'm NHS and had my test on Tuesday and got a negative result yesterday. Not a surprise as had no symptoms. Colleagues who have had positive Covid tests were positive for antibodies (as expected) but we also had someone positive for antibodies who had had no symptoms previously.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 13/06/2020 12:06

What happens if you get a negative test now, will you be allowed another antibody test in a couple of months time if you want one?

emmy4 · 16/06/2020 18:01

My test came back today, it was negative. (NHS worker).

JillyWillyPops · 22/06/2020 17:07

I was chosen to participate in the university of London antibody research study.

Carried out the test at home today and it showed positive for antibodies.

It was a simple and instant test, finger prick with a drop of blood into what looked like a pregnancy test. The results came up almost instantly.

ILoveGroot · 22/06/2020 18:00

I work for NHS, had antibody test and came back positive. I lost all sense of taste and smell for about two weeks at the end of March, and smell still not back to normal. No other symptoms apart from extreme fatigue, which I put down to stress! my DS and DH had no symptoms.

WanderingMilly · 22/06/2020 18:15

I had the antibody test, it was really good and gave me the answers I wanted.
I had the virus at the start of lockdown and I was very ill with it; I couldn't get a COVID test as it was too early on and they were only doing key workers at that pint, I tried twice.

I felt I needed to know so I paid for a private test in May, I went through a really good company who helped me through everything (proper blood test, not a spot test like Superdrug were doing) and it was analysed by the government approved Abbott labs.

Found I was positive, it was a relief as I was so sure I'd had the virus. I also got a certificate which I sent to my workplace (they asked for it) even though I am still furloughed. The testing company make sure you are aware that antibodies don't necessarily confer immunity (not enough is known yet) and even if they do, no-one is certain how long any immunity would last, so they emphasise you must follow all the guidelines just like everyone else. I thought that was responsible of them.

The approved tests are quite accurate but I understand that not everyone makes antibodies, especially if you've had a milder form of the virus you might not have had it badly enough to make enough antibodies to be detected.

hopefulhalf · 22/06/2020 19:24

Yes got negative results today. I was unwell for about 12 hours in March with no loss of smell so wasn't surprised it was negative.

flack · 22/06/2020 19:32

It didn't hurt... that's my only useful contribution. I hate those needle tests to test iron levels or whatever, but this wasn't too bad at all. Although my thumb is still a little sore. But my big wimpness was misplaced.

I got the test due to random population sampling. omg, the number of comments from jealous people who obviously would like the test themselves!. I guess they don't mind needles in fingers as much as I do. Presumably 95% of people with a history of relevant symptoms will come back negative.

Woodandsky · 22/06/2020 19:35

Which test is the NHS using? I would love to get my DH tested as he I think had it back in March and still isn't 100% but I don't want to waste money on an unreliable test

simonthedog · 22/06/2020 19:36

I thought I had had it, but antibody test was negative.

EllenOlenska · 22/06/2020 19:52

Hi, has mine and got negative result today which I expected but was curious as I was very very ill the last few weeks of December/early January eith very similar symptoms to C19.

We now have 100% uptake in my department and not one of us has come back positive despite half of us being off work with varying degrees of ill health displaying covid like symptoms since March (one having been very ill for 3-4 weeks).

botheritagain · 23/06/2020 01:59

I have had the Abbott test which I paid for.

Last week I had the Roche test on the NHS (extremely vulnerable and symptomatic early March).

Both negative Sad

KnobChops · 23/06/2020 04:59

NHS antibody test positive. Very mild symptoms in March. Had worse colds.

Mintjulia · 23/06/2020 05:23

Yes. And I had no antibodies, which was a disappointment. Sore finger for nothing. Grin

Sleepyblueocean · 23/06/2020 06:01

Yes someone my sister works with had positive antibody test (NHS) but didn't know that she had had the virus. My sister was also positive but knew she had had it.

AlandAnna · 23/06/2020 06:07

NHS Negative test here. Husband was positive - he had a worse illness than mine. I had v mild, but must have fought it off somehow, even if antibodies no longer detected.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 23/06/2020 06:08

A relative ill in late March and works for the NHS, 2 negative virus tests but tested positive for antibodies.

PuppyMonkey · 23/06/2020 06:18

DP got randomly selected for the NHS test and took it yesterday - he has the antibodies! Shock

He was ill with flu like symptoms in March, but he had none of the classic things like the dry cough, loss of taste etc. He was mostly very sneezy, but also very fatigued - right as rain after a week. He had a temp of 37.8 for one day, but it went down really quickly so I wouldn’t say he had a particularly bad fever.

Nobody else in the house has had any symptoms at all, so lord knows if we’ve had it and just not realised/ not been affected at all. Fortunately I was super paranoid at the time so we all self isolated when he was ill.

violetscone · 23/06/2020 08:19

I wish I could get one. I commuted to London until mid March so am likely to have had it.
