Social distancing: A practical guide to how to socialise now https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52848793

Just read this and thought worth sharing for people who can have people round.

Big Thanksfor those fellow shielders

Wouldn't the 45 min hand washing be counter productive, as everyone would have to traipse through the house to do it...

Redolent · 02/06/2020 00:23

What a tool. Why is he allowed to sit six feet away from his fellow presenter without wearing a mask, but the rest of us have to wear one while walking quickly through the house to get to the garden??

maggienolia · 02/06/2020 06:19

I hope that taxi firm offering lifts home isn't our local one. A group of their drivers were chatting in the local Tesco car park yesterday. And there was no social distancing in sight.
Most of them were older, overweight men. (No coleslaw in sight though)

Oblomov20 · 02/06/2020 07:30

This really pissed me off. It was so OTT and overly dramatic.
Washing your hands every 45 minutes.
Isn't this just scaremongering? It's not helpful is it?

Oblomov20 · 02/06/2020 07:35

Dr Xand van Tulleken: "We have to have quite a high level of paranoia"

How is encouraging paranoia, helpful?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/06/2020 07:43

So glad to see this thread and to find that I wasn't the only one who thought that that article was shit.

AppleKatie · 02/06/2020 07:53

The article is ridiculous - the do not have fun mantra is bizarre.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 02/06/2020 07:54

It’s a really disappointing article - reads like daily mail fodder tbh.

Are people really taking their own cutlery and crockery to their relatives? What about mugs and glasses?

IcedPurple · 02/06/2020 08:38

Sadly I don't think that many people will follow the advice once they get together in a garden

You think it's 'sad' that people might not set the alarm to wash their hands every 45 minutes, mark out 2 metre distances with bamboo sticks and tell fat men over 50 to bring their own coleslaw?

The sad thing would be adhering to such paranoid 'advice'.

AppleKatie · 02/06/2020 08:42

At the moment I’m taking my own chair, my own wine and my own glass. I think it’ll be awhile before it’s actually a good idea to have a bbq but i will wait til it’s safe to have a proper one rather than comply with that miserable charade that the bbc are writing about.

ITonyah · 02/06/2020 08:44

I'm going to a friend's tonight for drinks. Hand sanitiser before after and during. 2m in the garden.

Weather's going to change so if you are thinking of visiting friends in their garden do it now!

Drivingdownthe101 · 02/06/2020 08:47

I’ve actually complained to the BBC about this excuse for an ‘article’, and I never usually complain about anything!

PurpleDaisies · 02/06/2020 08:56

If you look at what the government guidelines say, that’s basically what’s being encouraged...

1.9 Can I share food and drink, including having a picnic or a barbeque [sic] in an outdoor space?
Yes but stay alert. You should not pass each other food or drink unless you live together. You should not use plates or utensils that someone from another house has touched - either bring your own or ensure you have thoroughly cleaned them before using. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly for at least 20 seconds and use disposable towels if possible.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 02/06/2020 09:48

How is the food going to get off the bbq if you can’t pass it to each other?

I really hope the scientists/government have factored into their risk assessments that people are probs going to pass drinks/share utensils and condiments.

Crikey, that reads rather like a spoof - but it's official !

ITonyah · 02/06/2020 10:04

I take my own wine glass!

PurpleDaisies · 02/06/2020 10:06

One person barbecuing. Put food on plate on table. People use a one way system to take food from table using their own cutlery.

PurpleDaisies · 02/06/2020 10:07

This is why idiot Boris shouldn’t have said people can have barbecues without clear guidelines about how to do it safely.

ScarfLadysBag · 02/06/2020 10:11

Was this article written by some of the MN dementors?

ScarfLadysBag · 02/06/2020 10:13

Can't wait to have pals round to spin around with brooms. Think it's easier if I just stop being friends with anyone who is male and overweight though.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/06/2020 10:17

"Was this article written by some of the MN dementors?"

Was the above government advice written by them ?
Sounds about as mad ! Grin

ineedaholidaynow · 02/06/2020 10:19

That’s why the medical official wasn’t too keen on the idea of BBQs when Boris mentioned them at the press briefing.

And for the PPs laughing at the idea of more people ending up in A&E after getting up from the sofa too quickly, I ended up in A&E after exactly that scenario. I had been sitting on the sofa for some time with my feet curled up, and I jumped up quickly to see something outside and one foot went over and there was an ominous crack. My ankle and foot swelled up so ended up in A&E having x-rays. No broken bones but torn ligaments, very painful for weeks.

Lynda07 · 02/06/2020 10:23

Hee hee. I don't think I'll bother.

JudyGemstone · 02/06/2020 10:26

I read this last night and couldn't believe it wasn't satire - it reads like a daily mash piece.

Bonkers! It’s going to be like wacky races when the bangers are ready
