Does anyone know? Presumably the media know she cant or it would have been asked why he needed to drive her to the hospital with their son when he had covid and had blurry eyes? Also she could have driven them back to London and not needed a trip to Barnard Castle to test his eyes?

I am genuinely on the fence over this. Is he an outright liar and was just off for a jolly or does he just have appallingly bad judgement/lack basic common sense decision making skills? Or, is he secretly working for the Russians and is trying to dismantle the govt from the inside (given that we know that he likes dismantling things)? I just cannot decide.

PerspicaciaTick · 25/05/2020 20:04

Two drivers in a car? Why not share the driving? It isn't hard driving from Durham to London, you can't get lost, it is one road all the way. It might tiring and you might want to pace yourselves, but there is no need for someone with blurry eyes to do the whole thing themselves.

sleepyhead · 25/05/2020 20:12

Have they explained why they had to come back so urgently that they risked their own and others lives by driving when not 100% sure of their ability to do so safely?

Why not stay in Durham and follow the guidance?

itsgettingweird · 25/05/2020 20:14

So Mary can drive.

I assume one of the other 5 adults on the estate could drive (for the hospital trip)

He went up for their help. But didn't use it.

mumwon · 25/05/2020 20:19

I thought she was being (as in vomiting) too - driving on that road whilst feeling unwell for that journey - hmm - & surely they must have stopped for either a loo stop or petrol - out of interest does anybody know if that kind of car could do that journey on one tank?
As for the wood on my father's estate - unless the other person was trespassing - I assume there is public access footpath through the wood (somebody check!! anybody got access to maps of the area???) & as for that Barnard Castle story - I am sorry but that is definitely one of the most made up stories I have ever heard - especially when they previously insisted he had stayed in the house & not gone out …
What would have happened if the car broke down on route - or the dc had needed to go to the loo (even if they didn't - & I have travelled that route with dc many times so excuse my cynicism - you cant assume that they wouldn't need to stop)

sexbearhouse · 25/05/2020 20:22

Yes she can definitely drive.

It's such a load of bollocks you would have to be as thick as shit to believe it.

TerrapinStation · 25/05/2020 20:24

It's the A1 the whole way, it's not like you could get lost. Why would anyone who can drive not be able to drive down an empty road?

I hope they didnt go on the A1, if time was of the essence why wouldn't they have used the much more direct M1?

Motorways have been deserted for the most part, there couldn't be easier roads to drive on.

Inoneminute · 25/05/2020 20:28

Because it was his duty to get back to work and fight the virus sleepy head.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/05/2020 20:30

A couple of years I got bacterial tonsillitis 150 miles from home, dh Drive me home and it was horrendous. I just wanted to be in my bed.

I wouldn’t have chosen to do that journey but go away from home with a small child to look after too so why didn’t she stand up to him and say no. You usually want to be at home when your ill.

Weebitawks · 25/05/2020 20:38

Also, they were on his father's massive fucking estate/farm. Couldn't he have "tested his eyesight" by driving around on his private land? Instead of endangering not only his family, but other road users by driving to a beauty spot on his wife's birthday

VenusTiger · 25/05/2020 20:49

He said his eyes were "weird" not that he couldn't see - have any of you ever suffered from a migraine and/or motion sickness in the car?

VenusTiger · 25/05/2020 20:52

@Fluffycloudland77 I understand where you're coming from yes - but DC mentioned the constant baying mob outside his house back then.

Japanese987 · 25/05/2020 20:57

How can anyone say it is now proven they didn't come into contact with anyone during their stay? They used an ambulance and spent a night in hospital which would be the worst place to spread it (other than perhaps a care home). Would be interesting if the staff all had full ppe as presumably not in a covid ward. This could certainly have caused spread. Everyone was told to stay home and avoid moving to the country so hospitals had best chance of capacity for local population. Well done the NHS for their confidentiality in not reporting this. However Cummings should have been publicly thanking the NHS for their efforts then and today.

Don't drive when your eyes are weird up there with don't drive when you've been drinking all day, even applying 'instinct', that's the case.

Haplap · 25/05/2020 21:00

Super spreader's cummings and goings will leave a trail of infection in their wake.

Japanese987 · 25/05/2020 21:09

Yes suffered plenty of migraines. I certainly wouldn't be going to test my eyes by driving - ever!

OP posts:
dementedma · 25/05/2020 21:13

Who the fuck cares?

ShanghaiDiva · 25/05/2020 21:17

The whole testing my eyesight on a journey to BC is utter drivel.
A 30 minute drive is hardly comparable to a 5 hour journey and if he felt his eyesight had been affected why drive anywhere, wait until you are better. Presumably he could have worked from ‘home’ (aka farm cottage) just like everyone else was encouraged to do.

happystone · 25/05/2020 21:20

They new that if police stoped wife they would be in the shit but if you get stoped and are Borris. Mate you get away with it.

Haplap · 25/05/2020 21:21

The longer he remains in post, the bigger the death toll in two weeks time. That is the horrendous reality of this.

JudyCoolibar · 25/05/2020 21:21

Why on earth did he collect them from hospital rather than getting his sister or her kids to do so?

JudyCoolibar · 25/05/2020 21:22

He said his eyes were "weird" not that he couldn't see - have any of you ever suffered from a migraine and/or motion sickness in the car?

When I have either, I definitely don't drive. Not only would I not trust my vision, I would be worried that I might need to throw up at any moment.

JudyCoolibar · 25/05/2020 21:24

but DC mentioned the constant baying mob outside his house back then.

I wonder what his neighbours and the local police have to say about it? Given the strict rules in place then about only going out to take exercise, I find it incredibly believe that there was a mob standing around the road routinely without the police doing anything about it.

Japanese987 · 25/05/2020 21:44

We should all care. Trust is vital if we are to all follow such extreme instructions as required in a pandemic. If he had said he had an awful 2 weeks, all the family feeling ill and went out for a drive for a birthday treat but kept 2m distance at all times people would be annoyed, maybe angry but there wouldn't be this total lack of trust especially if he had apologized for it.

OP posts:
JanewaysBun · 25/05/2020 23:19

The baying mob thing is BS. I live near a politician who used to be very important. There were occasionally baying mobs and the police would always come and supervise (they couldn't make them leave apparently so the mob got moved slightly further down the road Hmm away from the house). He could also have asked for a security guard!
