Do other countries have covidiots?

Are we the only country that is seeing the shameless flouting of lockdown? I seem to hear stories and see more and more photos of people either bending or breaking the rules. Today we went for a picnic and four separate groups were breaching guidelines to various degrees. How is it in other countries? I've googled but can't seem to find much out, are we really setting ourselves up to fail?

The Austrian president was caught breaking the rules last weekend...

Musicforsmorks · 31/05/2020 16:19

I’m more surprised by how many people think it is a conspiracy here. Thought that was a US particularity 😁

I don’t know them personally but have heard a lot of talk from friends about someone they know who thinks it’s all a joke or a 5g thing.
And these are regular people, parents, educated, etc.

It’s interesting!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 31/05/2020 16:21

Of course they do. The papers reported on the number of fines issued in Italy when that went into lockdown.

Musicforsmorks · 31/05/2020 16:22

There’s a weird vibe about it all, I think the weather, combined with so many off work has driven the crazy factor up a lot.

I keep wondering who are all these people stuck in congested villages/beauty spots or heading to beach? Are the really that many people will not working?

Unlike regular tourists they seem to have gone a bit mad, littering, drinking, assaulting police, etc. Who the fuck are they?

Musicforsmorks · 31/05/2020 16:23

people still not working

EasterIssland · 31/05/2020 16:24

Someone from the Belgium royal family caught corona in a party in Spain with more people than they’re allowed.
My Spanish friends keep saying how people aren’t following the rules

Cornettoninja · 31/05/2020 16:26

You didn’t google very hard to be honest, there are plenty of accounts out there out there of breathtaking nonchalance about this virus. One account from India was of a man who travelled internationally started to experience symptoms but decided to go to a religious festival and started an outbreak of around 40 people.

Also I really hate this daily mailesq bastardisation of words to pour scorn on people. Covidiots - how is that even pronounced? It hardly trips off the to tongue does it? At least remoaners and brexiters were catchy.

Pacmanitee · 31/05/2020 16:28

Yes of course there are. Most people here that people berate for breaking the rules aren't doing so anyway.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/05/2020 16:30

Yes!

With very few exceptions.

Those exceptions map very strongly with those countries that had high population mask usage and previous experience of similar endemics.

But must countries with social mores that more closely resemble the UK also have their fair share of covidiots.

MrsTerryPratchett · 31/05/2020 16:31

People being idiots is built into the rules. You need a few people to get it actually. And if it's dumb teenagers who will get a mild sniffle, that's great. I've seen some great stuff from countries that like science and assume their citizens aren't morons. Flattening isn't flatlining.

The problem in the UK and US is that no one trusts the people in charge so even sensible people are confused and make up their own risk assessments. That's more worrying.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 31/05/2020 16:32

Crikey @Cornettoninja

It's a bog standard portmanteau word!

Like Goviot...

Siepie · 31/05/2020 16:32

A Belgian prince got covid at a Spanish party.

Of course idiots and rulebreakers exist everywhere, whether during covid or at other times!

CornishYarg · 31/05/2020 16:34

Have just looked this up as I remember reading about it at the time.

Are the really that many people still not working?

None of our immediate neighbours are going to work. We have a teacher, a social worker and a GP practice manager. All claim to be "working from home" and aren't going to work. Yet, the teacher spends a few hours every day doing his garden, DIY, etc. The GP practice manager is baby-sitting her granddaughter who gets dropped off by the mother every day. The social worker is forever going out 2 or 3 times a day and coming back with a single shopping bag. They're incredibly hypoctrical. This weekend has been a joke - it's been party central - all 3 of them have had multiple friends/relatives around, up to 9 at a time - it's like a revolving door with people coming and going. And the teacher still has the nerve to say he's not going back to school as it's too dangerous due to lack of social distancing. Like I say, hypocrites. Amazing what being paid a full wage does for you - it's the green light to take the piss and dream up excuses not to actually do any work.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/05/2020 16:38

Of course they do. I've read about parties in Italy and Spain.

AdoptedBumpkin · 31/05/2020 16:38

Most American states have seen protests.

The80sweregreat · 31/05/2020 16:39

I was thinking about numbers of people out and about but I guess the ones working from home are going out on the weekends more and if you think of the amount of big stores and restaurants . Cinemas , pubs there are and just how many people they employ , so they are all about too. It all adds up really : some high streets have more places shut than open. Plus students are home too.
Plus we do have an aging population and many of the boomers are not shielding either
they are all up the garden centre around here! It all adds up

miafeta · 31/05/2020 16:40

In my home country running away from the hospital seems to be the thing
Police are good at catching them quickly though

highmarkingsnowbile · 31/05/2020 16:41

There's a huge protest on in London today with thousands packed in together.

AlpineSnow · 31/05/2020 16:41

Of course. Paris were banned from going out for exercise until 7pm because of people not sticking to it

AuntieStella · 31/05/2020 16:41

Lots of newly coined words and phrases from the pandemic, or new meanings to established ones. Covidiot may have been a US coining (possibly because that's a place where there are so very, very many - which also answers OP's original question)

I think the biggest impact one in UK is change of meaning of 'zoom'

Neologisms are one of the great joys of the language!

pfrench · 31/05/2020 16:43

You've got no idea what hours people are working.

nether · 31/05/2020 16:43

many of the boomers are not shielding either

Why would they? The shield list is defined by medical condition. There are no age categories on it

thefuriousfuggler · 31/05/2020 16:48

Someone vaguely local to us here in France got stopped making a non-essential journey - they were going to meet up with friends for a kebab.

He was already on bail for other offences.

Sentenced to18 months in prison.
